BUSINESS COMMUNICATION (BUS 103)
Individual Assignment Semester 2, 2013

NAME: AHMED WAHEED
STUDENT ID: 000033505
COURSE: DIPLOMA IN BUSINESS
1) Describe any situation in which you were involved where the communication went wrong. Analyze the communication process in that situation, using the terms sender, receiver and other elements. Which element (s) of the communication process disrupted the situation? What lessons did you learn?
Answer: Three years back I worked as a journalist at Television Maldives and in this situation I was the receiver of the communication process. As I worked as journalist information’s on allocating tasks and event schedules were received by our senior editors.
Saturday is normally my off day. After my off day when I came back to office on Sunday, the secretary sends me a notice saying that I have to meet news room head after the editorial meeting. So I did. When I meet him he told me that I didn’t attend to cover an event which was on Saturday. I told him that it was my off day, and no one informed me about it. If there is any important event to cover before also I have worked on my off days. Before I was informed one day prior about the event I have to cover on my off day. But the last day I didn’t receive the information.
I went back to news room and checked the notice board, the event schedule and assigned journalist to cover the event list was updated on Saturday. And I was assigned to cover the event on that day. I complained about this to senior editor who assigned the tasks. She told that she updated it on the notice board, and it’s my responsibility to check it. I told her that she could at least call my mobile and inform me about that. Since that was a non working day for me.
In this situation the senior editor was the sender I was the receiver of the communication process, but because of choosing an inappropriate way to send the message it disrupted.
The elements which disrupted the communication are the channel sender chosen did not guarantee whether the receiver (me) is receiving it or not. And also she gave the information on inappropriate timing which was an off day for me. She could have given the information in advance on Friday before I left my duty.
From this incident I have learned that in different situation some of the communication channels may not work. So we have to choose the right channel before we give the information. So the receiver will receive it on time. By placing the information on notice board at the same time she could have informed me verbally through a phone which would me much effective. And also she could have chosen a working day to give the information.

Currently I am an offsite employee with BlueCross BlueShield as a Claims Associate I. I process claims for military families and my role of communication is by e-mail messages and letters. Responding to my manager, coworkers, and customers help me manage my daily work activities that allows me to provide excellent customer service. Successful business communication is an important element in today’s business. When there is a lack of communication there is little consistency among employees and management, which will not work well. Communication starts within the workplace with an environment of honesty, support, and teamwork. Before becoming an offsite employee as a claims processor I worked onsite for three years in which I had to call providers and customers for information to process claims. I had to listen when I first started this job to ensure that I would know how to process claims efficiently. We are grouped in a team called a POD....

My section supplies a service to another section in the form of recordable media. My section is responsible for the insertion of the media into devices to be analyzed later. To accomplish this task my section must know when it is needed to be installed, removed, and transported to be analyzed. To find this information we must communicate with the section that does the scheduling. In turn the scheduler must communicate with the section that operates the equipment that my section inserts the media in to. After the installation and use by the operator, my section then retrieves the media and transports it to the analyzers. If there is a broken link in the chain of events, we may fail to insert the media or worse, we may never retrieve the media which may result in a security violation. My daily work activities are based on when the media is required and how long it is required. Once that information is known we can plan everything else around this....

The Audience-centered approach is significant in business communication because it emphasizes understanding, respecting and meeting the need of your our audience members. It is an inclusion approach that caters to all. This new model also emphasizes the individuality of the stakeholder and thus the uniqueness of the corporate image that he or she holds.
