QUESTIONS
1. What does this case imply about the supply of and demand for employers and the implications for businesses?
The case implies that there is a high demand for employees especially in the high tech industry but the supply is low and has not been met by the volume of the demand making the implications critical for businesses. These organizations are having to step out of the box and go the extra length to ensure they are able to acquire the savvy tech from an early stage. Using tools outside of the normal resume check alongside the educational background, these Companies are able to now “catch them young” by scouting for qualified candidates with needed skills, and recruiting them from colleges instead of waiting till they have completely finished their degree. For instance IBM has made use of its famous Watson computer in certain top schools giving students a chance to challenge the computer. The outcome of these approach will help IBM to narrow down which students to consider and they will work towards luring such students to consider a career at IBM (Robins 2013). As the competition is quite high in this industry, business always have to be creative in their search for talents, be on their toes and pull out all stops in trying to convince potential candidates to choose them instead of their competitors. While some are still struggling to come up with various approach to help them acquire more qualified candidate, the race is still on for the rest in trying to get to the potential perfect candidate first before anyone else.

2. What’s the meaning behind the “search for the purple squirrel” in relation to spotting talent? Is this relevant to non-tech Companies as well? Discuss.
“Search for the purple squirrel” simply means searching for a perfect candidate, which has become increasingly competitive. It is a known fact that a purple squirrel does not exist, well not yet so it is almost impossible to actually find a perfect candidate either. To spot a really good talent requires a lot of detailed work by the Hiring organization, and they are the ones who are best to determine which applying candidate best suits the position and is available in the time frame required as searching for a perfect candidate can take forever and might never happen. This phrase is also relevant to non-tech Companies as all companies tech or not have attributes and qualities they look for in potential candidates. Each one of them have an idea of what a perfect employee for specific positions will be like or what sets of skills and knowledge such candidate would possess, but there is truly never a one perfect candidate for any job and in any industry.
5. Put on your “creative hat’. You’re in charge of HR at a tech start-up. What suggestions can you come up with for “spotting talent?”
Going by the current slowly growing economy and workforce, I will have to suggest using contingent workers for such highly skilled positions. Filing these tech positions can be challenging and getting it wrong by employing the wrong or not fully qualified candidate can be detrimental and costly to the Company. These contingent workers would have been screened, accessed and placed in waiting by experts already in the field to put them in positions that best suits their skills and efforts. Also for a starting business, this process will help to cut cost of the normal hiring process and also of hiring a permanent workers as there won’t be a burden of paying for certain benefits for the permanent positions. A good mechanism put in place to monitor the workers work performance and goal achievement will better help the business to decide in the long term if they would make such worker permanent or not. If such worker has proven beyond measures that they are well suited for the position, it will be of the Company’s benefit to retain them on a more permanent basis before another Company grabs and takes such worker away.
