Can Money Buy Happiness?

We live in a society of shopaholics. This process of shopping and purchasing things that we want is the major part of any economy and a main factor that is developing society; therefore, many people have become more materialistic and give a lot importance to money and chasing it. They think that money can’t buy happiness, however; it can. Moreover, money plays an important role in our lives because it helps us to value things in our lives and it motivates people to work hard to make money to have the things they desire.

Money helps us to value things in our lives. We human beings are very greedy and we have endless demands. In order to obtain our demands, some amount of money is necessary because it is difficult to be happy when we don’t have access to the necessities. So, once we have gotten our basic demands, these things could make our lives more valuable even if it’s a little bit. For example, when we are stressed out for some reason we just want to take a break or vacation to somewhere with our family where we can relax and enjoy, but it costs a lot of money and there are many people who can’t afford to go to the vacation. However, one of the human necessities is exactly taking a rest. Thus, people must get some rest sometimes, because it will make them happier and give them more energy to live. Otherwise, people will get depressed easily and stressed out often and it becomes a major health problem.

Second of all, money motivates people to work hard to reach their goals. People can be successful with money and being successful is one of the purposes of human life time. Money is the most powerful and important tool which enables us to accomplish our goals. We need this tool every time, just like the human body needs water. For example, education is one of the inseparable parts of being successful, but the problem is that many people do not have the money to go to the school, so it is very hard to be successful when we have no education. That is why people work hard and earn money in order to go to the school for achieving their goals.

To conclude, it is totally true that the more money that we have the happier we are because this is the thing which makes our lives more valuable and happy. Without money we are not able to do anything in society nowadays. Also, it motivates people to work hard to make money to have the things they desire. That’s why people do need money to be happy, but they don’t have to be rich; however, they do need to be able to afford the necessities.

Can Money Buy Happiness?

...Can Money Buy Happiness? Benjamin Franklin stated that “Money has never made man happy, nor will it, there is nothing in its nature to produce happiness”. Unlike the past, nowadays, the world has become more materialistic and the statement that money can buy happiness is trending to be obvious. However, there is still debatable about this question “can money buy happiness?” Some people believe that money is the main key in life to be happy while others think that money can never buy happiness. From my point of view, money can buy happiness depending on the purpose of using money like being able to relieve stress, having more experiences and having more time. To begin with, money can enable people to be free from the stress because they would not have to worry about all their bills that they have to pay things in the past, in the present and in the future. In the article “Stress In America: Paying With Our Health,” people who have lower salaries will be less happy than people who have higher salaries (American Psychological Association, 2015, p.4). For example, people will not have to wait until the due date of credit card payment, if they have adequate income to pay this bill. In contrast, people who do not have enough money, they have to figure out what they suppose to do and this situation would lead to further stress. As a result, being free of this problem can make people feel happier. Furthermore, having money let people gaining more experiences because they are able...

Happiness Store

...Anh Nguyen Professor Wegley ENG 102 18 January 2014 The Happiness Store: A Place to be Happy in Less Mundane Ways Gary Larson has brought laughter to many people by his popular long-running comic called The Far Side. In one of these cartoon series, the character names Crawley was told by his friends: “You cannot buy happiness”. However, “Mr. Crawley surmised that they just didn’t know where the store was” (Figure 1). Humorously, Mr. Crawley’s conclusion about the reason why his friends could never buy happiness may be comical and eccentric, but it conveys Larson’s message about a common and reflective argument in our life as he identifies people’s different aspects of happiness and ways to accomplish it. Is simply painted in black and white with captions at the bottom, the single rectangular panel makes it easier for the readers to recognize Larson’s typical painting style and his message throughout the comic. Looking at the panel, what impresses viewers at the first glance is the “Happiness” store with a remarkable, large signboard on the corner of a crowded street. On the pane of glass, there are several flyers for advertisement such as “Complete your life”. Besides, that store selling happiness is the place which Mr. Crawley’s friends – the characters in the comic did not know. Thus, they were unable to purchase happiness. The hilarious point is that “happiness” is an abstract, ungraspable definition; how come there is a store selling it? Nevertheless...

