I have been dying to share my story about my amazing daughter and son for some time now, it's always on my mind but I never have been able to tell it to many people because of time. So here is FINALLY my chance to do so!

My daughter MacKenzie Joy Lusk was born to me and my hubby on 7/7/7 in Paradise, California. With a full head of dark hair that never fell out. Everyone told me that she was lucky, well, those numbers are amazing, I have to say. Shortly after that we moved to Oregon, she was a normal kid that was very happy, and it was fun being a stay at home mom enjoying her. Around ten months my daughter started acting strange, crying more, not eating as much, lying around not wanting to really socialize. We just thought she was teething or growing or something else. One day we were at a family member’s house (who raised 3 girls) and our daughter's anus started bleeding, but thankfully stopped. We asked our family member if that ever happened to her with her three girls, but she just looked at us and shook her head.

One week my husband, (who at the time worked with a school) went away to camp with his class and I just started Esthetician school, so it was hard for the first time to give my baby up to her babysitter. This sitter though, was a personal friend and an amazing mother herself so it wasn't as hard as it could be. I went home from school to pick up my daughter and the sitter told me how she was worried because of the lack of moving, eating, etc. that was going on with Mackenzie. Also she had a horrible diaper rash that would not go away. I told her that she is just probably teething or missing mommy or something because I didn't want to be dramatic or overreact to the situation. Well, this continued, so I decided to take Mackenzie in to the doctor after a day more of it, even though her check up wasn't that long ago. The doctor was checking her out when I told him all the things he needed to know. I also mentioned to him that we weren't neglecting her, but we just haven't been able to kick this diaper rash no matter how much cream or how many dozens of diapers we went through. He eyed me oddly after I said that and then left, after a while he came back and told me he is going to contact CPS after looking at MacKenzie situation. I cried, thinking "God, why now when my hubby is gone and I just started school... I am not this strong." I looked at the doctor and said "Alright that is fine, I am hurt you think I am that kind of mother but I understand you want to protect her." I cried all the way home praying, looking at my motionless daughter... When I got home the doctor had called and said that he was going to wait to call CPS after consulting another doctor and wanted to see Mackenzie again soon.

My hubby got home later that day... I cried on him...went back to school and got a call from my Husband saying MacKenzie's butt cheek and swollen up and he was taking her back to the doctor. That night we went to the Hospital, got a cat scan and were informed that she had a tumor and we were being sent to Doernbecher Children's Hospital in Portland. I also found out that night from my husband that he was let go from his teaching position... no job, and a dying child. After losing it completely in the hospital room, so much that they told me to calm down because I was scaring Mackenzie...I thought my life had just ended... I was 23 years old... I felt and still feel over 50. I can't explain the feeling when they told me that she had a tumor... Everything goes dim and slow I just remember thinking, this is something that happens to people in Readers Digest, or that drinks or smokes when they're pregnant. Not me, I didn't even go near microwaves out of paranoia... You also experience shortness of breath and complete panic; nothing makes sense except to freak and to let it out. It seemed like the more you freak out the quicker you'll wake up... it's strange.

We rushed that night to Portland, The doctors at Doernbecher were amazing, they diagnosed, treated and loved on Mackenzie. The nurses there were simply amazing, they have touched our lives forever and we will never forget their kindness. They made MacKenzie laugh and even danced for her. We had volunteers that would come in and sing, play instruments and entertain Mackenzie. There is also an organization that is called the candle lighters that paid for us to have new tires so we could travel safely 6 hours to and from Portland, and also offered to pay our rent if we couldn’t. There is a condition during Chemo that kills your immune system, after receiving her first round we were sent home till her next one was due. We were a little stressed because we left our house in a rush so we didn’t have time to clean. My family that I mentioned earlier that live 20 min a way in a small town called Bonanza came out and scrubbed ceiling to floor our house. Needless to say when we came home everything was flawless and all stuffed animals were out in the garage. A little bit of peace was there during the mad chaos. My Husband and I were so thankful (in a very strange way) that he lost his job when he did. I was able, (Also MacKenzie) to have the support of my husband during this whole period. My husband is such an amazing man, we had to administer shots to MacKenzie’s thighs to boost her immune system and he did it every time for me. I couldn’t emotionally handle shooting our precious baby girl intentionally, even though it was good for her.

We had to shave her head on her 1st birthday, no friends could be around because her immune system was gone, so she ate her cake bald, only with mommy and daddy, and with a PICC line in her arm. (I didn't want to scar her skin with the surgeries involved in a port, I am vain, and figure my daughter would appreciate that later in life.)

