Career Research Paper: My Two Career Choices in the Medical Field
Choosing a career path is a major life changing decision, some of us know from the time we are old enough to read and write what we are destined to become. Some of us learn along the way from life experiences and others around us what path we will choose to take, some of us have our future predetermined for us such as being born in a family with a long history of lawyers or being prepared from a young age to take of the family business. In addition, there are those of us who go to school for years and take class after class waiting for an epiphany or some type of inspiration to point out the right direction towards one certain career path. I however, knew from a young age that …show more content…
Today I will be talking about two careers in the medical field that are very important to me, they are as follows: Registered Nurse and Certified Nurse Anesthetist.
In order for a person to become an RN, you must first graduate high school with either a high school diploma or a GED. This is the first step to becoming an RN. The prerequisites will vary based the program and degree you decide upon. To get a prompt start in the necessary training for an RN degree, it is best to take as many Science, Math, English and Foreign Language classes as possible while still in high school. By taking this step the advancement in to college will be much smoother and the additional skills will help immensely with the progression of nursing studies. Once high school has been completed, the second step is to move on to a state-accredited nursing school. There are three different degrees obtainable in RN programs such as an Associate of Science Degree in Nursing (ASN), a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing (BSN), and a Master of Science Degree in Nursing (MSN). Each degree varies in the amount of time required …show more content…
It will take me approximately two years to complete the prerequisites for the Associate of Science Degree in Nursing Program and then the actual program will take two years to reach completion. Therefore, overall it will take me around four years to complete the education required for an RN degree. Two skills that I will need in order to be successful in this career are effective communication and critical thinking. Kristina Ericksen a writer for Rasmussen College stated that, “As a nurse, you’re the front line of care. You’ll often find yourself the middleman, relaying critical information from a physician to a patient.” I could not have said it better myself, as an RN an important part of your responsibilities is effective communication among fellow nurses and doctors, worried or uncooperative patients, and concerned families. Solid communication skills will be essential for dialogue with patients and their families so they can fully understand their diagnosis, medications and any other medical concerns. Critical thinking skills are crucial because nurses must be able to assess situations and make prompt and vital decisions. As Kristina Ericksen further stated, “In nursing, there are often multiple options for treatment, which means critical thinking is essential for analyzing the situation and determining the best solution. Nurses must also be able to quickly and confidently find

...Nicholas G Smith Professor Mosely Psychology 1300 1 April 2013 Career Road Map “Research by Penn State and other institutions has shown that up to 80 percent of students entering college admit that they're not certain what they really want to major in, even if they've initially declared a major. In addition, up to 50 percent of college students change their majors at least once before graduation, and some change several times” (Penn state). This is a staggering number of undecided individuals who are currently in college; I am not one of them. There is an overwhelming amount of resources available to the current college student, especially to the students attending San Jacinto College which allows little room for oversight and under achieving. One of the many resources available to students is the FOCUS career 2 online career and personality assessment tool. This allows individuals to answer a number of specific questions in order to narrow or even pin point a career field. Even for someone like me who has already done numerous assessments for the military this proved to be a useful tool to re assert my decision to pursue a degree in the field of environmental science and engineering. This field allows me to pursue a career that requires me to employ many levels of diagnostic and troubleshooting skills while working outdoors. According to the assessment I am highly rated as a realistic personality and my second trait is a balance between enterprising and investigative...

Nursing Career Research Paper

...Nursing is one of my most versatile career options, as it offers a variety of environments to work in, countless specialties to choose from, and many opportunities for career advancement. My ultimate future goal is to become a nurse practitioner in dermatology. To achieve this, I plan to first obtain my doctorate degree as a family nurse practitioner, then move into the dermatology specialty. As Currie, Chiarella, and Buckley explain, nurse practitioners are registered nurses who have been trained to “perform at an advanced level of assessment and clinical decision-making” (2013). Continuing my education in nursing is important to me, as it yields an array of new opportunities and greater responsibilities. Nurse practitioners differ from registered nurses in that they are able to prescribe medication, provide orders, and refer patients to other healthcare professionals (Currie, Chiarella, & Buckley, 2013). While registered nurses are typically employed in hospital settings, nurse practitioners...

Beyond the standard quest for the American Dream ingrained in me by my parents, being the child of immigrants has forced me to be extremely independent, especially when making academic decisions. In a lot of ways, my parents can’t give me all the advice American parents can give as to what steps are right for me when I explore career paths or college choices, so that leaves the burden of research and exploration really heavy on my shoulders. Further, in large part due to their extremely high standards and expectations, I’ve been driven to push myself and challenge myself every single day. I really have become very goal-driven...

I’m more like the later type of person especially when it comes making big life decisions. Not surprisingly it has taken me many years to finally decide that I want to be a nurse. It took a lot of thought and prayer to finally come to this conclusion. I initially had the idea that I wanted to pursue a career in the nursing field when I was in high school. My mother had gotten sick and almost died when I was a junior. We were in and out of the hospital for several months. During that time what I remember the most is the kindness and compassion that was given to my mother by the nurses at the emergency room. Their example during that trying time made me want to become a nurse....
