The concept of the cellular phone was developed in 1947 which originated from the mobile car phone. The concept of the cellular phone was produced by Bell Laboratories. The first actual cell phone was made in 1973 by Martin Cooper of Motorola and other assisting inventors who used the idea of the car phone and applied the technology necessary to make a portable cell phone possible. It was a DynaTac 8000X which was selling for $3,995. A few years later, in 1991, the Motorola MicroTac Lite was created which cost $1000.
Martin Cooper started Motorola’s research for cellular phones. He was raised in Chicago, and attended the Institute of Technology in Illinois where he obtained a degree in electrical engineering. After working for the navy he also worked for a telecommunications company, and got a job with Motorola in 1954. Cooper worked on the first portable handheld police radio. ...Laura Rough Draft How Cell Phones Have Changed Our Life Socially? (Patricia Seybold) “A lot of people think that the new economy is all about the internet. I think that it's being fueled by the internet - as well as by cell phones, digital assistants, and the like - but that it's really about customers.” Cellphones has changed us socially in many different ways, video chat, and text messaging, and keeping contact through different social networks wirelessly. Cell phones have changed the way people socially interact with each other. Nowadays, anyone anywhere can just pick up their cell phone and call each other at any time of the day or night. (Stewart 1). In the past when there were just house phones around, people could use the excuse “Sorry I wasn’t home to answer your call” but now, with the emerging of cell phones, people will get a hold of you somehow. Cell phones are considered to be your own personal property while house phones are considered to be used for the family. Cell phones depend on satellite and signal, which means anyone, can take their cell phones anywhere they choose, while house phones depend on the wires in the house which limits anyone from using it outside of the house. (Stewart 1). For example, someone could be on their house phone and their little brother could be eavesdropping on the conversation. No one would want that, would they? On the other hand, cell phones are more personal and most of them have Wi-Fi which leads them to be connected...

Literacy Narrative

...college students use Facebook to communicate with friends and browse Instagram to keep up with the times and follow every friend’s lives. Without any argument, the new digital world makes our lives more interesting and colorful. However, I consider technology a double-edged sword, especially cellphone applications. Even though technology enriches our lives from many perspectives, it may sometimes negatively affect us socially and academically. I still recall when I got my first iPhone. It was also my introduction to Instagram. Back in middle school, when I was only 15 years old, my dad gave me an iPhone 3GS as a birthday gift. I was already very excited when I saw the pure white box. However, it shocked me more when I started up the phone. The app store had hundreds of apps, which were classified by categories, such as games, music, and lifestyles. At first, I was not sure if I could use such a great number of functions in such a small phone, but when the Wi-Fi was connected, it felt like opening the door to a new world. Then I started to learn how to use these apps and installed them as soon as possible. Among the hundreds of apps, I found Instagram the most attractive, and it has greatly changed my life. This is an app designed to capture and share moments with our iPhones. With Instagram, I can customize photos and videos with one of several gorgeous and custom-built filter...

Kodak and Fujifilm

...and Core Business of Kodak The company we know today as Kodak was started by an American named George Eastman with his partner Henry Strong in 1881 by producing dry photographic plates. These dry gelatin plates were far superior to the messy wet plate counterpart of the day. The major advantage that dry gelatin plates gave photographers of the time was the fact that they did not require a wet coating right after exposure for them to be developed. Eastman invented and started producing his next evolution of dry plates by evolving his design from using a gelatin coating, to using an emulsion coating. The business evolved from a partnership to a $200,000 corporation with 14 shareholders in 1884. At that same time, the company name was changed to EASTMAN Negative Paper. The next evolutionary step for the company was one year later in 1885. This is when the first transparent photographic film came to market. With this groundbreaking and revolutionary product, EASTMAN Negative Paper opened a wholesale office in London England. The next few years were so good at EASTMAN Negative Paper that they were able to employ a full-time research scientist to help the company in the commercialization of a flexible, transparent film. A few years later in 1888 the name Kodak was born and they adopted and marketed the slogan “You press the button – we do the rest”. The next years for Kodak were filled with the growth of their film product and the cameras that used the film, while they developed...

What Happened to the Beaver

...Steven Darbyshire Professor Gerald Spence English 101 10 February 2013 What Happened to the Beaver? Wally and the Beaver have moved out of the neighborhood and the Kardashians have moved in. The fact that you know who the Kardashians are is a testimonial to the success of mass media marketing. What was once a platform to display the best qualities found in America has steadily become a means to display the worst. A modern day circus sideshow is just one click of your remote control away. What’s even more concerning is that our children can work the remote better than we can. Former President George Bush Jr. once said, “We cannot blame the schools alone for the dismal decline in SAT verbal scores.  When our kids come home from school do they pick up a book or do they sit glued to the tube, watching music videos?  Parents, don't make the mistake of thinking your kid only learns between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.”(qtd. in Alexis 247) .The connection between the desensitized youth of our nation and the American mass media is undeniable. American Children spend more than fifty-three hours a week watching TV or using video games, cellphones, and computers (Kaiser Family Foundation). That is an incredible amount of time for anyone, let alone a child. Sociologists believe that the media is used as a means to educate youth in regards to beliefs and values. Youth are shown that their lives can be better or more exciting by taking part in a certain behavior, which in-turn...

