...Goals for my Academic Career One of my goals for my future is to be happy as a Medical Administrative Assistant. As a Medical Administrative Assistant my future job will consist of answering telephones, greeting patients, updating and filing patients’ medical records, filling out insurance forms, handling correspondence, scheduling appointments, arranging for hospital admission and laboratory services, and handling billing and bookkeeping. I want to be satisfied with my decision, to be able to accept my decisions and forgive myself for some mistakes that I‘ve might have made such as not going to college after graduating high school. Most of all, to be able to live up to the expectations I have for myself. I realize I cannot set my goals and dreams based on others and I need to achieve things for myself. I will accomplish my goals when I am able to live my life for myself and still able to provide love and support to others. Another goal of mine is to be a role model for my nephew, younger cousins andto all younger kids to never give up and always believe in yourself that you can succeed. Someday, I will reach my destination in life, when I earn my Associates degree as a Medical Administrative Assistant. One thing helping me focus on my goal is that I will be the first in my family to receive a degree in college. To achieve my goal, I plan to put all my effort in my schoolwork, and manage my time between school and work to receive better grades. I choose Medical......

...As we continue our year-long celebration of the 20-year anniversary of PARW/CC, I would like to heighten the awareness of the accomplishments of some of our members. This month I introduce Eileen Laskar of Intellect Consulting Ltd, based in Nairobi, Kenya. A Pioneer Eileen is a rather pioneering woman, as she is the first Certified Professional Career Coach (CPCC) and the first Certified Professional Résumé Writer (CPRW) to open a career coaching practice in Kenya. Her business partner holds the Certified Employment Interview Professional (CPRW) Credential making the team at Intellect Career Centre quite comprehensive. Eileen is setting the stage, positioning herself as career coaching specialist in the Eastern Africa, professionalizing the whole career development landscape in the region which so far has been characterized by emergence of recruiting firms. She reckons that the later are easy to start, operate and make quick returns; career coaching is more complex to start, requires long-term commitment, accountability and also rigorous credentialing, meaning not everyone can become a coach. Eileen is introducing the "concept" of executive career coaching, providing a broad menu of unique services including coaching for excellence, executive résumé writing, coaching for interviews, job search strategies and working with organizations to adopt career coaching as a best practice in organizational development (OD) As social-economist, Eileen has worked in various...

...After I graduate from high school I want to become a neurosurgeon. I want to get into Brown University and major in Biochemistry. If I am lucky enough, I hope to go to Duke Medical School. Once I have finished Medical School I would like to do my residency in neurosurgery. I plan to achieve this by taking as many science classes as I can in high school as I can, volunteering regularly at the hospital, and doing well on the SAT’s. It has always been my dream to grown up and become a physician. When I was little I would go with my dad to the hospital and wait in the physician’s lounge till his shift was over. As my dad would answer page’s or tell me about his patients, I though to myself, “I want to be just like Daddy when I grow up”. My sister and I like most other children would play doctor when we were little. We would always pretend that one of us had a brain tumor and pretended to remove it. To save people’s lives’ everyday, to find new advances in medicine, just knowing that because of you someone’s life has improved tenfold. I believe that is one of the most rewarding experiences you can ever have. I find the brain to be fascinating; it has so many unknown abilities. I believe that neurosurgery is the perfect career for me, it combines the mysteries of the brain with the preciseness of surgery....

...Building a career plan is difficult, if people have no clue what career field interest them, what is the person strength and weaknesses, and if the person posse the passion for a certain career. Working on my competencies section, I have identified my strengths. If I have to categorize myself with the results, I will say my top three is adapting to change, strategizing, and innovating. To be a high-quality manager or a leader, they must be willing to accept changes. Since, not all work environments are the same. Adjusting to change will make a person realize what works and what does not work. At the same time strategizing and innovative is critical to managers. For a company to raise profit or cut spending, it requires strategizing because without a road map a person may not be able to find the final destination. An innovative person who thinks outside the box usually performs at a higher level. Creative and innovative thinkers stand out in front of their peers and will be successful in their careers. Conducting the exercise, I understand how competencies relate to one another and identify my strength and weakness. If I change my communication techniques to be an effective communicator, I will ensure to disseminate information at the lowest level and use back brief technique. This will mitigate miscommunication among the staff and I will use this technique to check on my staff. I have always been scared to death of public speaking and this class has shown me why I have that fear. Not knowing the information I am speaking about, really knowing the information has caused me problems in the past. Just the fear of being in front of people and having to speak had me so scared, what little I did know I forgot because of fear. I meet new people every day and have to learn to communicate better to help my business grow into what I want it to be. Listening is another area that needs to be addressed. In day to day life we seem to be so busy that we do not have time to listen. I am sitting here at this moment and there is so much noise I can hardly think. I think between cell phones, home phones, computers, television, games, and children, it is very hard to just listen. Years ago there were not as many cell phones, I did not even have a cell phone.
