What is your mindset? Do you think like an employee or an entrepreneur? As I was watching the videos for chapter one on business mindset, I started thinking about all the people I know that are business owners vs. those who are employees. How do their mindsets and thinking differ? I started thinking about that and realized that there is a huge difference in the way both groups think. Throughout this paper I will go thru some of the characteristics and examples of both. Whether we choose to work for a business or to start our own, our ability to identify our mindset as well as the companies can lead to successful business relationships or disaster. Typically companies that value entrepreneurial thinking tend to undervalue folks who think like employees. On the other hand, those that value employee thinking tend to find entrepreneurial thinkers disruptive, difficult to manage and counterproductive to the organizational goals. My goal for this paper is for the reader to be able to have a good idea on whether their mindset is more like an “employee” or “business owner” mindset. Let’s start off with “Business Owner”. An entrepreneur knows the business and supports the work. They are all about a good business functioning well. They care about performance and process. An entrepreneur sees how their parts fit within the whole and want to ensure that the parts come together well every time. The organizational chart is a reference. Entrepreneurs want to blur the boundaries of their roles to work more closely with others who impact their work. They are planners first, a negotiator, a visionary, and a thinker. They see the work and the tools as a means to the goal. They build strategy and constantly test it. An entrepreneur uses business controls and necessities,” to track and manage the work. They want to do more of what works

Vernon does not feel that it is in the company’s best interest to expand outside of their core business, whereas Bud feel that the AAA Transportation is not stable enough at this time to compete with establish nonperishable transportation companies. Rosner states, in the words of Bob Pike, president of Minneapolis-based Creative Training Techniques, “Most people come to training with one of four mindsets: as a learner, a networker, a vacationer or a prisoner” (Rosner, 2009). These mindsets that people possess can make the training better or worse for the people attending it. If they come in with a learning mindset then they tend to more focused on what they are about to learn. They are more involved in the training and understand what they are there for. The networker mindset person is there for learning but they want to network with other people within the class. They are looking to make connections in order to have more connections for a later date, maybe for a better job or for something they may need in their current company. The vacationer mindset person is there to get away from everything not to learn. They want to get away from the office and enjoy their time away.