Fahrenheit 451 Rhetorical Analysis

...Money Has No Meaning Money cannot buy happiness. Happiness is only expressed by the way we feel, not by showing how much we have, that is why it is priceless. Individuals believe money can lead to power, but money cannot bring permanent joy to one’s life. In Fahrenheit 451, it expresses the idea of money not bringing joy. “I,I” Mrs. Phelps cries, “don’t know, don’t know, I just don’t know, oh, oh... - pg. 97.” This excerpt showed that Mrs. Phelps really never felt real emotion, causing her to feel unordinary and surprised of the new emotions. As soon as Montag read Dover Beach to Mrs. Phelps, her brain turned “off” and “on” like a light switch to actually think of how unhappy she really was. While Mildred and the rest of the guests had tv’s and studio rooms, they also had money. Dr. Martin Luther King's 'The Drum Major Instinct'

...world today revolves around one thing: money. Money makes and defines society, however it is debated wether or not that much influence has a positive or negative effect. Money however, is not the key to a happy and prosperous life. People and experiences influence ones life much more than money ever could. Money creates a sense of importance and a constant comparison to everyone around. Although money can bring forth many glamorous things to someone's life, this does not influence the phycological well being of a person, therefore money is not happiness. Money does not directly buy happiness, it simply distracts one from their true source of happiness. In Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s speech, titled “The Drum Major Instinct”, King goes into detail about how when people obtain money, it creates a sense of entitlement and an “I'm better than him” mind set. Money leads to a constant comparison of people to themselves. Even back in the 1950s when the Civil Right movement was stirring in America, people used money as a way to compare themselves to the less fortunate. Money was an object used to wave in another's face to attempt to get a reaction....

Money Cannot Buy Happiness

...Money cannot buy happiness Good morning. Today, I’m going to talk to you about how money cannot buy happiness. Happiness. What is happiness? Is buying a new iPod happiness? Or is buying someone’s love for you called happiness? Actually I’m sure if I ask anyone what it is, there is no definite answer. If a girl wanted a Barbie doll for her birthday but instead her mother gives her a soft toy she says she is unhappy and she doesn’t love her. But how can materialistic goods make us happy or sad and decide someone’s love for us? When did money ever start to buy our happiness? Firstly, money isn’t everything. Some people think their lives, love, death, friends, families; time and health all revolve around money. It is this type of thinking that causes one to work like they own someone a living. It is this type of thinking that causes one to lose their loved ones after he or she gets richer. It is this type of thinking that causes one to regret not cherishing anything and only caring about money. Money manipulates us to think it is our lives but our lives are invaluable. Money may mean something to us, but it is not everything. Secondly, doesn’t mean you have money, you are happy. The world’s happiest people are not in Qatar, the richest country in the world, nor are they in Japan, the nation with high life expectancy. Rather a poll done by more than 150,000 has shown that the happiest people are in Latin America. Even with its poor living conditions, the people are still happier...

Money Cant Buy Happiness

...What Money Can’t Buy. We need it to pay the bills, eat and sleep in our warm homes. Most importantly we need it to survive. Money plays a very important role in everyone’s life across the world. Money can be the most important thing in the world, but many forget that there are many other things that hold value, more than the dollars in your bank account. Still, very astonishing to me how one piece of paper can control the minds of billions of people. How we let it dictate a majority of our life and think that we need it to make us happy. Even though money can buy you all the lavish goods in the world, but it can never buy you happiness, knowledge, good health, love or time. In my personal experience with money, I’ve had the amount of an average American family. Meaning that I wasn’t filthy rich but I wasn’t poor either. The amount that I have is enough to make me happy because I’m not struggling with anything life food and other necessities. I don’t live comfortably, because my idea of comfortable is not having to work, but I still have to pay bills and maintain. But, looking at others who don’t have much money makes me appreciate my life more even if I am not wealthy. Being average isn’t so bad when you still have gratitude. Money can’t buy you happiness and I actually believe that in some ways money can actually negatively consume your life. What I mean by this is, say for instance someone is desperate for money, they will do anything to get their hands on it. That...

Can Money B Happiness?