My Mother who lives in California took lots of time off to be with us at the hospital, we had visits from my brother Tom and his wife Geneva, Mother in law, Uncles, Aunts, Cousins, dear Friends had all come and show their support and love. *tear* I was able to meet some more parents of children on that floor who had cancer. I felt a weird guilt after doing so, we HAD hope of our daughter living through this, other’s did not. After four rounds of chemotherapy, it was surgery time. My hubby found a job and started working so I was going to have to face this one alone. My Mother and Father were able to drive all the way from California to be with me. Which was an event that has touched my life and I will never forget. So, in to the hands of a surgeon that I didn’t know personally, I placed my daughter, our most valuable gift that has been given to us, and into the arms of my parents and my God I rested and cried and waited.

Hours later I saw MacKenzie, they removed her tumor that was wrapped around her coccyx (tailbone) and removed the tailbone itself. She was skin and bones with no hair but she was cancer free…we got ourselves a beautiful, normal healthy daughter. Found out we were preggo a little bit after the surgery, had a healthy pregnancy and our son MacLaine was born, healthy but not breathing well at all. He was life flighted out of our town to another and spent two weeks in oxygen therapy. A normal thing for children to have is brain damage or blindness from oxygen therapy. MacLaine had neither, and we thank God for our two (Now normal and rambunctious) healthy children. There are so many amazing things that happened during this that I WISH I had time to tell you all *tear* Maybe I should write Readers Digest.. haha :) MacKenzie has AFP tests that she does every six months to make sure nothing else pops up, but other then that nothing but a scar on her bottom. MacLaine has no check-ups or anything medically wrong with him. They are currently 3 and 1 years old and are enjoying torturing each other

Informative Speech On Lupus

...Being told you or a loved on has to go on chemo can be a very scary thing, but what I find scarier than that is Chemotherapeutic treatments are not cures for diseases, they are simply treatments. And yes I used the word diseases and not cancer nor types of cancer. Chemo is used for more than cancer even though it actually cures nothing. One of the most well known diseases that chemo is used to treat (aside from cancers) is an autoimmune disease called lupus. Chemo being used to treat Lupus is better know due to Selena Gomez being diagnosed with Lupus an Autoimmune disease, though some people think Lupus is a try of cancer due to the chemo( it’s not) but I digress. Chemo may not always be what is best for someone who has been given the option...

...Women with Breast Cancer According to singer and songwriter Sheryl Crow, “People go through challenging moments of losing people and of having their life threatened from illness and real grief. But they get through it. And that’s the testament to the human spirit and it’s – we are fragile, but we also are divine.” The love and support from the people around them can build the women up and give them the strength that they need. When a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer she may start to lose her life and strength, so she tend to look at life as if it is useless. A woman with breast cancer will cause her to feel awful, but through having the support of family and friends, chemo therapy and inspiring thoughts, they can emotionally heal and get through the important exams. It may be hard for her to go through life with this sickness and to think positive about herself, but if she gets the moral and support she needs from family and friends then she wouldn’t look at life as a total lost. According to writer Lance Armstrong, “We have two options, medically and emotionally: give up or fight like hell.” No matter what their situation is, they shouldn’t give up on life without a fight. They have to learn to put up their best fight even if they don’t win at the end. With breast cancer there is no for sure winning in that fight. Having people around that is full of positive inspiration can make their fight a little better even if they do not make it through. Daughters, nieces,...

Dealing with Cancer

...Cancer: Disability Paper Cancer. This single word consisting of six letters can change someone’s life in a heartbeat. Imagine yourself or a loved one sitting in a doctor’s office, awaiting the results to see if cancer is the diagnosis. You’re sitting in silence holding each other’s hand, watching the clock tick slowly before hearing a faint knock on the door. As the doctor walks in, his face says it all and he does not need to say a single word. It’s hard to listen to what he is saying, because all you can think about is, “my life is over,” “this can’t be happening to me,” and “I’m dying”. Those were some of the exact same thoughts my dad was thinking when he was diagnosed with kidney cancer about thirteen years ago. Fortunately for himself and our family, he is now cancer free. At that time of the diagnosis, I was young and did not understand the depth of cancer, and that’s why I decided to write this paper. Cancer doesn’t care about your age, race, or religion, but when it strikes someone you know, it hits home. In the book, “ A World Without Cancer,” Dr. Margaret Cuomo (2012) describes cancer as, “Malignant tumors often look crablike, their irregular extensions resembling crustacean claws” (p.23). What exactly is cancer? There are over 100 different types of cancers such as: breast cancer, leukemia, lymphoma, and kidney cancer, to just name a few. According to the American Cancer Society (2014),” although there are many kinds of cancer, all cancers start because...

