The Lean Implementation

As we have studied, lean manufacturing is one of the initiatives that many major businesses in the world have been trying to adopt in order to remain competitive in an increasingly global market. The focus of this approach is on cost reduction by eliminating non value added activities. Applications of lean manufacturing have been less common in the continuous / process sector, in part because of a perception that this sector is less amenable to many lean techniques, and in part because of the lack of documented applications. This has caused managers to be reluctant to commit to the improvement program. The chosen article for this case study takes a case based approach to address both issues. It describes a case in which lean principles were adapted for the continuous / process sector for application at a large integrated steel mill. Value stream mapping was the main tool used to identify the opportunities for various lean techniques. The article also describes a simulation model that was developed to contrast the ‘‘before’’ and ‘‘after’’ scenarios in detail, in order to illustrate to managers potential benefits such as reduced production lead-time and lower work-in-process inventory. ...Executive Summary The Lean implementation methodology (Lean) has its roots in manufacturing and particularly the automotive sector through the Toyota Production System. Over the last decade, Lean has expanded beyond manufacturing to become an improvement methodology firstly in the service sector and more recently in public sector organisations looking to improve efficiency and customer value. It is within this context that AtoZ Business Consultancy undertook an analysis of Lean implementations across Business Schools and Universities in the UK. This analysis was undertaken using a case study approach of five diverse Higher Education organisations. The case studies included a combination of Russell Group and non Russell Group organisations, research intensive as well as teaching informed organisations and organisations with large non EU student numbers. The organisations were spread geographically across England, Scotland and Wales and included large metropolitan areas as well as smaller more rural locations. There has been a driver for Lean in all public sector organisations as a result of draconian government budget cuts. However, very few empirical studies have reported the application of Six Sigma in SMEs; the reasons may be attributed to several myths associated with Six Sigma. The purpose of this paper is to assess the current status of QI in the UK manufacturing SMEs and report the differences in the quality management practices of Six Sigma SMEs against the ISO certified firms. Design/methodology/approach – A survey-based approach was adopted to understand the established quality management practices in the UK SMEs. A short survey instrument was designed by reviewing the literature on quality improvement initiatives in SMEs. A sample of 500 manufacturing SMEs across UK was selected through stratified random sampling technique. Findings – A response rate of 12.7 per cent was achieved and included respondents at senior management and middle management level across the manufacturing industry in the UK. The purpose of this paper is to increase the understanding of how various measures of lean thinking can be implemented in a construction project and how these measures work. In order to enhance unbiased theoretical reasoning a frame of reference is first developed through a literature review of peer-reviewed journal articles. The empirical part of the research utilises a lean construction pilot project as a case study. Empirical data was mainly collected through a series of three questionnaire surveys, responded by project participants that were involved in the lean implementation effort (approximately 30 responses) and three follow-up workshops in which the key individuals from all partner companies participated (15-20 individuals). The author of this paper functioned as a facilitator and action researcher, responsible for the design and analysis of the surveys and for planning and facilitating the workshops. In some cases, JIT is less of a conscious design and more of a default position. This paper will examine the role of a company’s resource configuration in leading to the use of JIT manufacturing. The research paper reports on a single case study of a small manufacturer that altered its resource configuration from a producer – consumer relationship separated by a buffer, to a simultaneity constraint.
