Case study #1
1.How did cliff take advantages of principles of operant conditioning to modify his staff's behavior?
Cliff realized that to increase productivity and morale he needed to use more positive reinforcement. The previous manager was very hard on his staff, this simple change would make the staff to respond positively towards Cliff, therefore productivity would increased.

2.Why did cliffs predecessor's strategy of punishing undesirable behavior not work very well? Cliff’s predecessor strategy of punishing undesirable behavior did not work very well because putting someone down over and over again does not boost confidence. They probably want to do better, but it is harder to want to get the job done because they are so used to the demeaning behavior and not knowing how the boss will react to a job well done. They probably think he will find something wrong anyways. That’s why positive reinforcement works better in most situations

Even if punishment and reinforcement strategies were equally effective at controlling behavior, why would reinforcement remain preferable?
It didn’t work because it was not what he was used to doing or what he was known for; he was more at ease with reinforcements over punishment because there were positive connotations to this method. Reinforcement works best because it bring about the positive and show how and why it is rewarded, while punishment only focuses on the negative and therefore results in demoralization.

3. How did cliff make use of partial reinforcement schedules?
Partial or intermittent reinforcement schedule is when the behavior is reinforced some but not all the time. Learning occurs more rapidly under a continuous reinforcement schedule, however, behavior lasts longer after reinforcement stops when it is learned under a partial reinforcement schedule. Partial reinforcement

...1.2 Case Study: Whither an MBA at Strutledge By: Ashley Tinkham 1.2 Case Study: Whither an MBA at Strutledge Tinkham, 1 President of Strutledge, After reviewing the Board of Regents’ plan and reasons behind the desire to implement an MBA program at Strutledge I have determined there to be a lack of information to make a decision at this time. The information to make a supportive decision on whether to implement an MBA program is not sufficient enough and increases the risks of failure of the program. Failure or an unsuccessful implementation of an MBA program at Strutledge can be catastrophic to the reputation of the school. Thus making the situation of rising costs and decreasing enrollment worse. The Board of Regents could be on the right track of implementing a MBA program to attract more students but this can only be determined through data. The question that truly needs to be answered is if the area needs or desires a MBA program and only if the answer is yes to that question should the idea of implementing an MBA program be explored as an option. My suggestion is that the Board of Regents organize their thoughts around why they think an MBA program would be beneficial to Strutledge. From what I can gather an MBA program would help to attract students who have already graduated from their undergraduate studies and are looking for more, but how else would it benefit Strutledge? When considering implementing...

...Tanglewood Case 1 In: Business and Management Tanglewood Case 1 To: Donald Penchiala, the Director of Staffing Services RE: Tanglewood Retail Case January 18, 2012 Every organization in the global economy has to develop a strong staffing strategy if they wish to remain competitive and be successful. Tanglewood Retail Stores is one of the largest retailers among 12 regions locally and oversees. After examining the report that you provided me, I have analyzed the staffing strategy and would like to provide you with my recommendations. Acquire or Develop Talent: After reviewing the Tanglewood Case along with exhibit 1.7 in Part One of our text Strategic Staffing, I feel the staffing levels and quality listed and the need for developing talent and exceptional workforce that Tanglewood currently has is one of its greatest assets and will play into a key staffing strategy. Tanglewood has differentiated itself from its competition in its development of an organizational culture that provides employees with a level of expertise that far exceeds its competition. Looking at any successful organization you will notice that their internal culture is a key factor in its ability to meet organizational goals. It is clear that Tanglewood has a family/team oriented environment. For instance, people from the same region as the store will have better knowledge of its clientele and are a better fit because they know the culture of the environment and live in the same atmosphere...

Housing Helpers Case Study 1

...Housing Helpers Case Study 1 By Kevin Wilkerson BUS-4046 Employee and Labor Relations U07A1 Instructor Andrew Ansoorian May 26th, 2014 As the contract negotiation continues between Beth and Jim: Beth: That sounds very tempting Jim, but even though the CPI has risen by just 2%, the cost of living has risen by 3.5% and the working force needs that money now to support their families. Jim: Well, is there any other thing that we can propose that might get us closer to an agreement? Beth: Well, Jim, I think that we will hold a membership meeting to see where the members stand on this issue and your offer of 2% each year for 4 years. Jim: Ok, we will reschedule another session after the meeting. Another meeting resumes: Beth: The members have met and we have a couple of other proposals that might be of interest to you. Jim: Ok, what do you have in mind? Beth: We would like to propose a 3%. Cost of living allowance increase as well as an additional 5 days paid vacation for all employees, and work hours that are flexible such as 4 10 hour days or a 5/4/9 schedule which would keep production up, but allow the employees to spend more time with their families also. Jim: Beth, we simply cannot afford for employees to receive such a pay increase right now, but the alternative work hours might be something that we can talk about. Beth: HR has run the numbers, and the number of employees that have seniority and are getting up there in age are costing us more in...

