Why did the first social networking site fail? Is there anything they could have done to survive?

When SixDegrees.com was launched, the awareness for social networks was not as apparent. Even though the website was able to garner initial curiosity by allowing users to create profiles and inviting and accepting friends but it was difficult for them to gain momentum; since many users felt that the website was not ‘interesting enough’, as there was nothing more to do than accepting and inviting friends. Furthermore, there were no complimentary services or enough advertisement to bring more members into the network nor was there a strong network which would allow the website to integrate more functionality.

The only thing that would have enabled them to survive would be to either create a stronger network or to advertise and publicize the website, maybe even offer some deals when the users sign up. But, eventually in order to succeed they would have to build a network and add functionality according to customer likes/dislikes and needs.

What factors made Myspace more successful than Friendster and SixDegrees.com? What factors enabled Facebook to overtake MySpace?

Both Friendster and SixDegrees.com even though introduced the social networking phenomenon, lacked in the sophistication and the ease of use that the latter incorporated into their site after learning from their mistakes. MySpace launched after both Friendster and SixDegrees.com and removed the disliked features, but at the same time kept the features that the users like to their benefit. Allowing all users to view each other’s profile was one of the strongest changes that Myspace made. Myspace was also constructed in a user friendly manner and allowed the user to customize their profile by adding their

Business Culture in Swiss

...Business hierarchy in Switzerland The Swiss appreciate sobriety, thrift, tolerance, punctuality and a sense of responsibility. This is reflected in the way they do business. The business climate is very formal and conservative and companies are structured in the traditional vertical manner.  The culture of companies can vary somewhat, depending on whether they are in the German, French or Italian areas of Switzerland. Overall, one can say that decisions are taken at the top of the organisation. In most organisations employees have little responsibility, although this differs from one company to another.  The many international companies in Geneva have a more American management culture, they are less hierarchic and employees hold more responsibility. Strategy Generally, the management of an organisation is at large responsible for the planning. Most companies use detailed planning with a tight schedule, although organisations in the French and Italian areas may have a more laid-back approach to strategy. Most of the planning is long term. Swiss business meetings Meetings are generally impersonal, brisk, orderly, planned and task-oriented. It is important to prepare yourself in advance of a business meeting.  The Swiss tend to get right down to business after a few minutes of general discussion. Be aware of the fact that non-verbal communication, such as body language, is very important and varies from region to region in Switzerland. Note that organisation,...

Japanese Falling Asleep on Meetings

...out the visual stimulus and focusing only on the sound” (Koop, 2011, p.109). After I was reading this case study, and I wondered what would be my reaction if people stayed silent after I spoke? A lot of things came through my mind. For example, as a Hispanic I would think that Japanese falling asleep during my speech is rude and disrespectful. Probably, I would walk away and leave the office. But I have to consider that not all cultures and customs are the same as ours. On the other hand, I would put my mind working and begin thinking that Japanese are probably evaluating my speech, are visualizing my ideas, or that like the author states, “I’m so boring that this key person is sleeping” ( Koop, 2011, p.109). I have to think that in the business world, I might find people that will like my speech and others that won’t. As I always say that this world everything is not rosy. I might have my ups and downs, but always with a positive mind. I will try to make a better speech for the people and that I will make sure that they don’t stay silent. People’s opinion is...

...Cultural Diversity If a United States business owner was to do business in China or France they would need to know a few helpful things. In China, being a guest it is important to know that they treat the guest with a great deal of kindness and respect. They allow the guest to do whatever they please because it is considered rude if they refuse a request they make; even smoking in their place of business if that is what the guest wanted to do. Chinese also believe the number four is bad luck so a person should avoid this number at all costs. If a person was to give a gift, the Chinese like things that are even numbers; except the number four. The numbers six and eight are considered very lucky, so if a person can incorporate those numbers they will do well. The personal space is a bit different, the Chinese get inside of your bubble. They stand very close, sit close, walk close to a person. The article on Chinahighlights.com says “In China a reasonable bodily separation may be virtually nonexistent. Therefore there is no “excuse me” or tap on the shoulder given when reaching across someone’s place at a table or pushing past on a crowded street.” Upon meeting someone in China shaking hands, nodding, or bow is also very common. Some instances when being introduced to a group the Chinese may greet you with applause, a person should applaud back. Also a person should greet the most senior person first and then descend from there. A person should not blow into a handkerchief and...

