What you do not know about the beliefs of Jehovah’s Witnesses?

Abstract

Jehovah’s Witness (JW); who are they, what do Jehovah Witnesses represent, why do JW’s not celebrate birthdays, why do JW’s refuse blood transfusions? Many questions arise surrounding the Jehovah Witness beliefs and views on life which bring many misconceptions to people whom are not affiliated to Jehovah Witnesses. This report explores the beliefs, views, misconceptions and relationship of Jehovah Witness practices which I identified during the attendance of a Jehovah’s Witness meeting (which is commonly known in Baptist religious as Sunday service) as well as thorough research around JW’s practices which was conducted before the attendance of the JW meeting.
Jehovah‘s Witnesses are followers of a Christian based religious movement. The denomination was founded in the USA towards the end of the 19th century, under the leadership of Charles Taze Russell. The headquarters of the movement is in New York. There are about 6.9 million active witnesses in 235 countries, including 1 million in the USA and 130,000 in the UK (bbc.com).
Members of the JW practice are probably best known for their door to door evangelical work; witnessing from house to house, offering bible literature and recruiting and converting people to the truth. Jehovah Witnesses are highly motivated people and known for proselytizing the religion to people of other religions. Although the religion is Christian based, JW’s believe traditional Christian Churches have deviated from the true teaching of the Bible and do not work in full harmony with God (bbc.com).

Misconceptions

Personally, I had many misconceptions of the beliefs and practices of Jehovah’s Witnesses. Partially due to my own lack of knowledge and understanding of the denomination which is part of Christianity. Although I am a Baptist Christian, I did not recognize the huge similarities and differences between the two religions until I actively attended a JW meeting Wednesday, February 27th, 2013 with Sister Tisharia Mack. For people who are not aware, the congregation addresses other JW’s by “Brother” or “Sister” following their last name; e.g. Sister Smith. This displays unity within the congregation.
Sister Mack and I attended high school together; therefore I was very much familiar with her and knew she was a JW. Therefore, it was more comforting knowing someone who is part of the religion, explaining the purpose of me attending a meeting, and having her accept the invitation which allowed me to ask questions to gain a greater understanding, facts and dissolve my misconceptions.
Common misconceptions that plagued my mind surrounding Jehovah Witnesses Practices and beliefs: * JW’s are rewarded for proselytizing and door to door evangelical work. * Refusal of blood transfusion is based upon a selfish act of the religion, to separate themselves from other religions. * Kingdom Halls are built without windows to prevent violent acts against the religion during meeting time * Paradise is considered as Hell after death.

There are several controversial practices; refusal of blood transfusions, non-celebration of Christ birthday or Easter, men are not allowed to grow their hair long hair, non-association with anyone not in their religion. As a result, these extremely controversial practices altered my thought process of JW’s. Therefore, my misconceptions of JW’s beliefs and practices did not seem out of norm to me. Attending the JW meeting one Wednesday evening at 7PM, for approximately 1 ½ hours provided me enormous insight with practices of the Jehovah Witnesses and answered the aforementioned “WHY” questions of the JW’s beliefs and practices.
As I entered the Kingdom Hall which is known as Church for Baptist Christians, I immediately began to understand why the congregation addresses each other by “Sister” and “Brother”. The brothers and sisters immediately recognize your presence, befriend you, engage in conversation and make you feel as if you are part of family. This is all part of unity which JW’s are advocates of an again, why JW’s address each other by Sister and brother. Brother Rogers was the speaker that Wednesday evening and he spoke directly from the bible about “Loving one Another to Eternal life; with easy decisions to make while having life on Earth.” Through his word, I received more clarity around why JW’s do not practice blood transfusions, celebration of birthdays and why JW’s do not believe Jesus died on the cross.
Brother Rogers provide scriptures from the bible (Leviticus 17:10 and Acts 15:29) addressing blood transfusions, why the decision is easy (consider hard decisions to non-JW’s) to make in life and loving one another through to external life will provide a life in Paradise. Brother Rogers went on to speak about how accepting blood defiles the body and the blood wich can hell a JW, is the blood of God. Sister Mack allowed me to interview her to provide facts around JW’s beliefs and some of my misconceptions below: * JW’s are rewarded for proselytizing and door to door evangelical work. * Sister Mack Response: JW’s are not rewarded. This is a natural part of fulfilling their commitment to God and their responsibility. * Refusal of blood transfusion is based upon a selfish act of the religion, to separate themselves from other religions. * Sister Mack Response: That is not a true statement. JW’s are not selfish people and must act with ethics. Based upon God’s word in Genesis 9:3-4 and Acts 15:19-21, JW’s must abstain from things polluted by idols, what has been strangled, and from blood. Blood can be contaminated and defile the body. * Kingdom Halls are built without windows to prevent violent acts against the religion during meeting time * Sister Mack Response: It is true in most cases Halls do not have windwos. There are very few halls with windows based upon laws of different states. Windows are not placed in halls for various reasons; protection from vandalism of property and cost (most JW’s build the hall).
The interview was the best part of the project as I asked over 20 questions which provided me a deeper dive in the life of a Jehovah Witness and a more analytical understanding of facts verses preconceived thoughts and connotations of ones ideas about a religion and why the religion do or do not do practice or serve the same as other religions. In addition to how JW’s interpretation of the bible, verses how Baptist Christians interpret the bible. The interview was definitely a positive mind altering experience.

