Case Study for Julie

The intervention program called Fast ForWord is a program that is computer-based and has a purpose to help strengthen cognitive skills that are required in order to be successful in reading and learning. This program is for students to use individually or as a small group and is a type of curriculum. The program is supposed to be used for approximately 30-100 minutes per day for five days a week (which averages to about four to 16 weeks). Based on the research, the effects of this curriculum were small on the domains of reading fluency and alphabetics and there was a medium to large effect on the domains of reading comprehension and the general literacy achievements.

The Wilson Reading System is an intervention type of curriculum that is meant for a small group and is designed to help promote accuracy in reading (also known as decoding) and spelling for students who have certain word-level deficits. This program is also meant to help with reading fluency as well as other things. According to the evidence, from this program, there was a small for fluency, alphabetics, and comprehension in the context of these domains.

The curriculum program called Failure Free Reading helps improve vocabulary, efficiency, word recognition, and reading comprehension. It is extremely helpful for improving fluency in sight words. This program can be for small group, individual, or the whole class. The evidence of improvements in fluency, comprehension, and alphabetics were small.

The Error Correction & Word Drill Techniques has many strategies and cues to help improve upon reading strategies. The intervention/curriculum can be used within small groups or with a teacher. It is also useful for helping build vocabulary and if a student misses a word, it is useful to have them repeat the word. All of these tips are also useful when it comes to fluency. The evidence shows that all of these are effective ways to help the student improve.

Each of these interventions/curriculum methods has shown some evidence in the progress of the students. There has been small improvements in the areas of: decoding, sight words, reading fluency, and many other things necessary to help Julie and her other classmates in this program improve and be successful in their educational journey. Some of these programs can be used for other grades as well, not just for third grade.
