Literary Review of Carrie by Stephen King

...A Mother’s Influence Stephen King’s novel, Carrie, is the story of a girl who uncovers her unique ability on her path to womanhood and power. Stephen King wrote his story about Carrie three years after he graduated from college. During the 1970s, while King was in college, he was transformed by the idea of Women’s Liberation and how it would influence both males and females. King used interstitial, grotesque, sexual, gender, power, and violent literary elements with components of the European and American gothic genre to create a Supernatural Horror/Drama that reflected on life during the time period. Carrie White was raised by her widowed mother, Margaret White, on Carlin St. in Chamberlain, Maine during the mid 1970s. Throughout Carrie’s childhood, she was the subject of mental and physical abuse. Her mother and late father, Ralph White, were religious zealots who attempted to conceal Carrie from the outside world. Often times, when Carrie acted out, Margaret would inflict physical pain upon herself and sentence Carrie the closet to punish her for her wrongdoings. The abuse did not stop at home. At the age of 17, Carry had her first menstrual cycle in the girls’ shower of her high school Ewan Consolidated High School. After the girls recognized Carrie’s confusion and panic, they began to collectively ridicule her until Mrs. Desjardin, their instructor could come to Carrie’s aid. On the way home from school that day, Carrie discovered her telekinetic ability and the mechanism...

...Positioning and Differentiation with Health Care Organizations Two health care organizations located in the same area are Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and City of Hope Research Hospital, both in Los Angeles. Both facilities cater to and are championed by Hollywood celebrities, so in many respects they are similar. Their positioning and differentiation is distinctive in other respects, however. This paper will examine the positioning and differentiation of both organizations, noting their similarities and differences. Cedars-Sinai can boast that “Many a star has been born, literally” there (“Cedars-Sinai Medical Center,” 2008). Its location, “where Los Angeles meets Beverly Hills and West Hollywood,” ensures that it serves movie stars and other Hollywood celebrities, and this visibility prompts exceptional care (“Cedars-Sinai Medical Center,” 2008). In addition to its star-studded patient list, the hospital is also known for being a teaching and research hospital that has approximately 600 different research programs (“Cedars-Sinai Medical Center,” 2008). Even its Board of Directors boasts such notables as Steven Spielberg and Sherry Lansing, and it enjoys celebrity supporters such as Barbra Streisand, Denzel Washington, Mel Gibson, and others (“Cedars-Sinai Medical Center,” 2008; “Cedars-Sinai Medical Center,” n.d.). Cedars-Sinai’s positioning and differentiation are both related to its celebrity image. It has positioned itself as the hospital to the stars by extending...

How Music Cinnects

...How music connects to time Before I get write about the music I grew up with I wanted to say that this is the best assignment so far. I love music not only listening to it but writing it and singing it as well. Here goes, when I was growing up I listened to a lot of music from the 50’s and 60’s my parents grew up during this time and loved this type of music I enjoyed this type of music and still do. I heard songs from Leslie Gore, Elvis, Dion and the Belmont’s Ray Patterson just to name a few. Sometimes I would cry and sometimes I would be happy depending on what song I was listening to let me explain. When I heard the song Sunshine Lollipops and Rainbows from Leslie Gore I would be happy I thought that if we had sunshine rainbows and lollipops (I love lollipops) then the world would be peaceful and everyone would want to live in it. the song that I always made me cry was tell Laura I love her by Ray Patterson the reason I cried was it was sad it’s a song about how a guy is in love with a girl and all he wants to do is marry her so he decides that the only way to get her a ring is to enter a stock car race well he dies while he is racing and Laura is left alone without the man she loves. I think that if I had to reflect on how these songs helped me through childhood I would have to say that they helped me to understand that life is not about sunshine rainbows and lollipops but about love and death. Carry Nation

