Facts of The Case
Paul Rogers, on 15th May 2011 late in the night went to Tania Simpson’s, who is his recently separated partner, home unit and broke into her place. He later stabbed her and a male friend of hers Antony Way, after which he took Kayla his five year old daughter with him and drove out to the south into NSW (New South Wales). He the next day early morning pulled off at the highway Bruxner west of Casino killing himself and his daughter ( Australian Broadcasting Corporation. All Rights Reserved., 2012).
Type of Homicide Committed
The type of Homicide that was committed by Paul Rogers in this case was a Domestic Violence Homicide.
Characteristic of Offender
Paul Rogers was born in the year 1971, January 4th and was 40 years old when he dies. He was already married to a woman in the year 2001, with whom he had been in a relationship since 1997. He was in relationship with Ms Simpson along with another woman while he was married and after he got divorced in October 2003 he was with Miss Simpson (Cuneo & Fife-Yeomans, 2011). He had also been charged in the year 1997 of assault and causing occasionally physical harm and was also put on trial for the offence. Also during his employment as a bouncer he had been alleged of assault.
Mr. Rogers during his relationship with Simpson showed signs of a behavior that was extremely controlling. He would discourage Ms. Simpson actively from socializing with her friends and was very demanding (Lewis, Amini, & Lannon, 2001). He did not take care of the management of the park that they both had undertaken neither did he look after the children. When Ms. Simpson was going to have her second child and had gone for her scan, Mr Rogers did not accompany her instead he spent the weekend with his ex girlfriend. Not only this Mr. Rogers was also using various dating websites, he had no involvement with the family or child care (Morello, 2011).
Mr. Rogers after his separation from Tanya Simpson, had taken into talking Ms. Simpson and also did other weird acts such as going to Kayla’s school and engraving a heart on a tree with his and Kayla’s name on a tree, and asking her to go there whenever he missed her. He also got a tattoo engraved on his body with Ms Simpson’s and Kayla and Bronson’s names on it. He also had an attention seeking behavior, where he would send texts to Ms. Simpson threatening he would commit suicide or try to show her that he had been harming himself due to the pain of separation. He not only stalked Ms. Simpson but also Mr. Way (Koubaridis, 2011).
Characteristic of Victim(s)
Tania Simpson
Though Tania Simpson portrayed did not have any fear for the safety of her children or her own personal safety. However she was at all times felt that she was the only parent and did not have any support from Mr. Rogers. It has been observed that she did not discuss about most of her troubles, such as stalking and the threats that Mr. Rogers was giving to her with anyone. No matter what trouble she was facing from Mr. Rogers she never spoke about it to anyone around her (Stolz, 2012).
Antony Way
Born in New Zealand in the year 1977 December 13th and was 33 years when he died. He was friends with Mr. Rogers and had maintained contact with the couple over the years. He was unmarried and in a de facto relationship in Carrara with a woman. However in 2011 his relationship changed with Tania Simpson and he had started staying at her place two nights before his death.
Kayla
Kayla was born in the year 2006, 19th April and was residing with her mother. She was five years old when she died, she had grown up in a disturbed family and would often stay at her maternal grandparents house.
Modus Operandi of Crime
Paul Rogers had taken the surveillance of Ms. Simpson’s place a day prior, he was also extremely well prepared for the crime. He had already kept a knife, towels, a gaffer tape and a hose in his car. His entry into the house was not forced, meaning that he had thought through the whole thing and it was a well planned murder. He first attacked Mr. Way and stabbed him to death, he then attacked Ms. Simpson’s who had 31 blade wounds, of which there were a few of the throat which were made first but were not fatal enough. He then went to Kayla’s room picked her; there were eye witnesses who saw him walking out of the house with her.
The death of Ms. Simpson and Mr. Way occurred due to being stabbed by Mr. Rogers repeatedly after an entry was gained by him into the house of Ms. Simpson. After murdering the two of them Mr. Rogers kidnapped Kyla from the house and drove towards the north of New South Wales. There he asphyxiated Kyla after which he killed himself, making it a murder suicide.
