Cell Phone Technology
By: Stephanie Lewis For this paper I chose to write about cell phones as my topic. A cell phone is a portable, non-wired phone that you can carry around with you. The name cell phone comes from cellular network, which is basically a bunch of towers. There are two types of cell phones. A cell phone and a smartphone. A cell phone is a simpler phone. You can receive phone calls and texts on it, but that’s about it. A smartphone is the newer technology. A smartphone allows you to check email, Facebook, Twitter, download games, and much more. Plus smart phones are touch screened and the letters and numbers pop up on the screen. All cell phones are battery powered. Yes this means you have to charge them. There are many different cellular carriers. The most common ones are Verizon, AT&T, Straight Talk, and T-Mobile. Cell phones run off of cell towers and calls are actually made through radio links. The earliest known description, as far as we know, was in a science fiction novel called Space Cadet in 1948. The first actual cell phone did not come out until 1984. This cell phone was the Dyna Tac 8000X. This phone had to be charged after thirty minutes of use. Really. Cell phones have come a long way since then. First, they have changed how we interact with one another and our relationships. Now I didn’t say it was good or bad, you be the judge. I personally think cell phones are corrupting us. Cell phones are good for coordinating with others and keeping us up to date with peers and family. There also good for emergencies like wrecks or flat tires. There really good when your engine starts smoking. But for every good we have a bad. We use cell phones now to text people what we cannot say to their face. The things we are afraid to say or choose not to. Whether it’s a break up text or just mean bullying one. We never know what the other person is

How Cell Phone Technology Has Changed Society

...Just a few decades ago, mobile phones were a luxury that few could afford; large, heavy and awkward devices that were an exclusive form of telephone service, possibly suited for certain industry workers. The mobile phone is now a part of our popular culture. It has vastly changed our lives, and the (now) small, lightweight, highly portable device is viewed as a necessity in most households. One key way mobile phones have had an impact on our lives is in what they were designed for: communication. Mobile phones have allowed us to expand our person-to-person communication from what used to be a simple phone call, to the use of texting, group messaging, video chat, email and social media. But that’s not all they do. Mobile phones allow us to listen to songs, read books, play games, take photos and videos, watch movies, shop online, search for jobs, assist with our banking needs, track our loved ones, look up the closest restaurant to our current location, provide turn-by-turn directions to those restaurants, and so much more! The mobile phone has dramatically changed our culture and continues to do so as the technology evolves. It has freed us from the constraints of a bulky computer, providing information literally at our fingertips (or most recently, on our wrists). Whatever action or knowledge we desire, the mobile phone is most likely capable of providing. Although mobile phones have made our lives easier and more convenient, there are negative aspects associated as...

History of the Cell Phone

...Dismissed in This Age of Technology is the Birth of the Cellular Phone. There are now more wireless devices in use in the United States than there are people. Americans have doubled the amount of Internet data traffic they generate on smartphones, according to the trade group CTIA. The number of mobile devices rose 9 percent in the first six months of 2011 to 327.6 million — more than the 315 million people living in the U.S., Puerto Rico, Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Wireless network data traffic rose 111 percent to 341.2 billion megabytes, during the same period (According to "Number of Cellphones Exceeds U.S. Population: Ctia Trade Group" (2011). Often dismissed in this age of technology is the birth of the cellular phone. Who is accredited with the invention of the cellular phone? Have you ever looked at your cell phone and thought, “HMM I wonder who thought of this?” Hundreds of thousands of people have wondered that very question. Sure several people thought of the idea of being able to walk around with a phone to their ear while they were out shopping, or stranded on the side of the road out of gas, or had a flat tire. There were several companies working on cellular technology at the same time. ”While the technology had been developed, it was not until 1971 that AT&T submitted a request to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) for cellular service. It took more than 10 years for an approval ("Martin Cooper - History of Cell Phone", 2012).” Dr. Martin...

