In order for U.S. sports franchises overcome to increase popularity abroad many franchises to market research. Market research is The process of gathering, analyzing and interpreting information about a market, about a product or service to be offered for sale in that market, and about the past, present and potential customers for the product or service; research into the characteristics, spending habits, location and needs of your business's target market, the industry as a whole, and the particular competitors you face. (Entrepreneur, 2014). Sports and music throughout history has been one thing that has brought people together. U.S sports franchises’ going abroad is not a surprise more of a nature progression. Owning a sports team is no different from any other business the main point is to make money and be the best not just in your city or region but also in the world. Expanding your franchise is important because as the use of the internet expands your views expand as well, because people that cannot see their favorite player play on Television can see it online. My brother loves WWE wresting, they wrestle overseas sometimes and do not show it on Television, and he will watch it online. I will be focusing on how the NBA Franchises increase there popularity abroad. One of the things a U.S franchise needs in order to be successful is a player or players that the fans in other countries can connect with U.S franchises. I remember the NBA Huston rockets going to China to play when Yao Ming was on their team. In a ranking of Top 10 Most Popular Sports in The World in 2014 done by Sportsology Basketball lands at number three behind soccer number one and cricket number two (Sporteology, 2014). Basketball has around 2-3 billion fans in the US, Canada, china and Philippines. Basketball is the third Most Played and Watched Sport in the World. The NBA has been playing abroad since 1978 in Tel Aviv, Israel 35 years later there has been 147 games,20 countries, 43 cities and 7 preseason games played abroad (Scheitrum, 2014).
U.S sport franchises do not have to look far when it comes to cultural differences. From my own experience, there is a big difference from the South to the North. I grew up in New York and the NBA, NFL, and MLB were the sports of choice when I moved to North Carolina it seemed to shift to NCAA basketball and NASCAR. So many franchises have already known how to deal with transaction in different markets, what works, and what doesn’t work. With the NBA having many international players, it is easy for them to expand abroad because fans want to see their favorite player(s) play. In the present day, the internet changes how we interact so the players become more personable and fans interact with them in real time so when the teams go overseas some fans feel as though they know them.
Other governments putting a tariff to protect their industries would not be wise because it would keep companies from wanting to do business there. A tariff is a tax. It adds to the cost of imported goods and is one of several trade policies that a country can enact. (Investopedia, 2014). A foreign tariff raises the costs of domestic producers, which causes them to sell less in those foreign markets. If a company is not making enough money in a certain market, they stop producing the product for that market. Money is the goal for any business no matter how big or small
