Ten things we learned this weekend: Kieran Gibbs has England potential, Steven Gerrard is still a force, and losing to Bournemouth is a dangerous game

Ralph Ellis runs you through what we learned from the weekend's football... with some star turns and a look through the leagues, too. This week sees an Arsenal full-back and an England legend impress, while the opening day of the Football League season provides plenty of thrills.

1. Kieran Gibbs was a fixture in Arsenal's defence for most of last season and also played in the Champions League, but fell behind teenager Luke Shaw and veteran Leighton Baines when Roy Hodgson picked his World Cup squad.

The 25-year-old, who won the last of three England caps as a second half sub against Germany in November 2013, is clearly out to jump up the queue.

He was excellent for Arsenal in the Community Shield win over Manchester City – finding a team mate with 32 of 34 passes, more than half of which were in the attacking half of the field.

2. Steven Gerrard might have had a bad World Cup but his commitment to his beloved Liverpool burns as fierce as ever.

At 34 he was one of only four outfield players to go through all 90 minutes of yesterday's 4-0 friendly win over German giants Borussia Dortmund.

VIDEO Liverpool everything to Gerrard - Rodgers

For good measure Gerrard, who was also excellent for boss Brendan Rodgers on the club's tour of America, supplied the corner from which Dejan Lovren scored, as well as having a trademark free kick just tipped over the bar.

3. Lewis Holtby never played 90 minutes of a Premier League game for Tottenham last season and was in and out of Fulham's side too under Felix Magath, who branded him 'not a fighter' towards the end of a loan spell there.

Back in the side: Lewis Holtby has struggled to make an impact at White Hart Lane so far

Webb flattened by Lewis Holtby sliding tackle in testimonial

Back at White Hart Lane with three years of his contract left, the 23-year-old might just have a fresh chance under new boss Mauricio Pochettino.

The German-born son of an English RAF officer played all of Saturday evening's friendly win over his old club Schalke.

4. BBC pundit Steve Claridge will absolutely love Aston Villa's promising teenager Jack Grealish if the 18-year-old forces his way into the Premier League.

Grealish, who had a Villa Park season ticket alongside his dad at the age of four, wears his socks rolled down above ultra light shin pads in just the way Claridge used to do in his heyday for Leicester.

He's clearly not scared of getting kicked, either. The Republic of Ireland youth midfielder gave a dazzling display of mazy dribbling after coming on for the last 25 minutes of Villa's 0-0 friendly draw with Italian side Parma.

Old school: Jack Grealish looked the part and showed he has the potential to make an impact this season

5. The Premier League will hog the headlines from next week, so credit the 72 Football League clubs with doing their best to serve up some entertainment while they could take some of the spotlight.

Starting from Blackburn's 1-1 draw against Cardiff on Friday night, and rounding up with Wolves' 1-0 win over Norwich, not a single one of the 36 fixtures finished as a 0-0 draw.

Even in the Conference it was a good day– only favourites Bristol Rovers at home to Grimsby and Lincoln's clash with Kidderminster ended goalless.

6. Heurelho Gomes marked his first appearance in an English League game for more than three years by keeping a clean sheet for Watford as they beat Bolton 3-0.

The Brazilian who helped Harry Redknapp's Tottenham side reach the Champions League quarter-finals in 2011 has moved there on a free transfer after three frustrating seasons at White Hart Lane where he mostly didn't even sit on the bench behind Hugo Lloris and Brad Friedel.

Now 33, he could turn out to be as important a signing for the Hornets as the return of goalscorer Matej Vydra.

7. Games against Bournemouth should carry a health warning for managers in the Championship.

Mark Robins, who lost his job at Huddersfield yesterday after a 4-0 thrashing at home to the Cherries, is not the first boss to suffer as an owner wonders why Eddie Howe can produce such a fluent side at such a historically tiny club.

On his way: Mark Robins became the first managerial casualty of the season after the 4-0 defeat
+13

Michael Appleton's reign at Blackburn last season also ended just days after being beaten at home by Bournemouth.

8. Wolves manager Kenny Jackett made only two signings in the summer to strengthen his squad for promotion – but they look like good ones.

Dutch winger Rajiv van La Parra, who came on a Bosman free transfer from Heerenveen, gave Martin Olsson such a chasing that the full back got sent off for two fouls.

Then the 23-year-old supplied the cross from which Dave Edwards headed the winner.

Good start: Rajiv van La Parra had a debut to remember, resulting in a red card for Martin Olsson

9. Who said you never win anything with kids? Swindon had three teenagers in the side that thumped Scunthorpe 3-1 and an average age of just 21 in the starting line-up.

Homegrown defender Nathan Thompson – who has been watched by Arsenal, Spurs and Everton – was the oldest outfield player at 23 years and three months.

The nearest boss Mark Cooper had to a veteran was goalkeeper Wes Foderingham – 98 days older than Thompson. Substitute Andy Williams, who is 28 on Thursday, must have felt like an old man.

