Case Study Collection Assignment
Case studies may be from a variety of types of organizations (financial, advertising, manufacturing, online, service, acquisition, retention), or you may focus more specifically on an area of special interest or relevance to you. Focusing on an area is highly encouraged. Focusing on one area usually produces a higher quality article. The majority of studies should be recent (post 2008) and should contain enough detail to allow evaluation of the manner in which the use of analytics enabled the organizations to reach their goals. Eric Seigal's book as well as Davenport and Harris book are good sources for this assignment. You can also use your own research to select case studies with a common theme that may span outside of these two books. However, utilize peer-reviewed cases (for example, cases from a journal like INFORMS Transactions on Education) instead of self-published marketing cases.
A minimum of 5 Cases should be discussed. Well established areas should include more than 5 articles.

A summation of the case studies will display your understanding of the relationship between the theories presented in the readings and the real-life examples presented in the case studies. Questions to be addressed in the summation paper include (but are not limited to):
- What was the ultimate value of the analytics for the organizations?
- How was the appropriate analytic approach selected?
- How was data collected, and how were data quality issues handled?
- What type of analytic competitors were the organizations before, and after, their use of analytics?
- Where did the organizations make improvements? The strategic level? Functional? Globally?
Other learning from the case studies should be included in the summation. The summation should begin with an executive summary.

This essay will explain the expenses and revenue of my salon. I will show how this business will prove to be successful and promising to anyone who reads. Introduction I’ve always dreamed of starting a business. As a former cosmetologist, I’ve always had a passion for hair and beauty. I’ve also had an online store selling jewelry for a few years. So, I know my way around a salon and I know how to market a business. Now that I’m a student of business, I think that I’m capable of starting a hair salon. This choice of business was my first choice because I feel comfortable in my efforts of having a salon. I am familiar with the operations of a salon, and with maintaining the required inventory. That being said, the public will always find a need for a salon, and the trade of cosmetology will be a useful one for years to come. I think that opening a salon is a very smart business move. Revenue and Profits My projected sales for year #1 are $50,000 at the minimum. My expenses will total around $10,000. The expenses will include products for salon services, insurance on the building, and equipment for the salon. Around 10% of my sales revenue will be consumed by expenses. The remaining 90% will be profits. Product Price and Cost Haircuts will be sold at $20. Hair color services will range from $40 to $100. Hair......

Influence of Mathematics on Economics

...Influence of Math on Economics In: Business and Management Influence of Math on Economics Influence of Math on Economics Michelle Balmer, Marcie Holland, Beverly Segars, Israel Figueroa, and Porshia Cross MTH 110 Rigoberto Martinez March 17, 2012 The Influence of Math on Economics The history of mathematics is an investigative study of the discoveries of mathematics methods and notations from the past. The study of mathematics began in the 6th century BC with the Pythagoreans who coined the ancient Greek term mathematics with the meaning subject of instruction. Before the spread of knowledge, mathematics was written expressions of the development of Babylonian, Egyptian, and Pythagorean Theorem, which demonstrate the basics of arithmetic and geometry. Arithmetic is one of the oldest forms of mathematics used by Antoine-Augustin Cournot and Joseph Louis Francois Bertrand for tasks of simple day-to-day counting to science and business activities. Arithmetic involves the study of quantity as it relates to addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Mathematicians refer to the more advanced term of number theory. Antoine-Augustin Cournot and Joseph Louis Francois Bertrand’s influence on mathematics lay the foundation of the economic effect of the application method on economic theory and analysis of how it will affect others. Each allows individuals to form a meaningful......

