The book starts out as Cera Singer sits down to write her memoir that details the events of her life back when she was sixteen. Cera begins explaining how life was for her living in the Deep South, Alabama to be precise. She talks about her friends and family, being relatively poor, and wanting to fix up a Trans Am her step daddy had given her. Soon, Cera gets a summer job working at a pizzeria and that’s going okay until her scumbag boss makes a pass at her. After losing her job, luck only gets worse for Cera and her family when her Step Daddy Cade loses his and then gets arrested. But as troubles have a tendency to build Cera and her parents then come to find out that Cera’s Grandmother who lives up in New York State has passed. As the bills pile up, eventually the bank has to do what a bank does and they foreclose on Cera’s home given them a month to leave the property. Then, just when things are at their worst a letter arrives from Cera’s Grandmother Lyanna’s estate lawyers and it informs her parents that her mother is to inherit all of Cera’s Grandmother Lyanna’s assets, a huge home, car, and cash.
