Can You Tell What Type of Gamer You Are??? With all the different types of games and ways to play them in the world today, can you pinpoint a specific type of “gamer” you may be? Each one has its own specific uniqueness. For example, do you like to play on a console like the Xbox, PS3, or PC? Maybe you like to act out a fantasy in medieval times in real time, such as; live action role playing or LARPing. Some have a large imagination and like to roll the dice to determine their fate in table top games like Dungeons and Dragons or D&D. These gamers are known as Virtual Gamers, LARPers, and Tabletop Gamers. . Virtual Gamers like to play video games, whether it is on a console like the Xbox 360 or on a PC. These people control the game with a controller or keypad and it is the most modern way of gamming. It provides visual graphics in HI-DEF and awesome quality sound. You can play with or against people all across the world and never have to leave the comfort of your room or living room. Virtual Gamers depend on electronic devices to set them in their alternate reality, such as a TV and a device to play the game from. There are many different types of video games out these days and can range from SYFY to horror and fantasy to action and adventure to sports and education. Video Gamers have been sought to be mindless drones by people but in fact, studies have shown that people that play video games are known to have excellent hand-eye coordination, split second decision making, and more likely to think clearly under pressure. Live Action Role Playing, or LARPing, is interesting as well because you literally act out your character in a fantasy realm that you and your friends plan or make up as you go. Most LARPers like to set their story in medieval times or in the renaissance era. They are not usually professional actors, and enjoy escaping reality through a live action story. Some like to LARP because they are around people that can except them and not have to worry about being made fun of by others. Another form of LARPing is called COS-Play or costume play. This is played by putting on a costume and acting out a specific character. The difference between LARPing and Cos-Play is LARPERS plan out their stories and plots then act them out accordingly. Cos-Players pretty much put on a costume of a famous person, or comic book/ manga character, and act them out as if they were that person. Also with LARPing, if you have weapons you need to be able to hit the person with it and that is why LARPers make them out of “LARP safe foam.” Cos-Players weapons, if any, are just props and are usually made from cardboard, wood, or foam. Whether it is Cos-Play or LARPing the bottom line is having fun not being yourself and escaping the everyday stress that life throws at you. Lastly, we have the table top gamers that enjoy rolling the dice in a game called Dungeons and Dragons or the draw of cards in a game called Magic the Gathering. D&D is a game that depends on how well you can roll the dice to see if you character you created can attack or evade. The dice consist of server types that rage from a three sided die to a twenty sided die. Each one has its own out come upon the roll in the game. The character’s stats and classes are made up from specific books made for D&D. You also roll the die to see how well your characters base score or attributes can be. The game is usually played with little figurines and acted out using your imagination. There is a main story teller called the Dungeon Master and the characters range from three or more players. The Dungeon Master is the one that sets the tone for game play. Every player then acts out their character according to the story and his or her class. Table Top Gamming is similar to LARPing in a way but you’re just playing out the story around a table. With Magic the Gathering; players have a deck of cards that coordinate spells and actions with the flip of a card. The game is determined on how powerful your deck is or how well you play your hand. With D&D the game is determined on the story the DM sets forth. With both if you have some knowledge of strategy and an imagination; you could find yourself having the time of your life. So are you a Virtual Gamer, LARPer, or Table Top Gamer? Personally, I am a Table Top Gamer and I also like to play video games on my PC. I highly enjoy playing D&D with my fiancé and friends. Also, I enjoy RTS (real time stately) games on my PC. Most people that are LARPers/Cos-Players are game developers, computer programmers, Nerds/Geeks, Scientists, etc. The same can be known for Table Top gamers. Virtual Gamers, in my opinion, lack creativity or imagination because they rely on graphics on a screen. No matter what classification of gamer you may be, remember to have fun with it. It’s a chance for you to be anyone or anything you want to be and relieve stress. Bottom line no matter what kind of gamer you maybe, we are all Nerds and some of us do it for a living. Don’t let anyone make you feel any lesser than you because of your game style.

Developing this attitude is not a personal choice alone, it requires the participation of society (parents, school, and game developer and government)." As a computer game user, player and fan, it has led me to study the effects of playing computer games such as DOTA, KHAN, and other highly innovative and competitively graphical games. The purpose of the study was to establish an understanding of to what extent is the effect of playing online games, network games and other types to the studies of the students in the university where I graduated. While it was difficult to set a parameter of classifying games according to types and quality since I and my friend believed that the characteristics of the games have something to do with the addiction of students to playing, we thought that it would be safe to just assume games as if have the same characteristics even though these games are under of different types and of the different level of complex graphical presentation, level of real-time experiences, the plot of story it is trying to project and a lot more qualities. Thus, if we quantify the effects then assumption holds that each game that we have studied has a relatively the same impact to students considering its character/quality. However, the extent of its impact is relatively different when we talk about the degree of variation to students experiences towards gaming. This shows therefore...

...Emergence of Lingua Gioco (Gamers’ Language) Enrichment or distorter of the vocabulary? Paul M. Feliciano BSE-English Rizal Technological University Boni Ave., Mandaluyong City Rationale: Different games have emerged throughout the years that captured the attention of many youth. Some perceived this as a hindrance for a good study habit and a disruption to the focus of the students involved to their scholastic activities. The researcher however, has noticed a positive effect of his that with the emergence of these I serves as cradle for language progress, that this is the epitome of the idea that language is continuously progressing and improving. As gaming has evolved over the years, gamers have come up with all kinds of different terminology to refer to different aspects of video games. Not known by the general public and may call it as gamers’ language. Often times these gamers spill terms they learned online or just simply playing through their favorite game and when they use it, they are not understood by the one whom they talk to Languages that are being used in these games are actual English words but has different meaning. Gamers devised these words to create a special kind of an in-game communication. Aside from this, these formulated languages add up to the repertoire of language of the gamers, making it useful rather than an impediment to learning. But as they say, too much positive is also bad, the use of these languages became frequent and uncontrollable...

