Introduction
Tobacco is a major contributor to deaths from chronic diseases . Tobacco is the world's single most avoidable cause of death and illness. By the end of the twentieth century, cigarettes killed approximately five million people annually worldwide and tobacco is expected to take the lives of nearly one-half of the world's 1.1 billion current users. It is predicted that during the first quarter century, the number of smokers will increase by a half billion, and the number of annual tobacco-related deaths will more than triple to 10 million, with developing countries suffering the greatest impact. The annual death toll is projected to increase several fold in low income countries by the year 2020, and Pakistan is no exception. Although …show more content…

Knowledge and Perceived Factors Related to Smoking Habits of College Students at Selected Departments on a Private School in Iloilo City

...CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION There are more and more people smoking, as they enter college. Aside from looking for ways to quit smoking, researchers have also conducted surveys and numerous studies on what causes most students to start smoking. Furthermore, they’ve observed that student’s habits and behaviour can determine attitudes and reasons why they currently smoke. It is essential to find out more about the reasons and compulsiveness of the college smoker in order to help the smoker cope with situations that cause them to smoke. College students have had lower smoking rates than people the same age who are not in college, but the gap is narrowing. It shrunk from 20.0% in 1980 to 10.0% by 1999 (Halperin, 2002). Surprisingly, most of the people who start smoking in college only smoke socially and when around others. Most of those who exclusively smoke during parties do not even consider themselves as smokers (Kimberly Waters 2010). The rest who were smokers before they entered college are mostly the ones that smoke cigarettes habitually and by themselves (Patterson, F 2004). For many students, smoking is synonymous to college life. Most college students are bound to enjoy partying and found freedom when they reach the legal drinking age. Many develop the habit of smoking when they are drinking. Students may believe that smoking calms them during high-stress situations like class workload, earning money while at school and social difficulties (Ireland, Jae....

Cigerrte Model Discussion

...of finely cut tobacco leaves wrapped in a cylinder of thin paper for smoking. The cigarette is ignited at one end and allowed to smoulder; its smoke is inhaled from the other end, which is held in or to the mouth and in some cases a cigarette holder may be used as well. Most modern manufactured cigarettes are filtered and include reconstituted tobacco and other additives.[2] The term cigarette, as commonly used, refers to a tobacco cigarette but can apply to similar devices containing other herbs, such as cloves or cannabis. A cigarette is distinguished from a cigar by its smaller size, use of processed leaf, and paper wrapping, which is normally white, though other colors are occasionally available. Cigars are typically composed entirely of whole-leaf tobacco. Rates of cigarette smoking vary widely, and have changed considerably over the course of history — since cigarettes were first widely used in the mid-20th century. While rates of smoking have over time leveled off or declined in the developed world, they continue to rise in developing nations.[3][4] Cigarettes like other tobacco products, do carry serious health effects with them. Nicotine, the primary psychoactive chemical in tobacco and therefore cigarettes, is addictive.[5] About half of cigarette smokers die of tobacco-related disease[6] and lose on average 14 years of life.[5] Cigarette use by pregnant women has also been shown to cause birth defects, including mental and physical disabilities.[7] Secondhand...

Tobacco Industry Essay

...abuse of the transparency principle, demonstrating their involvement in deception. The tobacco industry has utilised its economic power, political influence, marketing and manipulation of the media to discredit scientific research and, lobby governments to propagate the sale and distribution of its deadly product (Friedman 2009). According to the World Health Organisation (WHO) the tobacco industry has utilised their power to undermine tobacco control through inappropriate relationships with staff, to discourage initiatives, and using front groups for indirect influence. In a historic judgement, United States (US) District Judge Gladys Kessler, ordered tobacco makers to buy newspaper advertisements detailing adverse health effects in smoking. Justice Kessler in her judgement blamed the tobacco companies of suppressing research, destroying documents, distorting the truth about low-tar and light cigarettes to encourage smokers to switch, instead of quitting, and abused the legal system in order to make profit with disregard to the individual suffering, high health costs and integrity of the US legal system (Schoenberg 2006). WHO cites instances where they employed a multitude of tactics to effect change to the tobacco industry (Chan 2012). Furthermore the tobacco industry makes heavy financial contributions into worldwide social programs to create a positive image under the guise of CSR. A tobacco free...

Michael Jordan

...Michael Jordan " I've missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I've been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I've failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed." Those encouraging words were spoken by Michael Jordan. Michael Jordan was born in Brooklyn, New York, on February 17, 1963. His parents, James and Delores Jordan, moved to Wilmington, North Carolina when he was still a toddler. Jordan has two older brothers, one older sister, and one younger sister. I am going to tell you why Jordan is in fact so famous. To get there he had to overcome tough obstacles but it the end has many great achievements. His love for basketball began when his older brother, Larry, continuously beat him in one-on-one pickup games. As with any challenge Jordan faces, this determined Michael to become a better player. Jordan played basketball for Laney High School in Wilmington, North Carolina. Ironically, Jordan was cut from the varsity team as a sophomore. Instead of giving up after failing to make the team, Jordan used it to spur himself to greater achievements, practicing hour after hour on the court. "Whenever I was working out and got tired and figured I ought to stop, I'd close my eyes and see that list in the locker room without my name on it," Jordan said, "and that usually got me going again." He eventually made the team and led it to the state championship. Jordan then accepted a basketball scholarship...

Transcultural Nursing

...The Role of Transcultural Nursing Nur 502-Theoretical Basis for Nursing Brigette Lander February 20, 2014 Abstract The core of nursing at its simplest application is to cause no harm and restore a person to health when possible. For years now, nurses have been working to close the health disparity gap and become culturally competent for our “melting pot” of minority cultures. Forbes magazine (2010) said only 18% of Americans speak a foreign language, compared to 53% of Europeans and growing numbers of others around the world who communicate in a foreign language. The 2007 census bureau lists 74 countries that have a large percentage of their population who speak English. Language barriers alone can have poor results for nursing care of culturally diverse populations. That being the case, nursing theory developed by nurses in the United States has obvious flaws. This paper will take a multifaceted look at the problems nursing in the United States face when caring for ethnic minorities without the use of culturally competent nursing theory based upon the patients cultural identity. By taking a look at a Pakistani patient, readers will have an understanding of how we unknowingly fail to provide adequate nursing care. The Role of Transcultural Nursing The United States has always deemed this country superior to all other countries in the world in all manners of living with medicine and nursing not being an exception. We have held close to the idea that all other countries...

Culture Heritage Assessment

...Culture, Heritage & Health Culture & Cultural Competency in Health Promotion Culture, Heritage & Health This paper will discuss culture and the cultural characteristics that can be associated with various groups and the affect it can have on one’s health in aspects of health protection, maintenance and restoration. It will also discuss the usefulness of a heritage assessment tool in providing better care for patients. The differences will be viewed based on culture in health protection, maintenance and restoration. A heritage assessment tool is a means to capture a snapshot view of one’s culture/heritage. Culture is defined as “an element of ethnicity, consists of shared patterns of values and behaviors that characterize a particular group. It is “shaped by values, beliefs, norms, and practices that are shared by members of the same cultural group” (Edelman & Mandle, 2006) In examining a patient’s heritage, it can provide an opportunity for better understanding in providing the best care possible for a patient. Madeleine Leininger is the founder of the transcultural nursing theory, but many have followed in her footsteps and built on that initial idea. The Giger and Davidhizar Transcultural Model is another tool that can be used. The model encompasses six cultural phenomena to be assessed: 1) Communication, which encompasses verbal and non-verbal communication and can be seen as the biggest barrier in working with clients from different backgrounds...