10. Paul Tisdale lags only behind Arsene Wenger as the game's second longest serving manager in League football after seven years in charge of Exeter.

The 41-year-old might be after another record as the game's oldest player-manager.

He had to name himself on the bench for the 1-1 draw with Portsmouth because his squad is so thin.

Keeping his kit on: He may have been in management for seven years but Tisdale still put himself on the bench

Gibbs has got champion's league experience, unlike Baines and Shaw. Technically he is better than Baines and Shaw. Still shocked that he was not included in the World Cup squad.

Exactly!!!!! Now that Cole has retired and Hodgson didn't bother taking him to the world cup, Gibbs is Englands most experienced and best left back. When he got overlooked for a place in the team over Bertrand not too long ago i lost hope. This kid deserves to be first choice

Business Is Business

...The purpose of business is to provide people with a product or service and we all understand that businesses have those to whom it is responsible, whether it is the stock/shareholder or the consumer. Providing a service or making something is very black or white in the area of product or service responsibilities, where it becomes grey is in the area of social responsibility. Who would have ever dreamed that the same Ford Motor Company that destroyed thousands upon thousands of acres of rain forest in the in the jungles of South America in the early Nineteenth Century in search of an abundance of rubber would today be a champion of eco-fuels and rain forest preservation? Businesses are perceptive and have the fundamental understanding that in order to survive in today’s hypersensitive, politically correct society, they must be perceived as guardians of “what’s in” rather than concentrating on their bottom line because in many instances, that perception ends up affecting their bottom line. God created the universe and all that’s in it for us to enjoy and utilize. In Genesis, we learn that after the fall and the realization of our nakedness that Adam and Eve utilized animal skins in order to cover their bodies due to shame. They actually had to do some “dirty work” in order to make the skins into clothing. This alone tells us that having dominion over the animals and the things of the earth means we are to utilize them as needed but at the same time to be good stewards. ......

... . . . . The Neilsen Rating System The Neilsen Ratings System began as a radio rating system by Arthur Neilsen. The Neilsen Rating System evolved to eventually analyze television data. In 1950, Nielsen moved to television, developing a ratings system using the methods he and his company had developed for radio (Levin, 2006). That method has since become the primary source of audience measurement information in the television industry around the globe. Measuring Ratings The Neilsen Rating system is characterized as a syndicated data provider. A syndicated data provider tracks the change of one or more measures over time, usually in a given industry (Cooper, 2006). Neilsen Rating system makes a very lucrative business for the data that is presented to the entertainment industry, most importantly television. The primary system of measuring data for the Neilsen Rating system is by gathering data and the industry pays up to millions of dollars for periodic reports of data. Devices are used to gather the information. These devices gather the viewing habits of the home and transmit the information nightly to Nielsen through a "Home Unit" connected to a phone line. . . The technology-based home unit system is meant to allow market researchers to study television viewing habits on a minute to minute basis, seeing the exact moment viewers change channels or turn off their TV (Segal, 2007). Another term for this process is Neilsen using set meters. Set......

...Long Range Planning 43 (2010) 172e194 http://www.elsevier.com/locate/lrp Business Models, Business Strategy and Innovation David J. Teece Whenever a business enterprise is established, it either explicitly or implicitly employs a particular business model that describes the design or architecture of the value creation, delivery, and capture mechanisms it employs. The essence of a business model is in defining the manner by which the enterprise delivers value to customers, entices customers to pay for value, and converts those payments to profit. It thus reflects management’s hypothesis about what customers want, how they want it, and how the enterprise can organize to best meet those needs, get paid for doing so, and make a profit. The purpose of this article is to understand the significance of business models and explore their connections with business strategy, innovation management, and economic theory. Ó 2009 Published by Elsevier Ltd. Introduction Developments in the global economy have changed the traditional balance between customer and supplier. New communications and computing technology, and the establishment of reasonably open global trading regimes, mean that customers have more choices, variegated customer needs can find expression, and supply alternatives are more transparent. Businesses therefore need to be more customer-centric, especially since technology has evolved to allow the lower cost provision of information and customer solutions. These...

Sole trader A sole trader is a person that owns the business with or without employees. This is the smallest and most popular type of business in the United Kingdom. In this situation the owner runs the business independently and also the business and the owner have the same legal identity which means if the business owns money the holder owns money. Explain two reason advantage One benefit of being a sole trader is that I retain all the profit that business makes. This is good because the profit that has been made through selling products or service will come back to the owner. This means all the money that will made from the business retain to the owner as he will not need to pay anyone e.g. staff or supervisor, or accounting etc. For example, if the business receives £3500 in a month from selling t-shirts the full £3500 will retain to the owner. This is a huge advantage because firstly, the owner will have more money to spend in marketing or other promoting recourses and secondly, if more money comes in the more it encourages the owner to work harder. This will make me successful because if I retain all of the money I can expand my business in the future and similarly I will have more available to make my business better, e.g. promote my business effectively. For example, if I......
