Catch 22: A Postmodern Archetype American author Joseph Heller is considered to be a part of the postmodern era of literature which occurred between the decades of 1940 and 1970. (“Postmodernism”). The decade of the release of Catch 22 and other novels such as Slaughterhouse Five, Lost in the Funhouse, and Gravity’s Rainbow is often marked as the peak decade of the postmodern era. (Matterson). The content of Joseph Heller’s Catch 22 coincides highly with the typical characteristics of postmodern literature. Catch 22 contains the anti-hero archetype, unusual narrative techniques such as fragmentation, paradox, and unreliable narrator, as well as strong connections to WWII, which was a precursor to the postmodern era and a common topic of postmodern …show more content…
John Yossarian does not have the attributes of idealism, integrity, and courage often associated with the hero archetype. Instead he is cowardly, has very few morals, and does not trust in traditional values. Yossarian has no sense of honor or dignity in his attitude towards the war, but rather seeks to slither away from responsibility because he is so aware of his own mortality. Yossarian often seeks self preservation at the cost of others, especially on his flight missions, during which he avoids his own demise by sending the ranks of other bombardiers into chaos. Like Yossarian, the typical anti-hero of the postmodern era is often cynical, non-conformist, immoral, and often has a strong interest in self preservation. (“Postmodernism”). These qualities make Yossarian the protagonist of what can clearly be classified as a postmodern piece of …show more content…
Postmodern narratives often include fragmentation of the story line, the use of the paradox, and the enigma of the unreliable narrator. (Matterson). Catch 22 is an entirely fragmented story, pieced together with the deftness of a writer skilled in the techniques of postmodern literature. The 50th anniversary edition of Catch 22 contains a photograph of the blotter sheet that Heller used to masterfully weave the convoluted story line of arguably one of the most fragmented plots in the postmodern era. In addition to this, a particularly nasty clause from the book; “Catch 22,” has become its own idiomatic phrase, and is one of the most famous paradoxes in literature, especially the postmodern era. Catch 22 is also very similar to other famous postmodern works because of its highly unreliable narrator. It can be quickly determined by the reader that Yossarian’s perception of reality is highly unlikely, therefore the reader is forced to puzzle out the poignant wisdoms in Yossarian’s interpretation of his world. The fragmentation, paradox, and unreliable narrator of Catch 22 categorize it as a postmodern piece of

Narrative

...Narrative A narrative is a sequence of events that a narrator tells in story form. A narrator is a storyteller of any kind, whether the authorial voice in a novel or a friend telling you about last night’s party. Point of View The point of view is the perspective that a narrative takes toward the events it describes. First-person narration: A narrative in which the narrator tells the story from his/her own point of view and refers to him/herself as “I.” The narrator may be an active participant in the story or just an observer. When the point of view represented is specifically the author’s, and not a fictional narrator’s, the story is autobiographical and may be nonfictional (see Common Literary Forms and Genres below). Third-person narration: The narrator remains outside the story and describes the characters in the story using proper names and the third-person pronouns “he,” “she,” “it,” and “they.” • Omniscient narration: The narrator knows all of the actions, feelings, and motivations of all of the characters. For example, the narrator of Leo Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina seems to know everything about all the characters and events in the story. • Limited omniscient narration: The narrator knows the actions, feelings, and motivations of only one or a handful of characters. For example, the narrator of Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland has full knowledge of only Alice. • Free indirect discourse: The narrator conveys a character’s inner thoughts...

Philippine Folklore

...PHILIPPINE FOLKLORE: ENGKANTO BELIEFS HISTORICAL BACKGROUND: Philippine mythology is derived from Philippine folk literature, which is the traditional oral literature of the Filipino people. This refers to a wide range of material due to the ethnic mix of the Philippines. Each unique ethnic group has its own stories and myths to tell. While the oral and thus changeable aspect of folk literature is an important defining characteristic, much of this oral tradition had been written into a print format. University of the Philippines professor, Damiana Eugenio, classified Philippines Folk Literature into three major groups: folk narratives, folk speech, and folk songs. Folk narratives can either be in prose: the myth, the alamat (legend), and the kuwentong bayan (folktale), or in verse, as in the case of the folk epic. Folk speech includes the bugtong (riddle) and the salawikain (proverbs). Folk songs that can be sub-classified into those that tell a story (folk ballads) are a relative rarity in Philippine folk literature.[1] Before the coming of Christianity, the people of these lands had some kind of religion. For no people however primitive is ever devoid of religion. This religion might have been animism. Like any other religion, this one was a complex of religious phenomena. It consisted of myths, legends, rituals and sacrifices, beliefs in the high gods as well as low; noble concepts and practices as well as degenerate ones; worship and...
