A report is a written document with a set layout which is often used to analyse a situation or date based on information (that has been researched or found)

Recommendations are often given based on the analysis of the findings.

Purpose: The main function of a report is to Aid Decision Making. They can be Formal or Informal. They can be Routine (e.g Sales report) They can be Special Occasional (e.g Special projects and market research about lunching new products)

Advantages: They are often written to save managerial time and therefore money. They are good source of reference and provide a record. They enable access to information in an easy to understand format. They make suggestions or recommendations based on Knowledge and research.

Before writing a report, you need to consider whether it is being used to: Inform Recommend Instruct

Need to consider AUDIENCE: Expectations Language Understanding

Present your information in an ORGANISED LOGICAL way to make it clear.

NOTE: ALL info in Reports needs to be communicated IMPARTIALLY, so user can make OWN JUDGMENTS.

If Bias is detected it can undermine the credibility of the report.
Recommendations reflect your opinions.

1. INFORMAL REPORT INTRODUCTION outlines purpose/how you researched your information.



2. SHORT FORMAL REPORT will contain the following headings: TITLE (include company name and basic outline of report)

TERMS OF REFERENCE – outline purpose of report and often states who requested the report.

PROCEDURE – HOW information was required. Usually by interviewing or observation or statistical data. If possible state whether this is primary or secondary data.

RECOMMENDATIONS – Advice to person reading report.




To report the unrest amongst factory workers and make recommendations, as requested by Mr. K Kong, Works Manager, on November 24, 2006.

1. The three supervisors were interviewed.
2. A meeting was held with all factory workers to hear grievances.
3. 6 workers, selected at random, were interviewed personally.

1 SUPERVISOR’S INTERVIEW 1.1 The company’s rates of pay compare favourably with those paid to apprentices at other companies in this area. Grievances might stop if our staff are made aware of this.

1.2 Supervisors reported that many staff was generally un-cooperative and not working to their usual standards.

CONCLUSIONS 1 Safety regulations were being ignored by some members of staff. Protective guards had been removed from many machines. 2 A table showing rates of pay at this company and at other companies is attached. 3 Rules laid down in the company handbook were being contravened, with some workers leaving machines dirty after use. 4 A widespread unrest was noted in view of what is considered to be low rates of pay. 5 Removal of safety guards from machines is an offence against the Factories Act. 6 Supervisors are not enforcing compliance with rules laid down in the company handbook.

RECOMMENDATION 1 The human resource manager should hold a meeting of all workers and explain the findings of this report. 2 Supervisors should be reminded of the importance of ensuring that all staff complies with the company’s rules and safety regulations. 3 A training scheme should be complied that will ensure balanced experience in all areas of the factory as well as adequate supervision.

Gly Griffs Marketing Company

Report on Gly Griffs Recruitment Fair

The purpose of this report is to see how the recruitment fair went and to see whether there are anything they can improve in the future. This recruitment took place on 27th January 2012 at the Gly Griffs’ headquarters. This report was requested by Glen Canterbum, Personal Manager.

Seven thousand people attended.

30% was graduates, 50% come along out of curiousity and 20% was employed and wanted to learn about their competitors.

Graduates was high calibers and Gly Griffs collected many CV’s for the positions.

Although there are many people attended but, mostly those who attended only attend out of curiosity. The Recruitment fair was very helpful for those who just graduated and Gly Griffs should always make this recruitment fair.

The purpose of this report is to report about a local Business Studies student, Ingrid Knutsen’s work, progress , attitude and relationship with other members of staff. This report is made because Ingrid Knutsen might apply for a job with the company in the future. This report was requested by Mr Martin Graham, The Human Resource Manager.

1 Spoke to the supervisors of each departments, on 29 January.





The purpose of this report is to outline the key issues and how to improve the company’s situation. This report was requested by Martin Schofield, Production manager.

Staff interviews was conducted.

1 The company is a family run business.

2 Clarence Smith runs the company in a very old fashion way but, know s what is going on in the company.

3 Very workaholic boss.

4 Nothing has changed for the past 42years.



The purpose of this report is for a marketing research survey on dining habits for the local magazine, Food & Drink. This report was requested by Hazwan Bakar, the Marketing Director of Roberts.

1 Interviews was held for 1750people in major cities in the north of England, on 4th December.

1 60% shows that they often eat out.
2 People usually eats out everyday.
3 40% shows that the reason they eats out because it fits in with pay day.
4 Most of the people dines at Chez Gerard
5 the reason for eating at the restaurant from habit and miscellaneous.
6 47% shows that they don’t eat at other restaurants because the prices are too high.
7 In all of the advertisement, 37% likes the advertisement from Mama Mia.