...Money is the currency used all around the world for means of exchange. The majority of society seems to agree that money cannot buy happiness; but does it? People that choose to acquire wealthy lifestyles are often seen as self-centered or greedy. Greed is the natural, intense and selfish desire for something that exists in us all. Every single being on earth possesses some type or form of greed. Naturally we condemn others for having this trait, so I decided to pursue a different perspective. Money itself cannot truly buy happiness. If you think about this in a literal form, it makes sense. No one is actually able to “buy”emotions or feelings with an object. Granted money cannot buy happiness, money is able to buy things that supply a feeling of happiness. Money can buy the ability to give to others. A researcher at Harvard University found that giving to others is boosting people emotionally and physically. I can agree this is accurate because when people serve others they become more happy. Typically, a sense of cheerfulness or optimism is felt after helping someone. Think of a time when you helped your grandparents do something they are no longer able to accomplish. That same feeling is felt when money is donated to special organizations we admire. Celebrities like Beyonce, Taylor Swift and Matthew McConaughey have donated millions of their earnings to different charities and organizations across the world. If these celebrities that are worth more than millions of dollars...

Does Money Equal Happiness?

...Does Money Equal Happiness? Many people think money is the key to happiness. Happiness is the state of well-being characterized by emotions ranging from contentment to intense joy, which means happiness is an emotion. An emotion is what you feel.  Emotions can be short lived or long term.  Some emotions, like fear, can come and go.  Long lasting fear usually is undesirable.  Happiness, on the other hand, is an emotion that most people would like to experience over the long term.  People often seek short-term ways to make them feel happy.  But, long-term happiness is a bit more challenging to create.    Money certainly can buy things that can make a person happy...for a while. In today’s world, IPhones, fancy cars, and nice clothes seem to have become a necessity in life. The problem is, soon there is a newer phone or a fancier car.  People can get stuck in a never-ending cycle of trying to buy short-term happiness.  Over a lifespan, purchases meant to provide short-term happiness can result in insufficient money for the necessities of life ultimately resulting in unhappiness.  Money may actually not be necessary in the first place. There are numerous examples where people who have a lot less are happier. If you travel outside of the typical American city you can find that buying happiness with money is not always the case. I got to meet someone who was happy with having less. When my family and me went on a cruise, we had a waiter who was working on his son’s birthday. Not...

Happiness

...110-69 “Happiness” Happiness. When people think about what they want, it often has to do with improving their circumstances. It can be found in many different forms. Being happy can be by getting or buying objects that will better your lifestyle. A lot of people don’t know the opposite of happiness. Pleasure can be a feeling of being happy because of their connection between each other. The more happiness inside the happier you may be. The more you have the more you may be happy. When buying or receiving something’s you feel happy. I believe that money does not buy happiness. Happiness is a feeling we find within ourselves as human beings. I feel that money can make a person happy for that one moment but not for ta lifetime. I believe that everyone should take note in and learn about the importance of money and there happiness within it. If you are rich and wealthy you may think that you have it all but ask yourself, are you really happy with just the money you have in your wallet? Money can buy you a lot of things but it can never buy you happiness. What is the true opposite of happiness? The opposite of happiness is not sadness. Its emptiness. One is surrounding a loss and the other a celebration. I believe that these two experiences are related to one another. The feeling of emptiness is the opposite of true happiness. Happiness and sadness isn’t in any way less than happy. When feeling empty you discover true depression and that can take away your happiness. I believe...

The Relation Between Wealth and Happiness

...THE RELATION BETWEEN WEALTH AND HAPPINESS A1: The articles The Sandra Bullock Trade and But Will It Make You Happier? both dis-cuss the relation between wealth and happiness, and it doesn’t require much to figure out, that these articles agree that happiness doesn’t depend on wealth in general. But as The Sandra Bullock Trade nearly refuses any connection between the two and even states that “if you have an unsuccessful marriage (…) you will remain significantly unfulfilled” (p. 2), But Will It Make You Happier? points out that even though happiness isn’t dependent on income, your buys will influence your mood. The Sandra Bullock Trade acknowledges that poor people are generally unhappier, but the article also claims that as long as your basic needs are fulfilled, money makes no difference. This is probably the biggest disagreement between the articles, as But Will It Make You Happier? is somewhat more capable of differ-entiating the dilemma. Instead of just having a one-tack mind, the article focuses on both the pleasure that money can bring, but it also declares how we are more likely to find joy when we buy social activities than when we buy material objects. A2: The Sandra Bullock Trade catches your attention from the very beginning. My Relationship with Money and Happiness

