What value of PUE should data center managers strive for? Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) is a measure to determine the energy efficiency of a data center. It is the ratio between the energy of the system and the energy of the IT equipment in the data center. TOTAL FACILITY ENERGY PUE = --------------------------------------- IT EQUIPMENT ENERGY It is the ratio of the energy supplied to the entire Data Center and the energy consumed by the IT equipment. Whether to feed the entire plant, we need twice the minimum required to own IT equipment, we have a PUE 2. It allows to calculate the efficiency of the power supply and cooling IT equipment.. A PUE of 2.0 means that for every watt of IT power, an additional watt is consumed to cool and distributes power to the IT equipment. A PUE of 1.0 is considered ideal. A closer PUE of 1.0 means that almost all the energy is used to compute. For use PUE to be effective, should be measured often. If you occasionally makes the information will not be realistic. Ideally, measured as quickly and frequently as every second way. The higher the frequency, the more significant the results. 2. Describe the five methods recommended by Google for reducing power consumption. ...

The Getty Center

...The Getty Center and the Similarity with San Jose City Hall The architecture of the Getty Center by Richard Meier remarked a big achievement in his life. Richard Meier is a famous American architect, and he is well known on the refinements and variations on classic modernism: pure geometry, open space, and attracting light. After Meier graduated from the Cornell University in Ithaca, New York in 1957, he worked for Skidmore, Owings, and Merrill architectural firm for few years. He then started his own career in 1963 (Jodidio). His works have included houses, museums, medical facilities, commercial buildings, major civic commissions, and the city hall (Richard Meier). Meier built The Getty Center in the late 20th century at Los Angeles. From 1985 to 1997, he spent most of his time to work on the Getty architecture. It was an immense project and marked a success in Meier’s career. The Getty Center was his major architecture and inspired him to create many incredible works later including San Jose City Hall. This building was built during the early 21st century and located in the heart of San Jose City. Therefore, this paper is to introduce the speciality and attraction of the Getty Center and its similarities with the City Hall of San Jose. The Getty Center is an accomplishment of the hard work from both Meier and the constructors. The center was constructed on the hilltop site in the Santa Monica Mountains (Architectural Description). The building process...

Pepsi Center Tour

...I am very grateful that I had the opportunity to tour the Pepsi Center with our class, as I have attended multiple Nuggets game every year since 1999 when the building opened. Moreover, I worked for a company called Event Rents several years ago and was able to gain special (albeit very limited) access to sections of the Pepsi Center over the course of that employment. To clarify, Event Rents is a party supply rental company and my job was to deliver/set up tables and chairs for fundraising events that the Pepsi Center was holding. It was great to see even more of the Pepsi Center through this class because I have always been curious about how extensive the building really is, and I was afforded the opportunity to experience even more of their operation on the tour. My personal history aside, I found it extremely insightful to be able to speak with executive management. In this response paper I aim to address key aspects that I found to be insightful during the tour and also during the second half of class when we had the question/answer segment with the management team. Anthony Malandra gave our class the tour of the Pepsi Center. He was extremely knowledgeable and well spoken. Mr. Malandra brought up many points that I thought were astounding. It is remarkable that Pepsi CO. paid $64 million for the naming rights in 1999, which equates to $3.2 million per year over 20 years. This seems like a relatively insignificant amount of money to pay for naming rights. Maybe...

Fairness in Data Center

...1.1 Convergence Data centers use different network fabrics to meet the quality of service require- ments of different workload types. There are three main workload types, namely, general networking traffic, storage traffic, and inter-processor traffic. General net- working traffic is handled by Ethernet, storage traffic is handled by Fibre Channel (FC), and inter-processor traffic is handled by Infiniband (IB). Each network fabric is designed to meet the throughput and latency requirements of its workload. Gen- eral networking traffic is very mixed and includes web traffic along with email and socket applications, so there are few quality of service requirements. Storage traffic between storage devices and servers requires high I/O rates, high capacity and non- disruptive data delivery. Inter-processor traffic requires low latency. General network traffic does not have stringent latency requirements and is not drastically impacted by packet loss. Storage and inter-processor traffic have low latency requirements and require guaranteed delivery of packets. Figure 1-1 shows an example of a converged datacenter. Unfortunately there is a major down-side to having several fabrics in a single data 1Figure 1-1: Converged Datacenter center. ...company implements a tier III data center. By doing this, we will yield a savings of $13 million over the next three years. Implementing a tier III data center is so important, since it will make our data management more efficient. Continuing to use a Tier I system is causes us to experience frequent down time since it is has no safeguard to an unplanned interruption in service. However, the key features of a Tier III data center provides backup in case of power outages and allows for data access when certain paths aren’t accessible. This will reduce downtime by .31%. (Uptime Institute) These multiple independent distribution paths aim to continue system operation in the case of any disruption from unplanned circumstances. They also include multiple cooling distribution paths and are concurrently maintainable (datacenters.com), meaning that system problems could be fixed while the system is still online. Installing a tier III data center will strengthen our data management. After analyzing the figures, it is the clear that we will see a quick return on our investment in a Tier III data center. Installing the data center will take a year to complete and cost us $35 million dollars. Although this might seem like a large investment, we must keep in mind that we lose $14,800 dollars for every minute of downtime. With 10 outages to our ERP system in the last year alone, minimizing the amount of downtime is crucial. After installation of the data center is finished, our company will...