Location of Crime
Tania Simpson and Antony Way died in Queensland in Robina at Ms. Simpson’s home unit whereas Paul Rogers and Kyla Roger died in New South Wales at Piora which is via Casino.
Motivation of Crime
The main motivation behind the crime was rage and obsession that Paul Rogers had developed for Ms. Simpsons. He was unable to accept the fact that the relationship had broken and that she was involved with Mr. Way.
Intervention-Recommendation
There were missed opportunities of intervention in the case of Paul Roger Suicide Murder Case which the welfare agencies and Police should have observed before and intervened at the right time. An alert for child abduction should be broad casted at an earlier stage (Holder, Leary, & Hanes, 2012). The training and policies of QPS is required to be made optimal in response to violence related to family and domestic arenas. Public policy needs to be made in response to such situations of domestic violence to help intervene at the right time to avoid any kind of murder cases. Since the proportion and number of homicide with respect family and domestic violence has been increasing every year there are too many limitations in the present intervention and policing model that are in existence for their prevention. The Justice and Attorney General, Department of Communities and Police should fund the Domestic and Family Violence Death Review Unit so as to ensure that expert, intensive scrutiny is done with respect to every aspect related to such death so that agencies have better response if such similar cases come up in near future.
Intervention Oppurtunities
The QPS Operational Procedures Manual (OPM) under section 19.6.1 provides regulation with respect to how the police is required to respond in situations related to domestic violence. The OPM using the Domestic and Family Violence Protection Act 1989 terminology requires that when a person has been reasonably suspected by an officer as a aggrieved person an investigation is required to take place on the basis of the report, circumstance or complaint as to on what basis such a suspicion has been based on. The section 67(1) of the act states that an aggrieved has been defined as that person for whom the benefit of an order of domestic violence can be sought. Domestic violence has been defined under the act to include harassment or intimidation of any kind on the other person. Like what had happened in the case, following the estranged spouse at all time whenever the spouse is out in the public either by foot or by car, which was being done by Paul Rogers who had become a stalke (Landers, 2012)r. He would also position himself not only outside Ms. Simpson’s house but also her parents’ house and outside My Way’s gym as well. Once it has been suspected by an officer that a person is aggrieved under the DVFPA then under the OPM it shall be the duty of the officer to go to the aggrieved and interview them regarding the same. The officer is also supposed to interview the witnesses of the act and the respondents as well who form this suspicions basis.
Conclusion
In this case the murder could have been avoided if the intervention had taken at the right, or if the signs that Paul were showing in his behavior was abnormal had been recognized at an earlier. There were various steps and measures that could have been taken to avoid the triple murder and suicide that took place as a domestic violence murder. Though best was done by Tania’s relatives and all the professionals who were trying to advice and counsel her to keep her and her childeren safe. However no one could assume that Paul Rogers bizarre behavior would actually lead him to commit such a cold blooded murder. This type of case is not a one of a kind case there have been 24 murders in Queensland every year because of domestic and family violence.

...Case Study Southwestern University Southwestern University (SWU), a large stage college in Stephenville, Texas, 20 miles southwest of the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex, enrolls close to 20,000 students. In a typical town-gown relationship, the school is a dominant force in the small city, with more students during fall and spring than permanent residents. A longtime football powerhouse, SWU is a member for the Big Eleven conference and is usually in the top 20 in college football rankings. To bolster its chances of reaching the elusive and long-desired number-one ranking, in 2001, SWU hired the legendary BoPitterno as its head coach. One of Pitterno’s demands on joining SWU had been a new stadium. With attendance increasing, SWU administrators began to face the issue head-on. After 6 months of study, much political arm wrestling, and some serious financial analysis, Dr. Joel Wisner, president of Southwestern University, had reached a decision to expand the capacity at its on-campus stadium. Adding thousands of seats, including dozens of luxury skyboxes, would not please everyone. The influential Pitterno had argued the need for a first-class stadium, one with built-in dormitory rooms for his players and a palatial office appropriate for the coach of a future NCAA champion team. But the decision was made, and everyone, including the coach, would learn to live with it. The job now was to get construction going immediately after the 2007 season...