...If money doesn’t buy happiness, what does? Many people believe that having more money is going to make them happier in life, but does money really provide true happiness? After reading the passage “Yes, Money can buy happiness,” by John Tierney, explains that people are more often to be happier when they spend money on others rather than spend money on themselves. In my opinion many people believe having more money will make their lives happier and free of all worries. In my life money has provided food, clothing, and shelter our basics needs in life but I came to a conclusion where my satisfactory is not enough. I complain that I need more money and that it will solve all the solution to my problems. But in reality money is never going to be enough to buy my happiness in life, because the more we have the more we need and want. For example, I went shopping to the citadel outlets with my family, less than a few hours I spend about four hundred dollars. I looked at other people and I wish I had more money to spend in order to feel enjoyment and more satisfaction. Then, I look into my partner eyes and say to him, I realize with money you can become selfish, destructive and greedy but on the other hand it can help you discover a world you never knew because we all know money can open the doors to many objects in life. Such as, having the opportunity to explore the world, to have all the materials in life. Furthermore, I do agree that buying does bring happiness to everybody...

Paradox of Affleunce

...research on happiness and wealth relates to Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. The term “paradox of affluence” explains the disparity that has developed over the last 40 to 50 years in America between material well-being and psychological well-being (Baumgardener & Crothers, 2009). While the American family is now making more income than ever before, the amount of happiness has not also increased. Leading to ask the question, can money buy happiness? Research on happiness and wealth indicates money does not buy happiness (Baumgardner & Crothers, 2009). The unmet basic needs in life can easily be blamed on lack of wealth and cause depression, stress, anxiety, and unhappiness. Yet if you were to ask anyone what one thing in their lives brings them the most happiness, most would not answer it would be any kind of relation to money or wealth, rather it would be love, family, or health (Baumgardner & Crothers, 2009). When we consider how happiness and wealth relates to Maslow’s hierarchy of needs the lack of wealth can lead to unhappiness when basic needs are not met. One could also wonder if happiness is achieved when all levels of Maslow’s hierarchy are met. One could also wonder if complete happiness can be achieved if just basic needs are met. For most people I believe happiness can be achieved when basic needs are met and they are not wealthy. These people value money for taking care of their basic needs; while they may not be wealthy, they appreciate things money cannot...

The Great Gatsby Quotes About Money And Happiness

...Can Money Affect Your Happiness? “It is good to have money and the things that money can buy, but it's good too, to check up once in a while and make sure you haven't lost the things money can't buy” a quote by George Horace Lorimer. This quote is trying to say that money can gain material items like clothes, a car, and a house. These are great because they are items that are wanted and maybe need to survive. However, make sure you still keep the stuff that money cannot buy, such as love and happiness. Fitzgerald is saying that money cannot buy all that is wanted. He shows this throughout the novel, The Great Gatsby. He explains this by saying money can provide material items, but cannot provide immaterial items. He also states that money cannot make you happy all the time. The...

The Correlation Between Money And Happiness By Sharon Bogley

...Does money bring us happiness? Sharon Bogley is an author whom writes about science for publications such as The Wall Street Journal and Newsweek. Accordingly to her the correlation between wealth and happiness is very complex. It all depends on the situation that they are in. Bogley believes that once basic needs are met then other stuff such as social relationships and satisfaction at work become more important in life. Bogley provides many examples of different situations in her passage, “Money and Happiness” for instance; economists believe that more money you have, the happier you must be. The question then arises is the economist bias? Since his or her job is revolved around the effect and worth of money, it may influence his views between the relationship of money and happiness. This example is very situational because he or she is obviously going to favor money equals happiness for the reason that without the presence of money his or her job is meaningless....