Argumentative Essay On Chemotherapy

...Chemotherapy is a term used to describe the therapeutic intervention of disease with drugs. It is a common term used in cancer treatment circles. With the incidences of cancer disease on the rise, doctors have embraced chemotherapy as a modern technology to control body cells that turn cancerous and multiply at an uncontrollable rate (Epstein & Samuel, 26). The chemotherapy treatment process is one that has balanced positive and negative implications on the patient's quality of life. Besides the process offering a second chance to patients who are almost giving up on the cancer disease, it has equally many side effects that often turn unbearable to the soft-hearted. More than one hundred drugs are available and can be used singly or in combinations to eradicate any remaining cancer cells after a radiological or surgical treatment of the same (Greenwald & Edward, 9). The mention of chemotherapy shifts our thinking to cancer matters. Cancer has...

SSDI Benefits

...Getting SSDI Benefits in Cases of Soft Tissue Sarcomas First, sarcomas are defined as cancers of the body’s bone and soft tissues made up of mesenchymal cells. Sarcomas invade the bone, skeletal and smooth muscle, tendons, ligaments, cartilage, blood vessels, nerves, connective tissue around joints, and fatty tissues. They are rare. While alternative treatments such as curcurmin and high doses of D-3 do inhibit cancer growth, surgery is typically seen as the cure to get rid of sarcoma. Stage I sarcomas, the small ones, surgery takes care of. Radiation shrinks cancers in the head, neck, or abdomen for removal. Stage II and III sarcomas are the ones that spread rapidly. Chemo and radiation can shrink tumors making them easier to cut out. Sometimes lymph nodes must be removed, too, to get all the cancer. A stage IV sarcoma is rarely cured....

The first part of the essay the author presents a piece of an interview conducted with a young cancer patient who was going against the grain and refusing treatment. The essay then goes into a personal narrative on how the author feels about cancer then from there goes into a great descriptive paragraph about cancer and carcinogens. Her thesis is clearly surrounding the argument whether or not holistic or medical treatments such as surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy are ideal in treating/curing cancer. She explains that there are some cancer patients who swear by holistic remedies, but there are also patients who would rather go through...

Treatment as Seen by Main Characters

...Treatment as Viewed by Main Characters Cancer is the tuberculosis of our generation. Movies, books, poems, and music industries are consumed by this epidemic. The illness can affect anyone at any time due to its roots in DNA mutations. The mutations in DNA code for mutated proteins and therefore alter the use and lifespan of each cell and tissue type. Cancer at its simplest form is shown as an excess of cells dividing out of control. Cancer comes in all forms and ways. The most common cancer types include: breast, ovarian, skin, lung, and colon. The main character in The Fault in Our Stars has thyroid cancer which has metastasized in the lungs (Green 11). Levine’s Adam in the movie 50/50 has a lesser known cancer, spinal cancer. Even though each cancer is different, they are treated in relatively the same ways. Cancer requires extensive treatment. Different types of cancer require different types of treatment. Chemo-therapy is almost required to treat the physical problems. However, various supportive therapies and groups treat the emotional problems associated with cancer. Some of these include: depression, apathy, anxiety, confusion, and anger. Both The Fault in Our Stars and 50/50 concern not only the physical treatments cancer patients undergo, but also the emotional treatments associated with a cancer diagnosis. John Green’s Hazel is a teenager living with terminal cancer. She calls her life a “miracle” due to the fact she was revived on the cusp of death (Green...

Alternate Methods for Cancer Treatment

...Alternative Methods for Cancer Treatment Kevin Moore COM/172 April 16, 2012 Darrell Haley Alternative Methods for Cancer Treatment If someone you know is being treated for cancer, you may want to learn more about what they are going through. Surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation are the main types of cancer treatment. However there are alternative methods for cancer treatment. Surgery is often the first treatment option if the tumor can be taken out of the body. Sometimes only part of the tumor can be removed. Radiation, chemotherapy, or both might be used to shrink the tumor before or after surgery. Doctors use chemotherapy to kill cancer cells. The term chemotherapy (often shortened to "chemo") refers to the use of drugs to kill cancer cells. Usually, the drugs are given intravenously (into a vein, IV) or taken by mouth. Chemo drugs then travel through the body in the bloodstream, reaching cancer cells that may have spread (metastasized) from the tumor to other places in the body. Radiation therapy uses high energy rays (such as x-rays) to kill cancer cells or shrink tumors. The radiation may come from outside the body (external radiation) or from radioactive materials put right into the tumor (internal or implant radiation). Getting external radiation is much like getting an x-ray. The radiation itself is painless, but tissue damage may cause side effects. Other, newer kinds of treatment you might hear about...

