...The Call Triangle: student, teacher and institution Learning register variation. A web-based platform for developing diaphasic skills∗ Adriano Allora, Elisa Corino and Cristina Onesti Dipartimento di Scienze Letterarie e Filologiche - Università di Torino Via Sant’Ottavio 20, Torino 10124, Italy Abstract The present paper shows the first results of a linguistic project devoted to the construction of web learning tools for reinforcing sensitivity to diaphasic varieties and for learning style variation in L2/LS learning. Keywords: L2/LS learning; style variation; web based platform 1. Introduction This paper aims at presenting a project analysing formal varieties of European online languages, working on a suite of Net Mediated Communication (NMC) corpora and studying lexical, discourse and macro-syntactic phenomena. The practical implications of the studies aim at developing freely available resources devoted to L2/LS learning and the development of a web-based delivery platform. 2. The VALERE project The project (‘Varietà Alte di Lingue Europee in REte’: Formal Varieties in Newsgroups of European Languages: Structural Features, Interlinguistic Comparison and Teaching Applications) aims at investigating the wide range of formal language in some main European languages with particular attention to NMC. The research is based on the NUNC (i.e. Newsgroup UseNet Corpus1), a collection of corpora created from newsgroup messages implemented at the......

Log Pearson

...Log-Pearson Type III Distribution What is it? The Log-Pearson Type III distribution is a statistical technique for fitting frequency distribution data to predict the design flood for a river at some site. Once the statistical information is calculated for the river site, a frequency distribution can be constructed.  The probabilities of floods of various sizes can be extracted from the curve. The advantage of this particular technique is that extrapolation can be made of the values for events with return periods well beyond the observed flood events. This technique is the standard technique used by Federal Agencies in the United States. How is it calculated? The Log-Pearson Type III distribution is calculated using the general equation: where x is the flood discharge value of some specified probability,  is the average of the log x discharge values, K is a frequency factor, and  is the standard deviation of the log x values. The frequency factor K is a function of the skewness coefficient and return period and can be found using the frequency factor table.  The Log-Pearson Type III distribution tells you the likely values of discharges to expect in the river at various recurrence intervals based on the available historical record. This is helpful when designing structures in or near the river that may be affected by floods. It is also helpful when designing structures to protect against the largest expected event. For this reason, it is customary to perform the......

Food Log

...Food log reflection paper This assignment changed my eating habits a little bit. There were times I noticed the food I was eating was not as healthy as it should have been. The logging of the food was kind of in the middle as far as difficulty. The hardest part was finding all the information such as fat, protein, and carbohydrates. Also I would forget over the weekends to log in what I ate and would have to backtrack the meals. I would not make my Marines keep a food log but I would definitely suggest trying it for two weeks like we did. It will give them the chance to find out some eating habits that are not as healthy as they thought they were eating. I think the Marine Corps tries to promote healthy eating but due to the tempo we were in because of the war some things were higher priorities. The chow hall sometimes does not always promote the healthiest of food and by having a meal card it gets expensive trying to buy food. I noticed that days before PT I would eat healthier than days I did not have PT. I think it changed because mentally I would think I could do better on PT and not have as hard of a time. My nutrition habits on the weekends changed for the worst. I would not go to the chow hall and I would just eat at all the fast food places on base or off base. My overall assessment of the assignment of the food log is that I did eat unhealthy at times but I ate more healthy food than unhealthy. I gained a lot of knowledge as far as there are different tools out......

Learning Log

...LEARNING LOGS or A REFLECTIVE LEARNING JOURNAL One way of developing evidence of your skills and knowledge development is to engage in the process of producing a learning log or learning journal. A learning log is basically a record or journal of your own learning. It is not necessarily a formal ‘academic’ piece of work. It is a personal record of your own learning. As such it is a document which is unique to you and cannot be ‘right’ or ‘wrong’, although there are ‘better’ and ‘worse’ ways of producing one. A learning log helps you to record, structure, think about and reflect upon, plan, develop and evidence your own learning. In the context of this module your learning needs to meet certain requirements if you are to achieve the assessment evidence criteria for your chosen skill area. What is a learning log? Indeks and Log

Beaver Log

...Beaver teeth are so sharp that Native Americans once used them as knife blades. Beavers eat tree bark and the soft tissue, that lies beneath the bark. Trees they seem especially fond of are willows, maples, poplars, beeches, birches, alders, and aspens. Mr. Kaiser’s beaver log was hallowed out like a cylinder with pointed ends. This log was accidently placed on the bomb fire and burned which caused physical and chemical reactions and changes. Let’s talk about some of the physical and chemical properties. Physical properties can be observed or measured without changing the composition of the matter. The beaver’s log had the following physical properties. It was shaped like a cylinder with pointed ends, brown and rough. The beaver ate the bark and the soft tissue in order to receive nourishment. Chemical properties of matter describe its “potential” to undergo some chemical change or reaction by virtue of its composition. As the beaver log burns, it goes through three phases. The first phase is the evaporation of water. As the wood is heated moisture evaporates quickly consuming heat energy in the process. The second phase is the emission of smoke. As the wood heats up, it starts to smoke. The smoke is the visible result of the destruction of the solid wood as it vaporizes into a cloud of combustible gases. The smoke will burn if the temperature is high enough and oxygen is present. The third and final phase is the charcoal phase. As the fire grows and most...
