Assume you are appointed as a sub-group of bigger research team who is involved in socio-economic study on Colombo City Region Food system. The team leader explains the core objectives and aims of the study to all groups and following information is the summary of the explanation.

The problem and scope
Food is one of the basic biological requirement of humans where every living being requires sufficient nutrients to be healthy and survive in the world. However, food is not readily available for everyone at same level and there are significant disparities in food security of different segments of the society due to various reasons mainly stem from availability, affordability and quality of food. Availability of food is related to food production and distribution, affordability of food relate to pricing and income level of the consumers, and quality of food is relate to nutrients, and food safety measures in food processing.

In general Colombo Municipality considered as the best neighborhood in the country where there is access to high standard of living. However, according to preliminary study conducted on food system in the Colombo city region, there are serious food security issues in Colombo municipality. There are large number of residential and floating population in Colombo city region with diverse food patterns due to their socio-economic diversities. However, not all of their food requirements are sufficiently met. There are large number of people who live under minimum requirement of food intake in Colombo.

However, there is lack of standard information base available to get clear understanding of how food system works, identify the issues related to availability, affordability and quality of food and determine the trend patterns and compare standards with other regions.
The Aim of the study
In order to identify the problems, issues and possible solutions to achieve food for all in Colombo city region, a research team have identified five key thematic areas covering availability, affordability and quality of food,
Thematic area of food loss and waste: Colombo city is small area but having highest population density of Sri Lanka. Therefore 95% of the food requirement of the city are satisfied by the other regions and imported products. Since there is high population and behave as the commercial hub of the country, highest percentage of all the food items produced or imported to Sri Lanka come to Colombo city. Since they are coming from faraway places there is serious food loss throughout the channel. Further at household, institutional and commercial level there is serious foo waste in Colombo city.
The research team has identified the key indicators and potential sources to assess the food loss and food waste in Colombo food system. Losses Waste Economic values/Reuse