Morrison Even The Eyebrows Case Study

...Even the Eyebrows? Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in the UK, with over 40,000 cases being diagnosed annually; death rates however have fallen by 21% over the past 10 years. In 2004; mum of three Sharon Morrison became ‘one of those cancer statistics’. She sat nervously in the local doctors surgery, her face as pale as the walls surrounding her, with the scariest of thoughts flying around her head as she awaited those three dreaded words. “You have cancer.” I had played football with her son Richard for years and Sharon, like many mums and dads, spent many a weekend shivering at the edge of a muddy football field in the freezing cold cheering on her son’s team. Sharon had written a book about her experiences, ‘ Even the Eyebrows?” I recently caught up with her to share her story, a journey...

Chemotherapy

...The reality of "chemo brain" has been established by researchers who have discovered clear evidence that patients develop cognitive issues after undergoing chemotherapy. The new studies reveal that chemotherapy can lead to problems with focus and recall with a sense of "brain fog" being described by many participants. There have been many theories of negative effects on the brain caused by chemotherapy, but this study is the first to describe the scientific mechanisms that may explain how it occurs. Although many patients and healthcare workers use the terms "chemo brain" or "chemo fog," many doctors describe the condition as mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or cognitive dysfunction. Most people who are experiencing the condition regardless of what it is called are able to do everyday things. But there seems to be a noticeable decrease in ability to perform as well as before they underwent chemotherapy. Symptoms can include memory loss or reduction in recall, hard time finding the right word for an object, trouble staying focused or on task, struggles with wandering thoughts, challenges with multi-tasking, difficulty with simple mental math, fatigue, difficulty keeping up with a conversation, confusion and/or brain fog. Research suggests that people who have mild cognitive impairment are also more likely to have depression, anxiety and fatigue. The statistics are not yet well established as to how many people have mild cognitive impairment after cancer treatment. One review...

Living with Cancer

...Living with Cancer Living with Cancer “Cancer does not discriminate against race, sex or age; there are many types of cancer and there are not always available treatments.” “Nothing in life is to be feared. It is only to be understood” –Marie Curie. Every year people are affected by cancer. Living with cancer is hard on all involved with any person that has cancer. They will need all the support they can get even if it’s just a phone call to say hi. Don’t feel sorry or pity the person. Instead do things that can cheer them up asking how they’re doing and ask if you can do anything for them. Many find going to support groups helpful to accept the fact they have or lost someone to cancer. The awareness does show favoritism toward to certain cancers rather than all. It covers the ones with higher rates and more known killers. Doing your own research helps in many ways; if there are areas you don’t understand you can look to see if you can understand better before you ask your doctor questions. Doing research on different stages and about the cancer itself makes it easier to understand what you’re going or will be going through. Whenever you get a chance always ask your doctor questions. If you are the family, you also may find the need to ask the doctor question to put your own mind at ease. Become aware of all of treatments that may interest you than ask your doctor if that treatment could be better. Just because you went through something like a loved one or friend...

Castleman Disease Report

............................................................... 4 INDEX OF FIGURES Figure 1: Irregular Overgrowth of Cells of the Lymph System...................................................... 1 IA#2 BIG DATA AND DATA ANALYTICS 2. Castleman Disease A lot of people are unaware of or just never heard of Castleman Disease. Castleman disease (CD) is a very rare illness of the lymph nodes and related tissues. In the medical community, it is also known as "Castleman's disease, giant lymph node hyperplasia", or "agio follicular lymph node hyperplasia" (AFH). The condition was first discovered, described, and eventually named after Dr. Benjamin Castleman in the 1950s (Castleman, 2016). CD is not cancer although it is sometimes thought of as such. In contrast to cancer, it is considered a "lymphoproliferative disorder" which means there is an irregular overgrowth of cells of the lymph system that is comparable in many ways to lymphomas...