...Cell phone – The incredible invention The invention of something touch every aspect of our lives nowadays. Such devices changed the way we manage, work, and live. A machine that has done all this and more now exists in nearly every business over the world. This incredible invention is the mobile phone. Nowadays, almost everyone has cell phones. It makes communication faster and easier. You can just dial a person’s number and you are talking to them. You can be anywhere and doing anything and yet you can confirm a meeting to business partner, instruct your secretary to do some paperwork or whisper sweet nothings to your loved ones. Cell phones take the need of physically being with the person to be able to connect to them. But exactly how did these gadgets come about? Like any gadget, cell phones evolved over time, and each stage was very interesting. It keeps up with the ongoing changes and demands of the people who use it. The real story started with radio technology. These were used to communicate and are linked on a central data base. The first official cell phone was used by the Swedish police. This was in 1946. They did it by connecting a handheld phone to the telephone network. It was quite similar to the two way radio. During that decade, cell phones were simply not practical. People can make six phone calls and the battery was already dead. The electronics used in cell phones that we see now were first developed in the 1960s. During this time, the technology...

Observation Paper

...Social Interaction among students fails because of cell phones Technology to communicate INTRO: Since the last decade, cell phone use has gained an incredible amount of popularity throughout society attracting audiences of all ages. Technology has significantly improved from what it used to be cell phones especially. The behavior I choose to be is the new way that students interact with schools. Walking to school every day I noticed that students don’t talk to each other anymore. Even when they are together on a table, walking or even during class, there is no more a face to face interaction. Technology has become the new face to interact with one another. The theory on this observation is the social behavior perspective. This theory explains how people interact with the environment. Even when they are in groups dung lunch most of them are on their cell phones. Student's face to face communication is fading by the frequency of texting, not merely in the sense that they speak is becoming abbreviated but the focus associated with talking is becoming distracted and scarce. BACKGROUND: “From a survey 800 American young people between ages 12 and17 regarding their use of mobile phones . The researchers report that half of the teens were sending 50 or more messages a day , with older teenage girls sending an average of 100 messages daily”. (Chin, Jen, Fan, 2013). Cell Phones in School

...CELL PHONES IN SCHOOL Who doesn’t have a cell phone these days? The amazing thing about cell phones is that they are no longer just used for calling or texting. They have become an indispensable multi-tool wonder. Today’s cell phone is cutting-edge technology at your fingertips. With this in mind, should students be permitted to use cell phones in school? I believe they should not just be permitted to use cell phones, they should be required to use them. Cell phones don’t just allow students to stay connected with family and friends, they are also an excellent learning resource, and they encourage the responsible use of technology. To begin with, cell phones make it possible for students to stay in touch with family and friends. A student can call home and ask a family member to bring them a forgotten assignment or lunch money or to come pick them up if they are sick. Also, cell phones allow parents to keep track of their children’s whereabouts before, during, and after school. And, of course, there’s always the possibility of a student needing to contact a parent because of a dangerous situation. Thus, having a cell phone is like having a guardian angel. Students can also connect with friends, but not just because it’s a fun thing to do; my teacher asks us to text or email our friends when they are absent to let them know what’s going on in class and to inform them of any homework. When used responsibly, a cell phone can be an excellent communication...

Cell Phones

...Ariana Galindo Mrs. Sgarioto English 1100-400 9 December 2009 The Invisible Killer What if one were to tell you that your cell phone is slowly killing you every time you use it? Cell phones are a part of everyday life for many people across the world. To many their cell phone is considered the most important item they own. People use cell phones everyday for simple tasks. One example is going to the grocery store, when a person forgets what they were supposed to get for mom they simply call her and ask. Imagine thirty years ago? People could never do something like that. Society today relies a great deal on cell phones and their features, but do not realize the potential danger they are putting their health in. Many people around the world use cell phones every day but are unaware of the fatal outcomes linked to them. To understand how potentially harmful cell phones are society must consider the many people using them. There are three billion cell phone users worldwide and more than 260 million in the United States alone (Mead 422). It is shocking that so many people around the world and U.S are cell phone users and they all may not know how harmful cell phones can be. It is important to discover how this technology of cell phones was created and developed in order to look into how it is affecting humans. In 1974, in response to growing demand for a communication system that was more convenient than two- way radios, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) allocated...

Paradigm Shift

...about cell phone technology and how I think it might change the way we live in 20 years. I will be talking about how cell phones will be used in the medical field by doctors, how we will use them for entertainment purposes, and how we will use them for connecting to our family in everyday life. I will also talk about what might prevent this technology from advancing and become obsolete. Cell phones have come a long way since the first call was made April 3, 1973 by Martin Cooper. The first cell phones were big and bulky, so big that they weighed a little more than 2lbs. They were so big that some were carried in small brief cases, and others looked like a brick with an antenna. The first cell phones were something that the very elite or very wealthy had, because they were very expensive going for about $2500-$3000. The first cell phones only had about 30-45 minutes of talk time and took about 10-12 hours to charge the battery. The old cells phones did one thing and that was to make phone calls very expensive call. They didn’t even store any number/contacts in them. Today it seems that everybody has a cell phone. Today there are more than 5 billion cell phones in use today. The phones today come in just about every GS1140 color and in a bunch of different styles. They are nowhere as expensive as they once were. Today’s cell phones have more memory, computing power and are much faster than the first computers did over forty years ago. I believe that cell phones...