How Video Games Are Beneficial

...Good, Better, Video Games Dakota Boyd ITT Technical Institute Over the past twenty years or so there has been much controversy regarding whether video games are good or bad for children and adults. I believe that video games have many physical and mental factors about them that are beneficial. This can range from helping with cataracts to even helping with depression. Video games are a tool that has not yet been utilized to its full potential and not just for entertainment. A Professor named Daphe Bavelier who works at the University of Rochester studies brain and cognitive sciences. She conducts studies on young people who play action video games. Bavelier says, “It turns out that action video games are far from mindless.” Her studies show that video gamers who played action video games showed improved skills in vision, attention, and certain aspects in regards to cognition (Trudeau 2010). German researchers conducted an experiment to help better understand how video games affect the brain. They asked 23 adults around the age of 25 to play “Super Mario 64” for 30 minutes a day over a period of two months. They then had a separate control group which did not play video games at all. Then they examined the brains of the two groups using an MRI machine, which resulted in them finding that the group who played the video game had a rise in gray matter in the right hippocampus, right prefrontal cortex and cerebellum. These areas of the brain are responsible for spatial navigation...

First Person World

...about 70% of the world plays video games, and thousands of people are playing as you read this. Video games can do many great things, like help people grow their imaginations, provide critical thinking skills, create team players and hone social skills, and it has even been said to help medical surgeons improve hand-eye-coordination, helping them to cause 37% less errors while performing surgeries. But along with its acknowledgement, it has its discredit. People are now proclaiming after the previous shootings over the years that video games cause the gamers to become violent, due to the fact that some of these “shooters” were video gamers themselves. But is it truly the video games that make people violent. Since 1958 with the invention of the first video game, “Tennis for Two” sociologists have been studying how video games effect human interactions over time. One Benedict Carey stated that, “The issue is especially relevant today, because the games are more realistic and bloodier than ever...” What he means by this is that as we progress into the future we learn to advance and better ideas and other items. And with the current market, video games holding the use of violence, drugs, nudity, and action are at a high. So in order to have a higher income companies such as Treyarch, Nintendo, and Sony try to make the best and most realistic type of games that the public wants. In This case being the type that gets the players’ adrenalin pumping, leading to more realistic, and bloodier...

Pre-school children who played interactive games such as the ones available on Wii have been shown to have improved motor skills, for example they can kick, catch and throw a ball better that children who don’t play video games. A study of surgeons who do microsurgery in Boston found that those who played video games were twenty-seven percent faster and made thirty-seven percent fewer errors than those who didn’t. Vision is also improved, particularly telling the difference between shades of grey. This is useful for driving at night, piloting a plane or reading x-rays. The Basics of Computer Hardware

...mandatory for computer performance this paper will also cover optional pieces of hardware that can improve quality and speed of the computer. These can include graphics processing units (GPU) and additional RAM. All parts of the computer can be upgraded but one must take into consideration the size and airflow capabilities of the computer case to be sure that all upgrades will fit without getting too hot or crowded. If the case were to get too hot the CPU could overheat and shut down the computer. Due to this possible situation this paper will go over the special precautions that must be made to accommodate the size and heat generation of upgraded hardware. The Basics of Computer Hardware Building a computer is similar to building a house, first you build the foundation then everything gets built on top of it. Instead of building on concrete, the foundation for a computer is the case and the motherboard. The case is equivalent to the walls and ceiling of the house, once you have those you can put any other amenities into the house as needed. Computer cases come in many different sizes and colors and one must be chosen to fit the needs of all the other hardware. According to Chambers (2008) “You can choose from three standard types of cases: pizza‐ and shoe‐box, desktop, and tower” (Chapter 3, para. 6). For a computer that is going to be used primarily for word processing and office type applications a smaller, mid-tower or pizza-box...

Harmful Video Games

...Video games are a form of entertainment created around late 1960s and beginning of 1970s. The effects of violence in video games on negative behavior has been widely studied and debated. In the United States, Europe, and Japan, there are more than 130,000 gamers from elementary school to college. (Jayson 1) This controversial topic has become a serious issue after numerous senseless shootings occurred and particularly after the Sandy Hook Elementary School Shooting. It was discovered that Adam Lanza, the shooter in Newtown, Connecticut, played violent video games such as “Call of Duty.” (Guarino 2) This video game takes place in World War II where the player has to kill anyone on the opposing side. Some people believe violent video games are morally wrong and inappropriate for children. These types of video games teach children that it is perfectly acceptable to harm another person in order to advance to the next level. They don’t learn any consequences to their actions because they can reset the game at any time. The rating system for video games has many flaws as well. This shows that there is no control over the restrictions on violent video games. Others argue that kids find video games enjoyable and such activities bring them closer to their peers. Children that usually play video games are more outgoing and make friends much easier. Violence is also extensively used in children’s literature. Kids have already been exposed to violence and eventually will in the future. They...