It is very common that people have misconceptions of others religion which weuntil my questions were answered the meeting and by Sister Mack. Uganda is known for its eye catching and diverse landscapes which make Uganda known as the Pearl of Africa. Uganda’s population is 33.4 million with a 73 percent literacy rate, $409 average annual income, access to safe water 67 percent and life expectancy of 54 years old. High unemployment rates and food insecurity face most Ugandans, especially in rural areas. About 35 percent of the population lives below poverty line. Many communities face chronic hunger, and the world food program estimates that over 30 percent of children are stunted from malnutrition (Rattue. P).
Health concerns also threaten Ugandans; Malaria, respiratory infections, and diarrhea are primary causes of death month children. More than 940, 00 people are living with HIV and AIDS and more than 1.2 million children have lost one or both parents to this disease.
Ugandan’s health and life expectancy is among the lowest across the globe. The country health performance is rated at 186th out of 191 nations. This says a lot of why every 200 births in Uganda ends the mother’s life, malaria accounts for 14 percent of all deaths, less than 10 percent of children fewer than five are sleeping under insecticide-treated nets. Some of this derives from poor and erratic drug distribution, lack of trained medical staff and equipment, funding for medical needs, education around diseases and health, and preventive healthcare (Thomas. V).
Over 51 percent of the Ugandan’s do not have access to medical facilities to become treated and tested. Because, HIV/AIDS are the common diseases in Uganda, other diseases are misdiagnosed which go untreated and patients began to die. Due to the high rate of deaths and misdiagnoses of diseases outside of HIV/AIDS, the government is beginning to look deeper into issue of other potential diseases which are raiding the community of Uganda such as Cancer.
Cervical and breast cancers are the biggest killers among women in Uganda, while prostate, liver lung and urinary bladder cancers are common among men. According to the National Cervical Cancer Coalition, the figures are unclear but the WHO report published 1,932 women in Uganda die of cervical cancer each year and more than 2,400 are diagnosed with the disease. Cervical cancer is the biggest cancer killer among women in the country and with 40 cases per 100,000 women; Uganda has one of the highest burdens of cervical cancer cases worldwide. The prevalence of HIV/AIDS has also exacerbated the situation in Uganda. More than 60% of cancer patients were found to be infected with HIV/AIDS. People who are HIV-positive have a higher risk of getting all types of cancers. The figures are concerning both the medical profession and politicians. While there is an increase of cancer cases, the response from the government in terms of resources and manpower to manage the disease has been inadequate (Thomas. V).
The question now become what is the government doing to protect the country from challenges of healthcare?
Cancer incidence and mortality varies significantly between developed and developing countries. However, a key challenge when attempting to define the scale of the problems of cancer control in developing countries such as Uganda, is the lack of reliable statistics (Sharma, V). Reliable statistics are imperative in order for government to begin shoveling out funds to a “new” disease within the country. The Ugandan government has announced plans to introduce regional screening for cancer. The president Yoweri Museveni plans to launch a campaign against cancer with regional screening programs to allow for earl detection (Kelly, A). According to the state minister for youth and children’s affairs, Jessica Alupo, Museveni has order the delivery of equipment for cancer screening to all regional hospitals (Kelly, A). The purpose is to help identify cancers, especially breast, cervical and prostate cancer, as early as possible. Also, this is helping prevent misdiagnosis of the disease. As stated before, cancer normally go untreated due to the large number of HIV/AIDS cases and both diseases can have similar symptoms.
Government is also providing more education around cancer. Most Ugandans do not have a real concept of cancer as a disease that can be diagnosed and treated. In some tribal languages, there is no word for it. The people do not know they even have cancer, therefore the people do not see the value of seeking treatment. Once a person is diagnosed with cancer, people believe it is a death sentence because of the lack of knowledge. However, in most cases within Uganda, it is a death sentence because most people do not see a doctor until the very last stages of cancer. At that point, no hospital of Uganda can do much for the patient (Silberner. J).
US government has provided over 400 million dollars towards healthcare in Uganda. The US Government shared vision for Uganda is one in which the government and the private sector are capable of committed to and taking concrete steps toward ensuring that the health system continuously provides the kind of quality, accessible, affordable, effective, and timely care that women and newborns need. The U.S. team in Uganda intends to pursue a coordinated program, in full support of and fully aligned with the government of Uganda’s health priorities to accelerate reductions in maternal, can cancer mortality and facilitate the consolidation of a formal and community health system that is function, responsive, and sustainable (ghi.gov).
In summary, Uganda continues to have a long way to go to catch up with effective health care for the millions of people which reside in the small population of Uganda. However, the government is making huge strides to begin protecting the people and offering services to reduce the risk of deaths which is caused by Cancer. With effective education about cancer, people are now less afraid of the disease and beginning the positive trending of early detection.