...spills of molten steel. Any attempts by workers to improve their work conditions were uniformly rejected, and Carnegie routinely crushed any of the workers’ attempts to unionize. When Carnegie decided to get out of the steel business he sold his company “lock, stock, and barrel” to a consortium of New York investors for $485 million. The company was renamed U.S. Steel, and it is still one of the largest U.S. steel- makers today. The investors paid a high price for Carnegie’s company because they knew they could use its low-cost, competitive advantage to create a monopoly in the steel industry—which is exactly what they did. U.S. Steel kept the price of steel high and made huge profits for decades. Of course, Carnegie sold his company knowing this would likely happen. This further tarnished his reputation.1 • Jones: Introduction To Business: How Companies Create Value for People I. The Environment of Business 2. The Evolution of Business © The McGraw−Hill Companies, 2007 38 Chapter Two The earliest writings about business date back to Mesopotamia in 3000 BC and were discovered by archaeologists in what is now the Middle East. Business goes back to the Stone Age, however. Economists regard the clan, or tribe, as the earliest form of organized “business” activity. The division of labor between a clan’s members into skilled hunters, food gatherers, craftspeople, priests, shaman, and sages is a good example of how these people organized their activities. Carvin vs. Arkansa Power and Light

...Case Study 4 CARVIN vs. ARKANSA POWER AND LIGHT, 14 F.3d 399, 1993 U.S. Court of Appeals for Eighth Circuit You be the Judge By: Jenny Wagner December 23, 2009 Did the easement relieve Arkansas Power and Lights from liability for flooding? Yes, Arkansas Power and Light should not be held liable for damage to property cased by flooding where an easement existed. In 1923-1947 Arkansas Power and Light (AP&L) constructed several dams on two Arkansas lakes, Hamilton and Catherine. AP & L obtained “flood easements” on property adjoining the lakes. AP&L sold lake side property and kept the easement in force. These flood easements permitted AP&L to “clear of trees, brush, and other obstruction and to submerge by water” certain acreage, which was described exactly, AP&L properly recorded the easements and when the current landowner bought lakeside property they were aware of the documents (Beatty, 2009, p. 455). In May of 1990, extraordinarily heavy rains caused water to reach the highest levels ever recorded. To prevent flooding to a wider area, AP&L opened the gates of Carpenter Dam causing Lake Catherine to flood which caused damage to several houses built on AP&L’s easement. Several home owners’s subsequently sued AP&L for causing the damage. AP&L should not be held liable for the damage caused by the flooding because the sole purpose for having the easements was to allow AP&L to flood the property. An easement gives one person the...

...COM 101 Essay 2 – Are We Desensitized? LENGTH: 2 -3 Pages (aim for the very bottom of the 2nd page at least) DUE DATE: Rough Draft: Thursday, 10/1 on BB Final Draft: Tuesday, 10/13 on BB ASSIGNMENT: With our current section of articles, we’ve been discussing the concept of whether or not the younger generation (a.k.a. you guys) has been desensitized to things going on in the world. We’ve talked about this potential problem through a few different perspectives. We examined the argument about whether or not we’re desensitized to violence or death due to violent media, like video games. Then, we discussed whether or not we’re desensitized to suffering due to a feeling of helplessness, such as the belief that we can’t change things like economics or the government. Finally, we talked about technology and whether or not it has, in a sense, desensitized us to one another in the way that we interact thanks to new technologies like social media and cell phones. So, for your second essay, you’re going to answer the question of whether or not you believe the current generation is desensitized. However, in order to keep the paper focused and short (since it’s only 2-3 pages), choose just one of the perspectives to argue with or against. The perspective you choose will also determine which articles you use in your essay (you must use AT LEAST ONE). It breaks down much like this: Violence/Death – Narvaez, Jones, Eler Helplessness/Ineffectiveness – Leonhardt, McClelland...