...Keller Graduate School of Management Case Study 1: Guest Satisfaction at the Convention Center Hotel Week 3 Irene Garcia Vilardosa HOSP582 Survey of Hospitality Management Dr. Pratt Introduction In order to be successful in the market it is not sufficient to attract new customers. Managers should also concentrate on retaining existing customers implementing effective policies of customer satisfaction and loyalty. In hotel industry, customer satisfaction is largely hooked upon quality of service. A management approach focused on customer satisfaction can improve customer loyalty, thus increasing the positive image of the touristic destination. Hence, exploring the importance for customers of hotel attributes in hotel selection is indispensable. Problems with front office In order to solve the customers dissatisfaction issues related with check in and check out, Frank should take into account the reservations and have more employees working at front desk when the number of reservations is higher so they do not have to be waiting for a long time. During major arrivals and departures days, the staff has to be increased so that the guests are quickly addressed and they can continue with their trips or business without wasting too long. Lesson-1(Case Study on Listo System)

...Lesson1: Case Study on Listo Systems Mani Kumar Budathoki International American University (IAU) MGT 500: Organization Behavior and Leadership Dr. Om Prasad Sitaula September 17, 2014 Overview of Listo Systems: Listo Systems is a pioneering graphic agency with a long span of success history. After the beginning of 1990s, the company grew frenetically and became one of the best graphic service companies in the world. The pace of new technology has created the more opportunities as well as challenges for the company and customers. However, advancements of this new technology have helped to produce more competitors with a better quality service and product. Due to more emergences of new competitors in the markets, the customers have got more options while opting to buy quality products and services. With all these changes, the industry has been facing the new threats in terms of security and product-thefts. Question No-1: The impacts of power shifting from the seller to the buyer: More competitions in terms of quality products and services are providing the customers more choices than ever before. As a result, customers want more quality products and services for less money, more flexibility and convenience, and more innovation. Listo systems had monopoly power in the early 1990s, so easily able to earn a huge success in a short span of time, but when a new technology is introduced then more and more competitors participated in providing the same services to...

Case Study Chapter 6: #1-3

...Case Study Chapter 6 The two values I believe Schwartz created that are affecting Bain & Company, Home Depot and Best Buy include: conformity and universalism. In regards to universalism, Bain & Company and Best Buy began to lower the goals for employees’ sales, which resulted in their receiving bonuses still plausible. In addition, Best Buy tried to keep their employees engaged through the hard time by setting up online surveys for them to give the company general ideas for cost cutting. This showed that the companies understood the employees’ situations, appreciated them the best they could and tried to protect them from losing their jobs. The companies showed restraint and tried not to make the employees upset in their conformity values. For example, instead of firing employees, Steve Ellis began to hire people he thought would be successful for after the recession was over. This gave additional talented people an opportunity to work instead of going through lay offs during this time. During the recession, Ellis used his affective, cognitive and behavioral components of his attitude to show employees that he cared about how they felt, displayed his beliefs and ideas, and how he intended to move forward instead of back. Ellis made it possible to hire more people during the recession. He did not see this as a setback but an opportunity to bring talented workers on board with his company. Best Buy created online surveys for their employees to give their ideas for cutting...

Case Study #1 Turner Test Prep Co.

...possessed about 10 percent of the small market and was facing fierce competition from its rival company, National Testing Services (NTC). By Spring of 2003, Turner was pleased that the number of customers was rising each session, but was concerned that she had not tapped enough of the market and was not growing in the right direction. Furthermore, a lack of student attendance in live lectures caused her to wonder if there was opportunity in formatting the course differently. Finally, Turner realized that she neglected to calculate her break-even point. In short, Turner was questioning the effectiveness of several aspects of her business plan such as her differentiation, marketing, and advertising strategies. At the beginning of this case study Turner starts off making some good choices such as using the effectuation process to come up with her idea to develop a CPA testing prep company. This process leads her to choose a career path and business that makes use of her knowledge, experience, and resources. Another great choice Turner makes is to do research to find a prime location for her business. In addition, it is wise of her to devote so much time and effort into developing a service that has a competitive advantage over competitors’ services. However, Turner overlooks several important opportunities to build a comprehensive business plan such as doing market research to ensure that her method of instruction is one that would be valued by the majority of potential customers...

...reference 1-429-140 May 11, 2012 How to Write a Business Case Study A business case study confronts students with a real-life dilemma and engages all their abilities to solve its challenges. In presenting a specific business or policy situation—one that does not have an obvious solution—the case provides information for classroom discussion and other study. A good case study stimulates an educated conversation and the building of business knowledge. The best case studies are learning-centered, not instructor-centered. Details describing the differences between the two can be found in Exhibit 1. A student reading the case should be provided with the information needed to make good decisions about the case, or the ability to find the information if that is a learning objective. Information critical to solving the case should never be contained exclusively in the case’s teaching note, because doing so puts the instructor in the center of the learning, and leads to frustrated students. Cases should satisfy professors and students as well as the businesses, organizations, and people featured in the cases. Although these interests might appear in conflict, a case that is written with fairness and intelligence will ultimately receive the respect of all parties. The best cases have several structural characteristics in common including a protagonist, specific time frame, and use of past tense. An author who becomes experienced in case writing may deviate from this pattern, but doing...
