“Career vs Job Security”

Is J.D concerned more with job security or career security? Discuss.

I think J.D is more concerned about building a career security than job security. In today’s world, being agile is the smartest move, as the economy and industries are in constant flux. People talk about the importance of job security, but that is meaningless. There are plenty of jobs, if you’re really that good you’ll find another. Career security is far more valuable. And, you achieve career security through building a strong personal brand. Building career security, not job security and showcasing your results/expertise its empowering. You will connect with other like-minded, passionate people and help each other with projects, help each other spread ideas and make change in our world. It’s the difference between being average and being remarkable.

Do you agree with J. D’s statement that: “Your knowledge is your portfolio within your current workplace or within the industry?” Discuss.

I do agree with this statement because your knowledge about your job/management is an ongoing process, you have to be a proactive person of what you do and know so you can take charge of your position and build more skills and industry knowledge to yourself. You have to research your industry so you know what it is happening at the moment so you can be able to make informed decisions. Look for trends, so you can start training yourself in those areas. Knowledge is power;having the right skills at the right time ensures that no matter what is happening around you, you will be needed and employable.

Leadership Philosophy: Victoria’s Secret

...Leadership Philosophy: Victoria’s Secret Victoria’s Secret (VS) is an American retailer of women’s wear from lingerie to beauty products. I chose this company for many reasons, one being that I purchase items from this company on a frequent occasion, and the others because they are just a brilliant corporation. Victoria’s Secret was started out in San Fransisco, 1977 by a man named Roy Raymond, who felt embarrassed trying to purchase lingerie for his wife in a department store environment. The store was meant to create a comfortable setting for men. In 1982, after five years of operation, Roy Raymond sold the Victoria’s Secret company , with its six stores grossing six million per year to , Leslie Wexner, creator of The Limited, for four million. Victoria’s Secret started to rapidly expand into malls throughout the U.S. By 1990, it became the largest American lingerie retailer topping one billion dollars. By 1995, Victoria’s Secret began to market their company by holding a lavish event called the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, which broadcasted on pimetime television for America to watch. On July 2007, Limited Brands sold 75% of their chain to Sun Capital Partners to boost up VS stores and Bath and Body Works units, which provided 72% of revenue in 2006 and almost all the firm’s profit. With such a widespread operation, there is an obvious need for employees to help the company achieve goals. Victoria’s Secret careers not only focus on helping the company earn profits but also...

Through education I will be able to change my life and only accept what’s best for me and my family when making career decisions. Having some mentors in my life has taught me about living life to the fullest - about love, laughter, working hard through self-motivation and having the drive to be successful. A college education is important to having a self-sustainable and fulfilling life. “Education is our passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to the people who prepare for it today.” ― Malcolm X. Earning a college education is a clear-cut investment in a long-term sustainable future. At present, college education is a minimum requirement for securing a job in various companies and industries. It provides an overall competitive edge in the workplace. John G. Ramsay, a professor at the Perlman Center for Learning and Teaching, said that the credentials you gain with a college education "are about setting yourself apart, being employable and becoming a legitimate candidate for a job with a future. They are about climbing out of the dead-end job market, and achieving one of life's most difficult developmental tasks: independence from one's parents. Strong credentials trigger that magical set of middle class 'firsts.' “(http://www.quintcareers.com/college_education_value.html) A degree from a four-year college is worth...