Business Operation

...Business Operation: An operational plan is an essential component to a business plan because it tells the reviewer how you plan to get your product/service out to market. All businesses need plans of operation with definitive time lines to accomplish goals and deadlines for reaching those goals. It should involve tracking the progress of sales, the development of employees and profits. It must be flexible. You create a business operational plan by defining several major goals that should be met within the next three years. Write a list of short-term goals needed to support each long-term goal, and then break the plan of action for each large goal into daily, weekly and monthly tasks. Assign these tasks to specific employees and document all the obstacles impeding the process of reaching long-term business goals. Designate time frames for every short-term and long-term goal. Notice what is working and what is not working. Then write an accountability system into the operational plan. Finally Review all business activities and profits you expect for every quarter. Describing your Business In order to prevent your executive summary from being too long, and to give readers more detail on what your business actually does, you'll want to include a business description section in your business plan. You probably spend most of your waking hours (and some of your sleeping hours) thinking about your business. You understand what you do, how you do it and why you do it better than...

...Production and Operations Management Strayer University May 14, 2011 Production and Operations Management On April 20, 2010, the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig exploded fifty miles from the coast of Louisiana, killing eleven men and setting off the largest oil disaster in U.S. history. Its impact would reverberate well beyond the Deepwater Horizon and the families of the eleven men who died, and even beyond the people and places of the Gulf of Mexico. Known as the BP spill, this tragedy seemingly was not an isolated incident. According to Juhasz (2011), “BP was not a lone actor; rather, this tragedy was the predictable outcome of an industry that has pushed well beyond its own technological capacity and beyond the government’s ability to regulate it” (p. 2). This oil well disaster has had important ramifications for the future of our country. In order to tackle the nation’s energy crisis, there must be an establishment of an orderly transition from crude oil to an affordable, sustainable energy future. The purpose of this paper is to explore ways of converting crude oil to consumer fuels. The paper will examine Marathon Oil’s product process and give a determination as to which phase shows a need for the greatest efficiency improvements. A pre-procurement card study of transactions costs for items that did not have an established contract revealed an average transactions cost of $150. This includes the cost to requisition, place, receive and inspect, and process payment through accounts payable. A study after initiating procurement cards revealed an average transactions cost of $50, which includes user time for reconciliation. Furthermore, users appear satisfied with the procurement card system. Before full-scale launching of the card, purchasing conducted a six-month trial program with 300 users. After the trial period, purchasing surveyed these users concerning their satisfaction with the card program. More than 75 percent were positive about the procurement card program. Negative comments came from high- volume transaction users who were not prepared or organized to do a monthly reconciliation. Assess How a Selected Business Could Improve the Ethics of Their Operations

