1. According to Maslow’s hierarchy, which basic needs did Shank’s old boss fail to meet?
Amanda Shank’s old boss told her ‘You’re just a number. You can be replaced at any time.’ This statement shows that Shank’s old boss failed to meet four of the five of Maslow’s hierarchy needs.
Firstly her boss indicates that she could be replaced at any time. This instils in Shank a sense of fear for her continual employment or job security which fails to meet the need for Safety in Maslow’s hierarchy. How can Shank be motivated to work knowing that at any time she could be replaced and out of work?
By not meeting the need for safety, Shank’s old work automatically can’t meet the three higher needs of Belongingness, Esteem, and Self-actualisation. However there are also other relevant reasons Shank’s old work would have not met these needs.
Shank’s boss tells her she is just a number, in other word’s she doesn’t have any defining features or skills that are appreciated at the work place. This is further enforced with the following words ‘You can be replaced at any time’. This lack of recognition and appreciation fails to meet Esteem needs in Maslow’s hierarchy. Shank’s hard work has gone unnoticed and unappreciated so why would she bother to continue to work hard and push herself for greater things. It also severely affects her confidence in her own ability in the workplace. How can she push for more responsibility or higher status thinking that she is barely capable in her current position?
The boss’s statement also doesn’t provide Shank with any sense of belonging. Clearly she doesn’t have a positive relationship with her supervisor indicated by the lack of emotion and attachment in their statement. In their eyes Shank’s just an employee number, a single cog in the workplace machine with no other value than that. This lack of acceptance and care fail to meet…...

Flight 001- Case Study

...Case Study: Flight 001 1) According to the Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs, shanks old boss fail to meet social involvement for his business. She did not know her old boss in the company she worked for before because he failed to be more involved with his employees who worked for his store and with the store as well. The store was run by a guy who had his office halfway across the country. Making the employees such as shank feel like the owner did not care for his business so why should they care. I would say he would need to become more involved in his company by visiting the store once in a while at least once a month just to see how his store is doing and to be able to get to meet the people who work for him and basically run his store. 2) Feeling underpaid might affect work of a Flight 001 associate in a way that their motivation and desire to work for that company may decrease. The Expectancy Theory which is also known as the valance Instrumentality Expectancy Theory explains that people are constantly creating expectations about future events. If things seem reasonably likely and attractive, we will believe we could make the difference and therefore motivate us to make the future come true. So in this case if the associate feels underpaid he or she will not be motivated to work and make a difference, for what if he or she is not getting valued for her work. A manager could increase the employees motivation by showing them something desirable, indicating how......

...Week 6: Case Study for Flight 001 Florence M. Kolecyck-Yap MGMT303 DeVry University Week 6: Case Study for Flight 001 1. According to Maslow's hierarchy, which basic needs did Shank's old boss fail to meet? Explain why the needs have not been met. What could be done to meet these missing needs? Shank’s old boss failed to meet the needs that Maslow shows related to Belongingness, Esteem and Self-Actualization. Her old boss lacked being part of the business on the level of which their employee’s worked at by not visiting and taking note of what is important to the employee who work directly with their clients. Her old boss also lacked being a person to a name with meeting face-to-face. She felt like they didn’t value their stores and employee’s. 2. Use the Expectancy Theory and/or the Equity Theory of motivation to explain how feeling underpaid might affect the work of a Flight 001 associate and what a manager can do to increase the employee's motivation. According to our text book the “Expectancy theory rests on four basic assumptions. First, it assumes that behavior is determined by a combination of forces in the individual and in the environment. Second, it assumes that people make decisions about their own behavior in organizations. Third, it assumes that different people have different types of needs, desires, and goals. Fourth, it assumes that people make choices from among alternative plans of behavior, based......

Case Study Flight 001

...Case Study Flight 001 Motivating your employees as a manager or owner is one of the keys to having a successful business. In retail, every employee plays an important role. Whether the job is temporary or a permanent career for an individual, it is important to encourage an individual by hearing their ideas and making them a part of the big picture. It is important that management empowers and motivate the employees. There are three theories I will talk about in this case study. According to Maslow’s Hierarchy, there are five categories each human need: Physiology, security, belongingness, esteem, and self-actualization. According to the Flight 011 video, Amanda Shank, the Assistant Store Leader, worked for a company where she did not feel valued. She was told that she was just one of the numbers (Flight 011, 2010). The needs that were not met were a mixture of self actualization and self esteem; her opinions are not valued, therefore, there is no motivation to move up or be successful at the company. If Shank’s managers ensured her that she is valued to the company and gives her positive feedbacks to do better. There might have been a chance for her to be motivated to stay in that company and even move up in the corporate ladder. “Expectancy Theory suggests that motivation depends on two things – how much we want something and how likely we think we are to get it” (Griffin, 2011). The position in retail can be viewed as a temporary job to most. The employees......