Artifact from 2011

...artifact may change in how it is seen and used. The cell phone as a cultural artifact has come to improve and change various established types of contact in today’s culture (Nielson, 2010). Today the world uses technology in almost everything that it does. Many different types of scholars have advocated the study of technologies as artifacts (Sterne, 2006). The cell phone will be a cultural artifact in its own right. No modern cultural artifact personifies the intellect and the disquieting overindulgence of capitalism as noticeably as the cell phone (Rauch, 2005). It is an item that people work on and the cell phone also works for them. It is used to socialize, idolize, and has many advanced technologies that are used and preformed on them. Consider it a result of social and technical processes. In many urbanized societies like the United States and the rest of the Americas, Europe, and Asia, the cell phone has developed into a scientific experiment or a haven for taxing the confines of technological union. It almost seems a shame to call it a telephone today because it is so much more than that. It can be used as a computer, a gaming tool, still cameras, video cameras, email systems, text messengers, carrier of business data, and so much more (Rauch, 2005). The definition of culture is a shared set of practices, standards, ideals and symbols. Currently the statistics show that more than two billion individuals own cellular phones, yes that is two 2,000,000,000! For the most part...

...PROS OF CELL PHONE IN MODERN SOCIETY | December 10 2011 | | BILL HASBUNE | PROF. ARTHUR CACACE PROS OF CELL PHONES IN MODERN SOCIETY INTRODUCTION: The concept of the cellular phone has been around since 1947; however the technology to do so did not exist until 1973. According to (wikipedia.com) “In December 1947, Douglas H. Ring and W. Rae Young, Bell Labs engineers, proposed hexagonal cells for mobile phones in vehicles. Philip T. Porter, also of Bell Labs, proposed that the cell towers be at the corners of the hexagons rather than the centers and have directional antennas that would transmit/receive in three directions into three adjacent hexagon cells on three different frequencies. At this stage, the technology to implement these ideas did not exist, nor had the frequencies been allocated. Several years would pass before Richard H. Frenkiel and Joel S. Engel of Bell Labs developed the electronics to achieve this in the 1960s” .It was not until in 1973 On April 3, Martin Cooper, a Motorola researcher and executive, made the first analogue mobile phone call using a heavy prototype model. He called Dr. Joel S. Engel of Bell Labs “There was a long race between Motorola and Bell Labs to produce the first portable mobile phone. Cooper is the first inventor named on "Radio telephone system" filed on October 17, 1973 with the US Patent Office and later issued as US Patent 3,906,166. John F. Now, the use of cell phones has gone global. People across the global can be seen using cell phones in many ways that fit their life style. This wireless device is used by both the young and the old. The use is a combination of fashion, work and social outlet. Socialization has linked its existence to the invention of the cell phone. CELL PHONES AND SOCIALIZATION The world as we know it has become technology depended on a hand held device called the cellular phone. Martin Cooper was the person who invented the first handheld cellular device in April, 1973. Ever since, the cellular device now commonly known as a cell phone has taken off to a level no one knew it could reach. Today, cell phones have grown to be a new way of everyday life. Additionally, cell phone usage has fallen into the number one category on the charts in the area of mobile communication and/or social interaction as it has multiple uses such as text messaging and surfing the internet. Cell phone conversations take place in public places causing people to interact whether it is for business or pleasure therefore maintaining the balance of social support (Khattab, 2009). Electronic technology advancements have improved all forms of media devices, the majority of which include laptop and desktop computers, cellular phones and state of the art televisions. The change from analogue to digital is the primary improvement. These technological improvements have changes the way we communicate and our daily lives. Technology has been advancing and changing faster than most ordinary people can keep up with. In the past few decades, media technology has had the most dramatic impact on how we live. Cell phones are in fact hand held computers with cameras, video recorders, applications and programs that allow you to do nearly everything a home computer or laptop can do today.