...There are many things Tesco’s can do to improve their operations ethically, which I am going to explain below how. There are a number of ways how organisations can improve the way they operate ethically and I will be assessing how a large organisation such as Dial-a-Phone can function more ethically. Dial-a-phone is national mobile phone provider who are owned by the even bigger company Phones 4U. Organisations are often scrutinised for not operating more ethically, and it is important that organisations act on this criticism. From a customer’s point of view, people often take concern in the modern issues of today’s world and they like to know that the company’s they purchase from are taking in their concerns and taking certain measures to make sure that they are acting as ethically as possible whether this be towards the environment, carbon footprint, produce, supplies and work staff. From an organization's point of view the company want to make sure that they operate ethically because it attracts customers, investor’s new employees and sales. As I have just stated there is a market segment of customers who would like to purchase ethically made and designed products so it is vital the organisation target this market by operating more ethically to boost their sales. Investors also take interest in ethical companies because they know that an organisation is going to turn over more revenue if it starts operating ethically, or for personal reasons such as they themselves would...

...INTRODUCTION AND BUSINESS DESCRIPTION 2.1 INTRODUCTION Fast food restaurant, also known as a quick service restaurant (QSR) within the industry itself, is a specific type of restaurant characterized both by its fast food cuisine and by minimal table service. Food served in fast food restaurants typically caters to a " meat-sweet diet" and is offered from a limited menu; is cooked in bulk in advance and kept hot; is finished and packaged to order; and is usually available ready to take away, though seating may be provided. Fast food restaurants are usually part of a restaurant chain or franchise operation, which provisions standardized ingredients and/or partially prepared foods and supplies to each restaurant through controlled supply channels. Constructing Formulas for Mathematical Operations in Excel (Basic Tips and Techniques)

...Constructing Formulas for Mathematical Operations in Excel (Basic Tips and Techniques) Michelle A. Applequist Computer Information Systems (CIS105) Professor Hari Dhungana Strayer University September 1, 2009 Constructing Formulas for Mathematical Operations in Excel Microsoft Excel uses formulas to construct mathematical operations in a worksheet. After data have been entered into the worksheet, you can perform calculations, analyze data, and create charts. An Excel formula (calculations you create) and functions (formulas pre-existing in Excel) calculates the data entered in the worksheet. Formulas calculate numbers in a particular order. “Excel has one of the most comprehensive set of formulas, not only to perform calculations but also to manage data and records. It also has the ability to instantaneously re-calculate the results as the raw data changes” (Khoo, 2006-9, para. 2). To construct a formula after you have entered data, you must click in the cell that you want the results to appear in, and then type the formula. You can construct formulas by using the sum function, and editing numbers in a cell. It is stated that: Sum is an Excel function—a prewritten formula. Sum indicates the type of calculation that will take place (addition). When the sum function is activated, Excel looks above the active cell for a range of cells to sum. If there is no range above the cell, Excel will look to the left for a range of cells to...

For example, we are not using the same Honda car which our parents used 20 years back. We say simply it is old fashioned, we always look for a change and new ones. Proper research is required to introduce changes, if they do not spend on R & D, they lose their market share. * In more productive issues, for expansion, that is expanding product lines, new products, services and new businesses to gain profits. * And in technology, to be more competitive and also as technology makes work easier and faster, and through this companies can increase their sales and make more money. * Reducing costs is also critical for a business to gain competitive advantage: Material cost, which includes Direct labor and direct material have to be reduced to gain competitive...
