The commercial of Cadillac ELR series expresses the discourse of materialism

though sub-discourses of American traditional culture and consumerism. The

commercial starts from a man questions audiences that “ Why we work so hard?,”

“For this stuff?,” this man’s subsequent answer is also what most hardworking

Americans currently agree with. Then he starts to walk from outside to inside and the

moving background is fulfilled with expensive furniture and decorations, which

connotes an ideology that only hardworking people deserve possess those stuff. From

here, it seems this commercial is misleading audiences to think that hard work is

correlated with wealth. This man is talking confidently like he even does not care

about what people from other countries think about his lifestyle in his country. It

The rest lines in the commercial seem to answer this question and try to

reshape people’s current consumerism. This can also be interpreted from its brand

name. In the Roman period, people are characterized with perseverant spirits can use

names of Cattilus and Catilius. Cadillac’s brand concept originates from this. In fact,

Perseverance is bonded with American culture. Therefore, this commercial awakes

Americans’ patriotism and push them to consume blindly on those luxurious stuffs.

And at the end of this commercial, this man changed his casual cloth to a formal suit,

which emphasizes this car’s target consumer again. The design of logo of Cadillac

also has some connections with sub discourse of American culture. The logo looks

like a shield, which connotes as brave. And colors are also correlated to American

culture. For example, red color means courage and enthusiasm; blue represents

morality and purity; yellow is linked with