...Flight 001 case study Management 303 1. According to Maslow's hierarchy, which basic needs did Shank's old boss fail to meet? Explain why the needs have not been met. What could be done to meet these missing needs? In Maslow’s hierarchy there are five levels with the highest one being self-actualization. Shank’s old boss failed to meet her social and esteem needs. Social needs include the need for belonging and friendships, and esteem needs are the next step to social needs where a person wants to be recognized for her work and needs to know that he or she is doing something meaningful. Shank’s old boss never got involved in her work nor spent any time to review what she was doing. This made her feel that her work made no difference to the organization. Both her social and esteem needs were unmet due to the lack of attention by her boss. To avoid this condition the manager should ensure that there is regular communication with their employees. There should be weekly or monthly meetings to let the employees know what’s going on in the organization, and they should implement some kind of incentive program. The managers should provide feedback and give compliments and other forms of recognition when it is due. Also there should be an open door policy throughout the organization where employees can approach upper management to express ideas or concerns. 2. Use the Expectancy Theory and/or the Equity Theory of motivation to explain how feeling underpaid might affect......

Case Study Flight 001

...of a Flight 001 associate and what a manager can do to increase the employee's motivation. According to the textbook the expectancy theory “Suggests that motivation depends on two things-how much we want something and how likely we think we are to get it.” (Griffin, 2010) The Equity theory states “that people are motivated to seek social equity in the rewards they receive for performance.” (Griffin 2010) Using both of these theories we can explain this. Now the environment at Flight 001 is a 180 degree turnaround from Shank’s last job. If an employee at Flight 001 felt underpaid there their work might be negatively affected. An employee expects that they will receive adequate pay for the position they fill and if the employee puts in a lot of extra time and effort into their work going above and beyond they may feel entitled to a pay raise and maybe even a promotion. To help increase this employees motivation a manager could Figure out what the employee is after, be it a raise or maybe even a promotion. Then he could evaluate the performance of the employee and figure out what the companies desired performance levels are for that type of reward and set a reasonable goal and track for the employee to follow. If the employee is motivated enough by what he wants he will strive to meet the goals and expectations his employers set before him. Q3. ...October 2013 JULY AT THE MULTIPLEX Introduction: Mr. Mull T. Plex and Consortium: We at Bell Consultants Inc. are excited to be serving as your advisors regarding the possibility of a class action lawsuit against your theaters. The plaintiff, Tommy, claims that he was dissatisfied with his movie-going experience while attempting to view the movie “The Governator” at the advertised time of 1:00 PM at the Royal 16 Theater complex at the Eastfield Mall. Tommy claims that it is fraudulent misrepresentation to have 20 minutes of advertisements play before the start of the movie thereby forcing the movie to start at 1:20 PM, well after the advertised time. The consortium has already taken the first step in determining the validity of Tommy’s case by pursuing a customer survey to determine whether the average moviegoer is dissatisfied with the showing of these pre-movie advertisements. The statistical results of these surveys as well as the guidelines formed by the consortium will be used to form our recommendations and conclusions regarding this matter. Facts: * Tommy was excited to see the movie “The Governator” at the Royal 16 Theater at the advertised time of 1:00 PM as stated in the local newspaper. * The advertised time of 1:00 PM appeared in multiple places: The local newspaper, verbally by the cashier, the movie theater’s marquee, and the ticket. * The ticket contained no other relevant statements * Tommy arrived at the theater 15 minutes before the......

