Henry knew very little about law and needed two of four signatures to become licensed to practice law. Both law professor George Wythe and attorney Robert Carter Nicholas refused to give him an examination. Patrick Henry, beginning his cause against the establishment, appealed and convinced both to give him the required oral exams. Both passed him, but admonished him to continue to learn about the legal system. With his success, he decided to seek a signature from Attorney General John Randolph, one of the best trained and legally minded men in Virginia. Judging from outward appearances, Randolph tried to humiliate the coarse country boy through hours of examination.