...Carry Nation or Carrie Nation was a strong believer in doing what was best for the people of America and would try to help thought otherwise. Nation's past was very influential what she did and why she did it. Nation got married in 1867 to Charles Gloyd, a physician. Gloyd had a drinking problem and was a very heavy drinker. When the couple had a child named Charlien who was born with a condition and Nation blamed the condition on Gloyd's drinking problem. Soon after Carry Nation left Gloyd and became a teacher. Years later in 1877 she remarried to a man named David Nation. David and Carry moved to Texas where she would teach Sunday school. There she mainly spoke out about the evils of drinking, but would also talk about tobacco and women's rights and would known as “Mother Nation”. Nation started to see her life as if she was a profit. She started noticing more things that would lead her to that conclusion as if God was directing her life. “She began to experience visions and a sense of divine protection. The latter seemed to be confirmed when her rooming house was left untouched by a town fire in 1889. She even believed her name, Carry A. Nation, was foreordained.” (Social Issues). Moreover Carry Nation's past was her main influence for starting her ideals and well the main reason for her prohibition reform. Carry A. Nation, believed that drinking was the cause of many problems in American society during the time of the late 1800s. She would try to help those in need no matter...

Just a Dream Carrie Underwood

...11, 2011, is upon us, I felt it would be fitting to discuss a song dedicated to the United States military. The song I chose is by Carrie Underwood, the title is Just a Dream. This song is not only moving for the United States military and their families; I feel that anyone can relate to these lyrics. I think this way because that dreadful day affected all of us as a nation. I love this song because the way she organized the lyrics is incredible; she begins the song with a mood and as the song progresses, the mood takes a dramatic turn. The song begins by starting with a cheerful and happy mood, and when the stage is set the mood changes to dark and depressing. The second line of the song is “all dressed in white, going to the church that night”. By these few words alone, one can clearly tell that she seems to be awaiting the walk down the aisle for her wedding. She explains that she is getting ready for her wedding, and she is marrying her fiancé that is in the United States military. Just a few lines later, it is revealed that she is not going to her wedding; she is going to her fiancé’s funeral. Her fiancé had been killed in combat, and she just can’t believe he is gone. This is where the title “Just a Dream” comes from, she wanted to be his forever and now that is now possible. Even more so than the song itself, the music video for Carrie Underwood’s “Just a Dream” is even more moving. After a brief intro, there is a bride that is actually standing at the end of the aisle...

Controversy in Country Music

...360 (Final Draft) The genre of country music has brought about many controversial issues, like in the example of Carrie Underwood’s catchy tune, cheating and retribution. The bluntness of this enriched genre of music, based on our patriotic roots as Americans, gives off a distasteful and bitter taste to those who don’t see themselves above country- loving or uneducated ‘hicks.’ Critics of country music in the article ‘Acting Naturally: Cultural Distinction and Critiques of Pure Country’ cannot comprehend what is portrayed in this type of music, something of which us ‘hicks’ like to refer to as the ‘simple life’. Country music may be controversial, but it has been able to overcome the stereotypes so that now even those who aren’t living the ‘country life’ can enjoy its passion- filled quality. Country music has always been a very popular form of expression that has been loved by people since its’ beginning in the stereotyped, southern sound form. Also considered to own the fastest growing audience in America, country music has certainly earned its place being the favorite form of music in many people’s hearts. However, just because we as we choose to listen to this music, does not mean “we're all store-bought cowboys and armchair hillbillies.” In fact, classifying a person according to the music they decide to listen to does little to describe the actual person. These people are found in all different types of music; limiting these trend lovers to just country music is...

Song

...The song Temporary Home was featured on Carrie Underwood’s hit album Play On that was released in October of 2009. This song had no impact on me at all until March of 2010. One of my dearest friends, Breanna Nicole Barber, was in a motorcycle dirt bike accident. She fell off of the bike hitting her head causing major brain damage. She was a vegetable and was taken off of life support. Her funeral was several days later and it was really the most unbelievable thing that has ever happened to me. They played Temporary Home at her funeral. I knew what a temporary home meant to me. It meant that one day I’d be at my final destination and that would be heaven. In these next few paragraphs I will reinforce the word ‘temporary’. I’ll describe to you my idea of why Carrie Underwood addresses 3 different stages of life. The word ‘temporary’ is specifically reinforced numerous times throughout the song. Carrie uses phrases like, “house that will never be a home”, “nowhere to go”, “passing through”, and “just a stop”. We have a clear understanding of most of these things and that they intend on being for a short period of time. [What about these words/phrases?] Carrie introduces three different stages of life throughout the song. First she mentions a little boy who is in foster care that keeps getting moved and placed in homes that feel unwelcoming to him. Then she mentions a single mom that needs help, has a baby, and practically has nothing. Lastly she mentions an old...