Case Study: Motivating Employees - Empowered and Appreciated: Flight 001

...feeling underpaid might affect the work of a Flight 001 associate and what a manager can do to increase the employee's motivation. Expectancy theory suggests that motivation depends on two things—how much we want something and how likely we think we are to get it (Griffin, 2013, 2011). Expectancy Theory assumes that behavior is determined by a combination of forces in the individual and in the environment, that people make their own decisions about their own behaviors in the organization, that different people have different types of needs, desires, and goals, and it assumes that people make choices from among alternative plans of behavior (Griffin, 2013, 2011). Pretty much the expectancy theory works like “what will I get if I do this?”. So feeling underpaid might affect the associate’s work because less pay could mean for them that they will do the bare minimum. There are some people who do the bare minimum because they don’t want to go above and beyond outside of their pay grade. Increasing an employee’s motivation to do more when a manager can’t increase their pay or can’t offer more then what the employee wants is making them feel appreciated. A manager can do this by encourages the employee, being verbal about how good of a job they are doing, and give them more trust so the employee feels valued. Based on Herzberg does Two Factor Theory, what hygiene factors can you identify that are being met within Flight 001's work environment based on comments made by......

Music Effect on Student

...Doctoral Program Center for Research and Evaluation The Alan Shawn Feinstein Graduate School Johnson & Wales University 1 Paper presented at the 42nd annual meeting of the New England Educational Research Organization, April, 2010, Portsmouth, NH. 2 Introduction Music is a significant part of our lives. People listen to music on the radio at home and in their car; they watch music videos on television or hand held technology; they buy CDs or download music; and they attend concerts. People also hear music in stores, restaurants, sporting events, and doctors’ offices (Schellenberg, Peretz, & Vieillard, 2008). Music is very important to many adolescents and they spend a considerable amount of their time listening to music. One study with N = 2,465 adolescents ages 13 and 14 found that participants listened to music for an average of 2.45 hours per day (North, Hargreaves, & O’Neill, 2000). Music has become a personal accompaniment in many teenagers’ lives because of the availability and popularity of personal music listening devices. In 2009, Jaffray released the results from the 18th semi-annual survey, “taking stock with teens.” The team of researchers surveyed approximately N = 1,200 students, with an average age of 16.3, in 12 cities across the United States and received an additional N = 10,000 online responses. The results showed that 92% of teenagers reported owning a personal music player. As a result of the popularity of these players, music has become......

After viewing the video and learning and listening to these employees problems and how they work it is safe to say the Flight 001 is a growing company with strong intensions as well motivate employees that help keep the brand strong and successful. According to Shank’s old bosses they failed to meet where the motivation steps to help the rest of the work force to be loyal to the company and behind the name. Her old bosses where just their in person but not in heart or mind, they just showed up to the job as a job not as a career. When your boss comes to your store and he or she doesn’t have the skill to show the rest of the crew that they are behind the brand or team then that negativity will show on the employees and how they work in the future. A boss must show interest in this position as well as the job to help show other employees that his job isn’t just a paycheck, it’s a lot more and should be treated as a career instead of something to get by. 2. ...Minh Nguyen Principles Of Management 12/07/12 Case Study: Flight 001 1. Maslow’s hierarchy consists of five need levels in order of importance: physiological, security, belongingness, esteem, and self-actualization. At Flight 001 store, Shank’s old boss failed to meet three basic needs. First is the need for belonginess. It was not met because her boss made her feel as if she is just a number to the organization and could easily be replaced by someone else. As Shank mentioned in the video, “the people who own the company or the CEO is just some unknown person - you might not even know their name - that is in an office halfway across the country”. Her statement shows that Shank obviously doesn’t have the personal connection with her employer. Therefore, her mentality is to complete the given work at the minimum standard as a routine and not looking forward to any challenges. Secondly, Shank’s old boss failed to meet the need of esteem. Shank didn’t feel good about her job because there was no appreciation, no recognition or any sense of achievement for the work that she has done. She doesn’t feel appreciated at her work and this is due to the poor treatment that upper management had toward its employees. Per Maslow’s theory, self-esteem is important because it motivates employees to work harder. Last, the need for self-actualization was not met as Shank’s old boss failed to let her participate in the decision making in regard to her work. She wasn’t given......

Attachment and Relationship Satisfaction

...attachment styles for realtionship satisfaction, the present study investigates if there is a difference between males and females in relationship satisfaction depending upon attachment anxiety or attachment avoidance. In both genders, if people experience these attachment styles, they are more likely to feel less satisfied from their relationship. In addition, this study will examine whether there is a significant gender difference by considering attachment styles and implications of them.
