Robert-Falcon Ouellette was born in Saskatchewan but was raised in Calgary of Cree descent. Ouellette has served with the navy for 18 years and is now setting his sights onto trying to become mayor of Winnipeg. Ouellette nows belongs to the navy reserves at HMCS CHIPPAWA in Winnipeg. Through his time in the navy, he has earned a PhD in Educational Anthropology by studying at night, becoming the second aboriginal man from Laval University to earn this degree.1 One of Ouellette’s main issues is making a greener city of Winnipeg. If Ouellette is voted in as mayor, he will create a fund to put towards the betterment of the city by paying for environmental programs. With Ouellette’s long term goal of trying …show more content…
It has also been proven that a greener society promotes well-being and improves mental health.4 The disadvantages to becoming a greener community is that it will most likely be extremely costly and take up vast amounts of time.5 The second platform issue of Ouellette is to make Winnipeg more child friendly. Ouellette will improve the quality of life for children by improving the transit systems of Winnipeg. (I.e busses, and a support for cycling.) Ouellette claims that this will allow for the children of Winnipeg to enjoy Winnipeg and its culture. Ouellette is also planning on improving housing and and reducing poverty rates. With Winnipeg already having a high child poverty rate Ouellette makes this one of his main sub-goals for this project. Ouellette is also attempting to lower the voting age of the city allowing peoples under the age of 18 to feel like they are contributing to the city in a significant way. …show more content…
Bowman will accomplish this in a multitude of ways: Increase the tax credit of small business, reduce the tax rate of small businesses and hold an annual small business panel each month. Bowman is quoted as saying "For nearly a decade I have advocated for small business because I believe they are the backbone of the Winnipeg economy."8 The positives of this are that small businesses will thrive and if Bowman is right in stating that small business are the backbone of Winnipeg, then it will exponentially increase the wealth of Winnipeg. The disadvantages of this are that because of all the tax cuts, the Government of Winnipeg will not be getting as much money for roads and public spaces. The second thing Bowman wants to do as a part of his main platform is bring in a new tax model. This is also a strategy to expand Winnipeg's economic wealth. With the new tax model, Bowman will limit property taxes over the next 4 years. Bowman said he will try and find an alternate way to find funding outside of high property taxes. An advantage of this would be that citizens will pay less on taxes, and be able to use the money they save to improve their property, or pay off other taxes reducing debt. A disadvantage is that the government gets less money could possibly result in more speeding tickets and such to find alternate funding.
