Jimmy Carter once said “War may sometimes be a necessary evil. But no matter how necessary, it is always an evil, never a good. We will not learn how to live together in peace by killing each other's children.” What I think Jimmy Carter means by this is even though we see war and inevitable, war is never going to be a good thing. We will never grow as a whole as long as we keep killing each other’s youth. The youth are fighting in the wars of today many not even being able to see tomorrow. The implications that war brings a sense of supreme power and security to the Americas does not make up for the trauma, PTSD disorders, and emotional detachment issues our soldiers face at the end of the day.
Trauma can be experienced one of two ways, physical being wounded or hurt on the outside or mental trauma which is experienced inside the individuals own mind. Both can affect a person’s life drastically, but it’s the mental patients that give the appearance that they have no problems, but upon further examination end up being the lives that where affected the most. In the film “In the Valley of Elah” by Paul Haggis a young woman goes to the police after her war veteran husband drowns their dog in the bathtub, believing she’ll be next only to be turned away. It is very clear that the woman’s husband is suffering from mental trauma. That is why he drowned the dog. Trauma can make you do things you never thought humane. Trauma can change your whole process of thinking. Trauma can change the life of an

Female Pirates

...Female Pirates Kristina A. Paxton (Shaarda) Excelsior College Women have been held to have particular power over the sea. There is an ancient superstition that women are not good for ships. The contradiction between woman as sea power and woman as a sea jinx is hard to understand. Women pirates however rarely brought bad luck to a ship, they were actually very good luck, and their loss to a ship often brought an end to that ships sailing days. The women that sailed the seas came from all walks of life; there were royals such as Queen Teuta of Illyria who sailed in the 200’s B.C., as well as the Irish seafaring clanswoman, Grace O’Malley, who was practically royalty in that culture in the 1500’s. There were also illegitimate daughters of maids and merchants such as Anne Bonny and Mary Read who sailed the Caribbean in the 1600’s, and finally a Chinese prostitute who controlled one of the most powerful pirate fleets the world has ever seen in the 1800’s. Female pirates were once again seen on the seas recently when a woman pirate named Sister Ping (Ching Chui Ping) smuggled Chinese immigrants to the United States and England was caught and imprisoned in 1990. The Pirate code forbade women from being on board a pirate ship, so women typically dressed and carried themselves as a man in order to become a pirate. These women pirates were truly exceptional in their determination and strength of character to seek their fortune in what was not only a dangerous way of life, but...

It did not take long for Anne and Mary to become friends. Some sailors even claimed they were in a romantic relationship. On October 1720, Captain Barnet an ex-pirate, who now is a part of the British army attacked Rackham’s ship called “Revenge”. Calico crew was at a disadvantage because the ship was anchored and most of his crew was drunk. They were celebrating that night because they captured a Spanish commercial. There was not much of a fight because only Mary and Anne resisted but were overpowered. Calico’s crew was taken to Port Royal, a coastal town located in Jamaica. The trial made a big impression after Mary’s and Anne’s background was revealed. The book is about a family’s life in poverty and their struggle to get out of it. Calico Joe is about an aspiring, young baseball player who is breaking all the records. Then a tragic incident happens causing his baseball dreams to be ruined. When reading these books you learn the true meaning of “Don’t judge a book by its cover.” At first glance, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith seemed very intimidating. Ghost Whisperer

...myself. I opened my closet door and saw a young girl. Her red hair in pigtails with two blue bows tied at the top. The bows matched her blue dress. She had frilly socks with dress shoes on and she smiled it me. It was at that moment her appearance changed. She was soaked like she had went swimming in her clothes or got caught out in the rain. Tears ran down her face. One of her pigtails was undone and a bow was missing, along with one of her shoes. She mouthed “help me” then disappeared. Maybe it was a child that drowned. I opened my laptop up and went to google. “Girl drowns in Ohio” I typed hoping that would be enough to find out more information about her. One link pops up, I click it and skim through the page. “Local girl, Elise Calico, age 7, disappears from party in 1990. No witnesses report seeing her leave the area. How Did The Industrial Revolution Affect The Textile Industry

...and all the way to Asia. The Industrial Revolution affected the textile industry in India in multiple ways. One reason for why India’s textile industry went from being the world’s only major exporter of woven textiles, to a textile industry which was practically out of business was because of the Calico Act. Rondo Cameron, an American professor of Economic History, stated that the Calico Act which banned the import of cotton fabric from India into Britain, “stimulated a domestic cotton textile industry based on imported raw cotton, which eventually became the cradle of the so-called Industrial Revolution” (158). In other words, Britain created the Calico Act as an attempt to expand and improve their own textile industry, as well as to protect British manufactures by banning the import of textiles from India. Further on, the British government did not only enforce the Calico Act, but as they had already conquered India, they were in the position of being able to enter and dominate India’s textile industry which was India’s number one contributor to their economy. Hence, Britain’s domination over India, they were able to make India the market of the British textile products. The Calico Act, the inability of the Indian weavers of meeting the new British factory standards and the British conquest of India led to the withering of the Indian textile industry. As stated by McNeil and McNeil in their book, “before the British textile invasion, weavers around the world had produced...

Essay On Goldfish

...The Shubunkin goldfish have been developed from mutations in telescope eye goldfish (Demekins) back in 1900 in Japan. Diet: Omnivore. In the wild, they feed on a wide range of food including plants, small crustaceans, insects, and detritus. In captivity, they will accept most aquarium food including pellets, flakes, and live prey such as worms. Additional information: The Shubunkin, also known as the “Poor Mans Koi” or Chu-wen-chin in China is a type of single-tailed goldfish with calico colors: a combination of orange, white, black, red, and blue markings. They are good swimmers, relatively hardy and adaptable, so they are an excellent for a novice fishkeeper. In the wild, goldfish are native of Asia where they became popular during the Tang Dynasty (618 – 907). At this time it was popular to keep carp in ponds. Some of these carp displayed yellowish orange colour rather than silver coloration. So they began to breed the yellowish orange variety instead of the silver variety and created what we call today the Common goldfish. The Shubunkin goldfish have been developed from mutations in telescope eye goldfish (Demekins) back in 1900 in...

Cherokee Indian Stomp Dance

...attire for women. The tear dress is believed to be the style of dress from the Trail of Tears era, when most women no longer had access to scissors because most of their personal and household belongings were taken away. Therefore, the material was torn from big pieces of fabric. Tear dresses are created from a calico print material, with a pattern of diamonds on the yoke area and around the skirt. Some Cherokee seamstresses have became more creative as to using designs of triangles, circles, and even the traditional seven-sided star of the Cherokee. The dresses had 3/4 length sleeves; it also had a skirt length of mid-calf. Another feature is the button down top. The sleeves are sometimes worn full-length. Little girl's’ dresses are usually buttoned up in the back. Today the tear dress has been modified to be worn floor length, except for Stomp Dance shell shakers, usually wear calf-length tear dresses because of the shell shackles. The ribbon shirt is the more common outfit for men. The ribbon shirt is also made from calico fabric, with ribbon designs on the front and back. The sleeves are made similar to the tear dress. The traditional turban, also made from calico, is still worn by some men. These outfits have remained in their culture for years and still to this day remain.
