Case 13-06 Natural Irony: Accounting Considerations When There Is a Natural Disaster

WetWind Alternatives Corp (WWA) produces electricity through alternative methods such as wave and wind turbines and owns two subsidiaries, Kahuku Wind Inc. and North Shore Wave Electric Inc. (NS Wave), on the north shore of Oahu, HI to utilize the resources of this geographic location in their business venture. Deloitte’s Case 13-06 – “Natural Irony: Accounting Considerations When There Is a Natural Disaster”, discusses a hypothetical scenario where a volcanic eruption causes massive damage to the subsidiaries’ operational assets and poses the question of how to properly record these occurrences in financial statements. The main issue is that Kahuku Wind and NW Wave’s fiscal year end is October 31st so that WWA can have complete financial information for their December 31st consolidated financial statements. If the natural disaster were to happen in mid-December, WWA would need to analyze what steps need to be taken to produce accurate and non-misleading financials by adhering to accounting standards. First let’s discuss whether it is appropriate for WWA to include the subsidiaries’ October 31st financial information on their December 31st statements, regardless of the hypothetical event. According to ASC-810-10-45-12, subsidiary information can be consolidated with parent information if the difference in reporting period is less than three months. WWA’s auditors still wonder if more timely information can be obtained although the October 31st information is in compliance. If WWA were to change the subsidiaries’ fiscal year end it would have to apply the changes retrospectively in accordance of FAS 145, given there is no reason it is impractical to do so. Unfortunately, given Kahuku Wind and NS Wind’s limited accounting personnel and resources, this would violate the cost constraint for WWA and make editing the fiscal year end impractical. To offset this

That is the equivalent of a $10 increase per barrel of oil.1 It is, in a word, staggering. And we may not have seen the end of it. Long before Enron’s collapse, a number of business ethicists and business professionals watched with concern as Wall Street analysts demanded increasingly strong corporate financial performance to support rising corporate stock prices. At the same time, the gargantuan compensation packages (including stock options) of the top executives running these companies became inextricably linked to their companies’ stock prices. In 1990, average CEO pay at major corporations was 107 times the pay of the average worker. By 2004, CEO pay had risen to 431 times the pay of the average employee. (If the pay of average workers in the United States had risen as fast as CEO pay, the lowest paid workers would be earning $23.03 an hour, not $5.15 an hour.)2 It was an “accident” waiting to happen, although everyone was making so much money in the market that no one wanted to admit that something could be fundamentally...

...RESEARCH PAPER 06/36 19 JUNE 2006 A Political and Economic Introduction to China “If the 20th century ended in 1989, the 21st began in 1978” Martin Jacques, The Guardian, 25 May 2006 China’s political and economic rise and what it means for the world is now a central preoccupation of analysts and policy-makers. Public awareness of China is likely to increase as the 2008 Olympics in Beijing draw near. This Research Paper is intended to act as a resource that Members of Parliament and their staff can draw upon when engaging with China’s remarkable transformation. Part I provides key facts and figures about China. Parts II and III review recent developments and future prospects by addressing four key questions. Is political authoritarianism sustainable? Can China’s development be peaceful? What are the main domestic economic challenges facing China? What is China’s impact on the world economy? Part IV summarises key aspects of UK and EU relations with China. The Paper ends with a select bibliography of key sources. The Research Paper is intended to act as a platform for a series of Library Standard Notes that will address in more depth specific issues about China that there is space here only to discuss briefly. Governor First Speech

...robin blackburn THE SUBPRIME CRISIS I n the summer of 2007 many leading banks in the us and Europe were hit by a collapse in the value of mortgage-backed securities which they had themselves been responsible for packaging.* To the surprise of many, the poisonous securities turned out to constitute a major portion of their ultimate asset base. The defaults fostered a credit crunch as all financial institutions hoarded cash and required ever widening premiums before lending to one another. The Wall Street investment banks and brokerages haemorrhaged $175 billion of capital in the period July 2007 to March 2008, and Bear Stearns, the fifth largest, was ‘rescued’ in March, at a fire-sale price, by JP Morgan Chase with the help of $29 billion of guarantees from the Federal Reserve. Many of the rest only survived by selling huge chunks of preferred stock, with guaranteed premium rates of return, to a string of ‘sovereign funds’, owned by the governments of Abu Dhabi, Singapore, South Korea and China, among others. By the end of January 2008, $75 billion of new capital had been injected into the banks, but it was not enough. In the uk the sharply rising cost of liquidity destroyed the business model of a large mortgage house, leading to the first bank run in the uk for 150 years and obliging the British Chancellor first to extend nearly £60 billion in loans and guarantees to its depositors and then to take the concern, Northern Rock, into public ownership. In late January Société...