Greek Influence

...Gretchel M. Quinones HUMA 101 WORK SHOP 4 Essay Ricardo Serano Greek science and math the influence: Development of Science Long time ago, people lacked knowledge on why certain things happened. Without scientific answers, like we have today, the Ancient Greeks created their own answers about the world and an individual’s place in it. By doing the research for this essay I had learn a lot of the Greeks contribution in science and math methods. Science in Ancient Greece was based on logical thinking and mathematics. It was also based on technology and everyday life. The arts in Ancient Greece were sculptors and painters. The Greeks wanted to know more about the world, the heavens and themselves. People studied about the sky, sun, moon, and the planets. The Greeks found that the earth was round. Many important people contributed to Greek scientific thought and discoveries. Biology, a very vast and interesting topic, was studied by Hippocrates, Aristotle, Theophrastus, Dioscorides, Pliny, and Galen. These men were among the main researchers of Greek biology who contributed many ideas, theories, and discoveries to science. Some of their discoveries were observations, descriptions, and classifications of the various forms of plants and animal life. Other discussions in biology were natural selection and zoology. All living things were the basic concern of biology. Greek biologists were interested in how living things began, how they developed, how they functioned, and...

My Interest In Mathematics

...Today the use of applied mathematics to solve challenging problems in science and engineering or related fields by using numerical computation have reached to a new level. Computation is today considered as a very important tool needed for the advancement of scientific knowledge and engineering practice along with theory and experiment. In the modern world all sorts of calculations are done by sophisticated computer systems. Every company and research farms from small-scale to large-scale are getting more and more reliant on mathematical principles these days. Numerical simulation has enabled the study of complex systems and natural phenomena that would be too expensive or sometimes impossible, to study directly by experimentation. As a matter of fact, engineers and scientists now require solid knowledge of computer science and applied mathematics in order to get optimized output from a system. To make things easier in this matter, Scientific Computing is a discipline that conglomerates Mathematics, Computer Science and Engineering in a single degree program and utilizes mathematical models in computer simulations to solve complex problems for not only in science laboratories but also in business and engineering firms. I have always been fascinated by the application of mathematics and computer science in the real world problems. That is why...

Paul Erdos

...Erdos Hungarian born Paul Erdos is considered one of the greatest mathematicians of all time in society. As a young man, Erdos had to deal with the struggle of life as he endured the times of World War II. During this time, he came to a love of mathematics, solving multiple types of problems and gaining mastery on them. Throughout the rest of his life, he never was married, never truly lived in a house or had any possessions for that matter, and dedicated his life to solving more complex mathematical problems. He sought to teach the world more about mathematics and how it can help in life for more fruitful and interesting years to live. He was and still is loved by fellow mathematicians in today’s time as Erdos numbers were and are assigned to people, one would designate that the person actually consulted with Erdos to write a paper, and two would be assigned to someone who consulted with a Erdos number one person etc. In his true and pure dedication to the love of his life, mathematics, Erdos would travel university-to-university and door-to-door of other high-minded mathematicians and would want to learn from them or teach them constantly saying, “ my mind is open for thought.” Through his life, he made many extreme advances in mathematics and actually contributed to the learning and elements of Computer Science. These advances include those of combinatorics, his multiple mathematical theories and the graph theory. One major contribution that Erdos gave to the computer......

Discrete Mathematics

...Discrete mathematics is the study of mathematical structures that are fundamentally discrete rather than continuous. In contrast to real numbers that have the property of varying "smoothly", the objects studied in discrete mathematics – such as integers, graphs, and statements in logic[1] – do not vary smoothly in this way, but have distinct, separated values.[2] Discrete mathematics therefore excludes topics in "continuous mathematics" such as calculus and analysis. Discrete objects can often be enumerated by integers. More formally, discrete mathematics has been characterized as the branch of mathematics dealing with countable sets[3] (sets that have the same cardinality as subsets of the natural numbers, including rational numbers but not real numbers). However, there is no exact definition of the term "discrete mathematics."[4] Indeed, discrete mathematics is described less by what is included than by what is excluded: continuously varying quantities and related notions. The set of objects studied in discrete mathematics can be finite or infinite. The term finite mathematics is sometimes applied to parts of the field of discrete mathematics that deals with finite sets, particularly those areas relevant to business. Research in discrete mathematics increased in the latter half of the twentieth century partly due to the development of digital computers which operate in discrete steps and store data in discrete bits. Concepts and notations from discrete mathematics are......