The Central Garden, Getty Center

...Analysis of: The Central Garden, Getty Center By: Robert Irwin The Getty Center is a famous collection museum located in Los Angeles, also the landmark building of Los Angeles. The Central Garden which is the highlight of Getty Center is created by Robert Irwin. In the middle of the water poor, there are three large azalea circles, in which some small circles are connected to each other. The shape of the sculpture is like a triple maze whose color can be changed through the seasonal variation. Since the sculpture in the enormous Central Garden is made of quantities of azaleas, it attracts a number of tourists from all over the world to appreciate its beauty and magnificence. Irwin wants to create the art of light and space, using ephemeral materials such as scrim, lighting and orientation to alter and heighten the viewers' perception of the space in which they encountered his work (artbabble.org). That’s why he chose to use azaleas to set up the sculpture. One reason why Robert Irwin has chosen azaleas to build the sculpture is that the theme of the garden is the harmony of nature. This concept can be reflected well through putting the azaleas models on the surface of the water pool. The other reason is that the azaleas can show the features of the four natural seasons through the change of colors. Irwin began his career as an abstract expressionist; however, by the late 1960s he had moved away from painting to become one of the creators of the art (artbabble.org). Based...

Call Center

...A call center managers can use the statistical report to measure the efficiency and effectiveness of an employee in the areas of response time and service level, number of calls per employee, first call resolution, and transfer rate.  By using the statistical report, it will help show the relationship between their performance and the organization standards or goals and it is easier to visualize.  It can also be utilized by the managers to take necessary corrective actions if needed. The response time and service level can be measured by the monitoring how many calls are answered within how many seconds and total number of calls in a day is being answered.  It is important to monitor the total amount of calls but we must consider the number of calls an employee is answering and should be reported to ensure that individual employee is properly assessed. This will also show if the employees are answering them promptly and not just a handful is answering the calls.    The first call resolution (FCR) measures the individuals’ ability to accomplish the task in one transaction and not transfer the call.  Transfer rate indicates how many calls have been transferred to another party to be handled. Monitoring the number of calls being transferred can identify if there are any performance gaps and training if needed (Reynolds 2012).   Reynolds, Penny (January 2012) The Top 20 Contact Center Metrics for 2012. World Trade Center

...At the time I was a senior in high school and just the week before these events I swore into the Navy. I had a choice of whether to walk with my class at the end of the year or graduate early in December. This tragedy made my decision to graduate early and ship out. This tragedy marks one of the biggest decisions I have made in my life making these tragic events to forever have a deep meaning in my heart. For that reason I have always had a chip on my shoulder about watching any movies or reading any books about these events. So the movie “World Trade Center” directed by Oliver Stone in 2006 is the first and only movie I have seen based on the true events of September 11, 2001.I believe Oliver Stone did a great job at directing this movie. He used great detail throughout the entire movie. While I watched this movie it made me feel like I was right there in New York City, watching this devastating tragedy happen. The movie centers around two police officers, John Mcloughlin and Will Jimeno, who became trapped under the rubble of the towers and were the only survivors out of a group of officers who volunteered to go in and help. We also see the struggles of their families as they are dealing with the crisis of the tragedy hoping for their survival. This was obviously an unexpected attack and the movie depicts the confusion and lack of preparedness for such a tragedy. This lack of preparedness caused a huge hindrance in the rescue attempts. While John and Will were facing death...