Critical Thinking Essay

...Logic and Critical Thinking April 5, 2016 Abstract Social does have its positive affects on behavior and it is a great tool, however, it does have plenty of negative affects on behavior. A lot of people now days, have lost their sense of personality, sense of humor, and cannot interact the same way because of what social media had done to them. I have seen people basically develop different personalities because of social media. Over social media they act a certain way, but when they are face-to-face they are completely different people. This is largely due to people expressing their feelings and emotions behind their phones, but when it comes time to do so verbally, they cannot. Especially the younger generations, people who are about 24 years and younger are so dependent on social media and the Internet. Before technology was so booming, people were not relying on social media, or interactions behind screens as much. That basically explains why older generations are better at face-to-face verbal conversations compared to the younger generations. The younger generations have been exposed to all of this technology such as advanced social media. They are accustomed to it, they communicate through the Internet, but then when it comes to verbal communications in person, younger generations have lost some of their communication skills. They are more socially awkward now a day. I have seen people who do not know how to communicate, but when it comes to speaking through social media...

... Cultural Studies is an interdisciplinary field that inquires into the meaning and significance of “culture” in its various contemporary forms and considers what is at stake, socially, politically and culturally in its various meanings. It asks, what is culture and how has it changed over time? What is the relation of culture to politics, the economy and structures of power? What is the relevance of culture to our everyday lives? What is popular culture and is it good for us? It addresses these questions not to give definitive answers but to engage the students in critical inquiry into the culture(s) in which they are embedded. As should be evident, LCS 270 is not an introduction to anthropology or global cultures. Rather, it is an introduction to methods of reading, interpreting and creating cultural texts in relation to broad political, ideological and historical contexts. The course understands "text" in the broadest of terms: any form of cultural production that is structured as communication, embodies messages or values, shapes forms of consciousness, and produces effects. LCS 270 will provide conceptual and theoretical tools to analyze a wide range of texts from various media. In the process we will gain new insights into the world around us and question our understanding of ourselves—how our identities as students, employees, citizens, and...

...The Impact of Social Networking Sites In The Identity Formation CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION       During the old days when teens spent hours alone in their rooms or with close friends dancing in front of the mirror, playing outside their houses, trying different outfits and modeling around the corner; trying on different personas in person is out, the web deletes the middle man. Now, there are a variety of online social media applications to enable communication between adolescents. Due to the ego-centric nature of these applications, social networking sites allow adolescents to extend their true personalities to the online world while also adding onto them. The impersonal nature of communicating from behind a computer screen can allow adolescents to create a completely new and unrestrained personality that they would never show in real life. Personal web pages give teens the control to present themselves in whatever way they choose to an actual audience that’s also controllable and far less intimidating than showing up in person to try out a new possible identity (Schmitt et al., 2008).       The Internet has quickly become the most expeditious, central means of communication and access to information so it makes perfect sense that this trend in media would trickle down to impact the lives of youth everywhere. There are numerous reasons why the internet has become the chosen means by which adolescents discover their identity. Adolescents find that the internet and social...

Smartphones Effects

...way we communicate in the 21st century. In the last decade, advances in information technologies have substantially altered the way humans interact. Between email, texting, social networking, instant messaging, and Skype, people now have the resources that would make it possible to spend days or months without coming face-to-face with another person, yet still remain connected with the world. I love my smartphone. I am in awe at just how much phones have advanced in the last 20 years. From the first one that was gigantic in size, then leading to a smaller simple flip phone to these beautiful, amazing slim pieces of hardware that can do more than I could have ever imagined a phone doing. Smartphones are something to be amazed with. Smartphones can certainly make our lives easier for us as we use them for everyday tasks such as communicating, checking our calendars, using as alarm clocks, as calculators, setting reminders and so much more. However, as smartphones keep advancing with new ways to make our lives easier, are they hindering our natural need for social interactions? I have chosen my topic on “Smartphones and their Effect on our Social Interaction.” How often do you see groups of people having coffee together or out at dinner with everyone's faces buried in their phones. Maybe they had nothing to talk about. But could it be, just maybe, we are slowly forgetting how to fill life's awkward silences with polite conversation. Even worse,...

...world using many different types of communications such as social networking sites, cell phones, emails, etc. Carr brings in many different scientific research as well as a couple of personal experiences to show the great change in technology and the internet. The author chose to write The Shallows from an epiphany he had realized, “It (his brain) was hungry. It was demanding to be fed by the net feed...I wanted to check email, click links, do some googling. I wanted to be connected” (Carr 16). The way that technology has changed and developed the internet has made Carr want to stress the fact that although technology is very useful, it can be very harmful to peoples’ brain in a way that it affects a person’s deeper level of thinking. ...INTRODUCTION           ANIME. Whenever I hear this word, I automatically switch my brain from serious and normal mode, to hyperactive and otaku mode.           When I hear people talk about anime, I can't just leave them be, I'll talk with them! This is how freaky and weird I can be. I first started watching anime when I was a kid, but I took it to the next level when I was in high school. Are you wondering what kind of next level this is? I meant next level as, at first, I only watch it when I come across it. But now, I watch it because I want to. It became my fascination. When I learned that an anime is popular and it's really good, I'll watch it. I may leave my schoolwork undone and watch anime first. This became the topic of my blog. Anime.           Hi! I'm a serious, fun, hyperactive, weird and crazy otaku. I'm Lissa Nubla and welcome to my blog! 1 - What is Anime? (The photo above is an example of an anime art/drawing.)           So, what is anime? Why is it popular all around the world, just like here in the Philippines? Does anime affect the way of living of the people that watch or are addicted in watching it?           According to the article What is Anime by Serdar Yegulalp that I read, "The word anime -- pronounced "ah-knee-may" -- is an abbreviation of the word animation. In Japan, the word's used to refer to all animation." Also, according to Katherine Luther, anime is essentially Japanese animation and in fact, the word 'anime' is a shortened...
