Ethical Dilemma at Northlake
Synopsis:
The story begins with Jim McIntosh, Vice President of Finance at Amalgamated Forest Products. He is involved in an intense discussion with Frank who is manager of Corporate Reporting. Jim McIntosh is troubled because it has come to his attention that Frank is prepared to go to the public regarding a falsified financial analysis report that is being presented to legislation. Frank firmly believes that that the financial estimates contained within the report “Endangered Species: The Pulp and Paper Industry in the Upper Peninsula” is seriously exaggerated and will cause the company financial problems in the future.
Frank personally feels the report is unethical. The report spells out what Amalgamated Forest’s plan is in response to the government’s proposal to place sewage controls on the discharge of waste water from the pulp and paper mills in Northlake, a town home to around 10,000 people. The section of the report that Frank is referencing was prepared by Tina Pacquette, Manager of Financial Analysis. Tina’s reported that Amalgamated Forest Products would suffer great financial loss if they were to build and implement a lagoon as legislation was proposing. The numbers Tina was reporting were almost three times the amount that was reported the year before. Frank knew that if legislation passed then the operating cost would rise about eight to ten percent; however, Tina’s report stated it would be about thirty percent.
Frank has been employed by Amalgamated Forest for ten years and he realizes how much he has gained in the employment. He started out in the yard and gained a promotion to accounting after he injured his leg. The company sent him to college to further his education and gain his Certified Management Accountants (CMA) designation. He returned to the company and grew within the corporation finally being promoted to manager of corporate reporting.
During the argument Jim McIntosh becomes frustrated with Frank and goes to get Jean Letourneau the President of the company. Jim and Jean return to speak further with Frank. Frank now voices to the president that the report is not true. Frank states that the report implies that Amalgamated Forest products would face bankruptcy if legislation passed. He explained that Tina’s numbers presented were exaggerated and higher than what they should be. Jean explains that the company must tailor figures based on whatever the specific need was at the time. Frank is told he needs to think of the “bigger picture.” He reminded Frank of how Amalgamated Forest Products had brought jobs to Northlake and the community was reliant on the company. He further stated that company’s profits would suffer if legislation passed and could even face closure by headquarters.
Frank went on to address how the report had left out the fact that the company was indeed doing damage to Wanawashee River. He pointed out that the chemicals being dumped into the river had to be cleaned up years prior by their competition and the people of their town was drinking that same water. He tried expressing his concern for Jean Letourneau in that if legislation discovered he had lied in this report he could potentially go to jail and Frank himself could lose his designation.
Mr. Letourneau explained to Frank that he had plans of promoting Frank to V.P. Controller. Jean expressed how he would hate to see Frank dismissed from the company over an issue that was so small and really no concern/responsibility of his. He reminded Frank of everything the company had put forth for Frank and he should be more appreciative of all that Amalgamated Forest had been provided to him. Mr. Letourneau stated to Frank that pollution had always been a problem and always would be. He encouraged Frank to just forget the whole matter of the report that was going to be submitted to legislation.
Finding of Fact #1: Issues dealing with the interpersonal relations and the question of ethics among coworkers such as that between Frank Tina Pacquette. Another example, is the degrading and angry way that management speaks with Frank when he attempts to voice his concerns – “Well, Frank, your pigheadedness has really caused a problem for all of us!” (Grant).
Recommendation #1: Workplace relations play a vast part on an organization in whole. When poor interactions exist in the workplace it can become a substantial basis for stress and cause feelings of disregard between employees. The values and behaviors of employees are vital to an organization. Interpersonal relationships hinge on trust, making trust essential to the success of a company. If those within the company do not trust one other the organization cannot function as efficiently to achieve the company’s goals. Interpersonal relationships can be either a source of stress or the social support that helps employees cope with stressors (Hellriegel & Slocum, p. 225).
Most people have within them some degree of a moral compass which can be conveyed in how they treat others and even their own actions. If a person, such as Tina, lacks strong ethical values then they may are more apt to participate in behaviors that could negatively impact the organization. Issues had become evident of Frank’s and Tina’s work relationship because Frank felt Tina work was less than adequate and ethically crossed a line.
In the Ethical Dilemma at Northlake there are unethical behaviors by several people in the organization. These are taking place all the way up the corporate ladder. There are still things that can be put into play that will help in strengthening the overall behavior within a company. First and foremost you must show by example, employees need to see how well managers and such practice the code of ethics set forth by the organization.
I would recommend the development of a company Code of Ethics. This will in turn help employees recognize what their organization identifies as acceptable behaviors. The advantages of this include: “to legitimize the consideration of ethics as part of decision making, to avoid uncertainties among employees about what is right and wrong, and • to avoid inconsistencies in decision making caused by an organizational reward system that appears to reward unethical behavior” (Hellriegel & Slocum, p. 200).
Employees can play a vital role in reporting unethical behavior, but companies must offer a place to hear their complaints. Effective interpersonal communication at work allows employees to perform their jobs more efficiently. Amalgamated Forest Products needs to provide ways for effective interaction with various different types of communication styles. They must build skills in not only conflict prevention but management.
Finding of Fact #2: Upper management is troubled with what it at stake in regards to the legislation passing. Management has expressed possible negative effects on the community of Northlake and Amalgamated Forest Products.
Recommendation #2: I would recommend that Amalgamated Forest Products not submit the fabricated report. If they present this overstated and false report to the government they are committing fraud. Mr. Letourneau has the potential of facing serious legal repressions if it discovered he presented a falsified report. The corporation would then not need to worry about reduced profitability because they would not just be downsized but very likely closed not by the government and not headquarters. Instead Amalgamated Forest Products could strive to find a workable plan that works with the requests of legislation. I would recommend the company look into possible tax credits or subsides that would be obtainable to help the organization become accommodating with the required sewage controls for the discharge this company is imposing on the environment. With possible tax breaks and subsidies there could be a possibility of an agreement set that would allow them to pay back the funding over a specified period of time. This would allow the company to continue in a good legal standing and employment would remain complete and any loss of profit would not be a concern.
Finding of Fact #3: It is apparent that the pollution Aborigine Forest Products is putting off in the waters has to be addressed. Frank has described how pollution is slowly ruining the environment and community. For example, sewage is running off into Wanawashee River and contaminating the drinking water for the community.
Recommendation#3: Because of the many toxic chemicals that are used in paper making, I would stress the importance of implanting the new legislation be implemented as quickly as reasonably possible. This would in turn put into effect the needed controls on the discharge accumulated toxic chemicals created by the company. This would help in further protecting the environment and help creating a better sustainable, environmentally safe production for Amalgamated Forest Products.