Pue Data Center Efficiency Measurement

...CAse Study REPORT PUE DATA CENTER EFFICIENCY MEASUREMENT Introduction One of the metrics used for measuring datacenter efficiency is Power Usage Effectiveness, or PUE. PUE compares the power consumption for the entire facility with the power consumed by the core IT components—servers, storage and network equipment. This ratio illustrates how effectively the power being consumed translates into net compute capacity. Mathematically, the calculation is straightforward: For example, if one watt is being consumed by the servers and one watt is being consumed for the supporting cooling, power back up and other administrative use, the ratio would be 2.0—which is where most datacenters operate. The theoretical ideal PUE is 1.0, where the only energy consumed is for computation. The value of this metric is that it focuses on the non-value added use of power, which in a datacenter is anything that doesn’t compute or store information. PUE = Total Facility Power/ IT Equipment Power Below is an Example to calculate the PUE: Having a facility that uses 100,000 kW of total power of which 80,000 kW is used to power your IT equipment, would generate a PUE of 1.25. The 100,000 kW of total facility power divided by the 80,000 kW of IT power Total Facility Power is defined to be “power as measured at the utility meter”.  IT Equipment Power is defined as “the load associated with all of the IT equipment”...

A Visit to Detention Center

...Jane Ha Dr. Wagner Sociology of Deviance April 11, 2013 A Visit to the Detention Center My visit to the Clark County Juvenile Center provided many helpful and interesting insights on my own study of deviance, specifically on how social power and social context play a significant role on the definition, legalization, and construct of deviance and the deviant being. Based on the information from the two informants I interviewed about their life and the events that led them to the juvenile center, I noticed several patterns and similarities in the family structure and the reference group, whom they interacted with every day. The first similarity was the absence of the father figure; both informants’ parents were divorced and they reported having more communication with their mothers than their dad. My first informant, who was Eddie, 15 years old, simply stated their parents were separated and the informant was living with his mom and sister, with little mentioning of his dad. Similarly, Tyeal, 16 years old, said she rarely saw her dad and even though she added that he tried to be there for her. “…My dad lives in Springfield, he tries to be there for me, but he is an alcoholic and I don’t see him often.” However, the relationships between Eddie and Tyeal’s moms were significantly different. While Eddie seemed to have a good relationship with his mom and his sister; he described his mom as “cool and has a great sense of humor”, the relationship between Tyeal and her...

Internatonal Sports and Entertainment Center

...International Sports and Entertainment Center Rex W. Greene Athens State University The first thing to be said about this consortium’s idea is either the first time anyone has tried this or that no one had been successful at it. Still the idea meets with several problems, starting with getting land secured, getting the facilities built, getting the athletes and coaches to the venues, and getting investors in line for the convention, hotel, restaurants and retail outlets. Securing of land in that area could prove to be difficult. According to the Huntsville/Madison County Chamber of Commerce website, there are no available properties in the area adjoining I-65 and I-565 (Huntsville/Madison County Chamber of Commerce, 2011). Should that hurdle be conquered, the next challenge would be to get the athletes involved. Currently, the biggest Olympic development campuses in the United State are located in Colorado Springs, Colo. and Chula Vista, Calif., although there are also training centers in New York, Alabama and Michigan. It is the responsibility of each sport’s National Governing Body (NGB) to select athletes to train at these centers and to administer all coaching and technical training. The U.S. Olympic Committee (USOC) offers the athletes free from and board, training facilities, sports medicine and sports science testing and analysis. Community Centers, Not Juvenile Detention

...Crux Argument We need to invest in healing our community by building a recreation center instead of a juvenile detention center. Punishing our youth instead of teaching them will only aggravate the social disease, which gangs are a symptom. Opening Hello. Thank you for letting me speak this evening. As I’m sure you all know the city of Seattle has been deliberating over whether or not we should build a new juvenile detention center. This got me thinking, so I started to do a little research about who these kids are and perhaps find a better way of helping them rather than locking them up. I’m not an expert in psychology or sociology. I am merely a concerned citizen who wants to be proud of our city and wants to strengthen our community. Narration Many of these young offenders that would be sent to a juvenile detention center are in gangs, which are a big problem in our city. They can taint the city’s feel and image, and make people cautious about going down certain streets even in broad daylight. According to the Washington State Institute for Public Policy, the number of juveniles sentenced to King County detention centers has increased by 35% since 1980. On the other hand the adult incarceration rate increased by 137% since 1980. (Keep in mind that the juvenile age range is constantly being turned over, while the adult numbers are compounded.) The numbers of juvenile re-offenders as adults is hard to determine exactly due to anonymity, but they do seem to correlate...