Attitudes and Influencing Attitudes

...behavior Chapter 11 attitudes and influencing attitudes Attitude is an enduring organization of motivational, emotional, perceptual, and cognitive process with respect to some aspect of our environment. By changing the attitude component, marketers often attempt to influence the consumer behavior in a different significant way. Though it may seem positive, in most cases the marketers are changing the behavior in order to sell their products only. They do so by first changing the consumers’ beliefs. After that they try to shift the importance, as well as add additional beliefs and change the ideal. Olay, a skin care product company, portrays a new facial cleanser in an advertisement. The advertisement portrays the famous singer Carrie Underwood with a reinforcing statement that states, “ it takes a team to make me glam, but just one cleanser to keep my skin clean and fresh.” This may change a consumer’s belief by some sort of expected evidence Underwood’s clear and clean skin. This is also an easier task, since the marketers are targeting young adults reading fashion magazines, and desperate to contain or maintain a certain look. The attitude of the consumers is emerged by the portrayal of the Olay cleanser as the solution to everything, almost as if it works like magic, which may be also adding specific beliefs. The worst part about these advertisements is that these new beliefs that are added or changed may not always be true. In this case, the cleaning product my...

Music Impact

...Morgan Cody Mr. Balistreri English III 03/34/15 Music Impacts Life There are a millions of songs, millions of different singers and bands. Based off of each situation, each mood and each day, we choose music. In my life, since I was brought up around country music. Each song had a deeper meaning and since I was 7 years old it helped me make decisions, finish a paper, calm down and fall asleep. A person’s personality and life is based off of many things, from money to their parents to the activities they are in and those they build relationships with. Along with the major factors that shape each person, we have the tinier ones such as the people in our lives, the school we go to, the area we live in and events that occur throughout peoples’ lives. In the old times, people’s lives were based off work but now it is based off of succeeding in their “dream” and encouraging each other. My entire life I have always been told to find a dream and follow it but during the difficult times, people stop saying it. They don’t say anything, so at a very early age we were all introduced to music, the one thing that calms us mentally and physically. Music has become a part of my everyday life. A few songs that have helped me or I’ve always listened to are: God’s Not Dead; Temporary Home; Miles and States; Courageous; I miss you; There Will be a Day; God’s Great Dance Floor; You’ve Got a Friend in Me. Each one of these songs has impacted who I am, what I do, events in my life and decisions...

Title

...A year after World War 1 had come to an end; women wanting rights were becoming a big movement. The Temperance Movement (the effort to enforce abstinence upon the moderation of the consumption of intoxicating liquors), was also finding its way into act after World War 1. Both of these were major movements. Women used the Temperance Movements to gain a voice in the country. This began the Prohibition Era in the United States of America. After the contribution of women in World War 1, women felt they should have the right to have a voice in their country. Since women had few legal rights, they wanted to build off of being too reliant with their husbands, which lead to the Women’s Rights Movement. Not being able to be self-reliant and not being able to rely on overly intoxicated husbands; Women joined the Temperance Movements to bring a halt against drunken abusive husbands. The Temperance Movement didn’t only grasp the attention of women, but many other groups across the country. From the Anti-Saloon League to the Temperance league and even women groups like the Women’s Christian Temperance Union. Some contributors like the Anti-Saloon League that were well organized had branches across the United States. Branches that worked in churches to marshal resources for the prohibition fight. These groups also forced the closing of many saloons. In conclusion, this was only the beginning of the Prohibition Era in America. Although purifying some states/cities the groups now face greater...
