Change At Sierra College’s outdoor amphitheater for all to hear, The Generals were performing music at noon on Tuesday, October 4, at the event Change for Change. Approximately twenty people listened and watched the two person band, filtering in and out. The band consisted of a man in his thirties playing the guitar and singing lead vocals, while another man in his twenties played the drums and included some background vocals. It was a cloudy and comfortable day, allowing the outdoor amphitheater to be a great place for them to play loudly. The concert was free and many people only listened for a minute as they passed through on their way to class. However, the band did ask for donations for The World Impact Club in between songs. The band was unfamiliar to most people, yet people were intrigued by the uplifting and alternative style songs. With the use of amplifiers and their music, The Generals put on a surprisingly engaging performance through the use of various media and sent a message of hope and change. The band’s main media were from the instruments and voice that they used. The leader of the band played an electric guitar and sang into a microphone. When I was walking to the event from my car in the main parking lot, I could hear the music when I was about 200 meters away. I was quite surprised that the band was playing so loud because it was on a college campus, which may be distracting to school and those studying. However, when I sat down and began to enjoy the music it did not seem excessively loud, which was a beneficial aspect of the outdoor amphitheater. The drummer was very experienced and he kept a consistent rhythm and was noticeably talented, especially for a band that is not very popular. Both artists were dressed casually and seemed to show some level of sophistication and maturity that most bands lack. The style that was preformed was perfect because, although there were only twenty people, everyone was enjoying their lunches and having a good time listening to music. After listening for a few minutes, I was surprised that not many people were listening to the music. However, had I not had to do this assignment, I probably would have been eating in the cafeteria too. The music was not overwhelming, as many bands attempt to be, but provided a comfortable and relaxing environment that also was expressing a message to the audience. The message that was being produced was that people should care about others and help make an impact. The Impact Club was sponsoring the event, and its main goals are to promote education, nutrition and advocacy. The event had pictures of children in need in Africa right in front of the artists. Also, a poster board showed the mission of the club, to “make a difference” by supporting a Tanzanian school by getting $12,000 raised. Randomly throughout the day, two college students would walk around with buckets, asking for donations of at least $1. These guys would allow people to sit down for a couple of minutes and then, once the onlooker had been enjoying the show, bring the buckets by. It seemed as though the club wanted people to understand the environment before they would come by to ask for money, which was the right thing to do. The lyrics that were being sung also were communicating a message that paralleled the message of the event. The chorus of the first song said, “Dreams come true, I found you”, and the second song had verses of determination, such as “no mountain too high, or road too long”. The third song was about choosing what was right, and its lyrics said, “I choose love over hate”. The songs all contained uplifting meanings that were supposed to encourage people to do the right thing, to make an impact. The Impact Club put this event on because it wanted to make a difference in the world. Even though only 20 or so people were in attendance at any given time, everyone in the audience was involved in what was going on. The band produced uplifting music that was very enjoyable, while the club displayed posters and their mission of changing the world throughout the environment. Together these two things gave people an outstanding performance and gave them the opportunity to make a difference, which they did for me.

...Understanding and Coping with Change Understanding and Coping with Change Change can be difficult for any individual or organization and it can be seen as a threat. An individual that can plan and implement change is better prepared to effectively meet their future stated goals and can move forward in a positive movement when embracing the need for change. “Is change, changing?”(Rowland & Higgs, 2008). A company can then diagnose, plan, and implement changes to see improvements. To understand change and learning to cope with change we will use a company as example, the name of the company is Sunny Side Resort. We will diagnose the need for change and present a plan to transform the organization using Kotter’s 8-step approach. Sunny Side Fulfillment (SSF) is a company that is located in South Beach, Miami. It was founded in 1989 by Traci Sizemore, Chief Executive Officer and Dave Sizemore, President. The vision of the company is building a world-class ecommerce services company with a global reach SSF business model is to service their clients’ needs, from start to finish. ...Change is inevitable in life. Everything around us is changing with the passage of time. Each individual get a change to bring a change in his life. Some welcome it with a smile as a challenge while other refute it and stick to their stereo type routines. The people who are in favor of bringing changes in their life argue that change is very important to break the monotony of life. They further argue that an order to swiftly excel in your career and financial status, change is inevitable. All the advancements in technology have been achieved through bringing a change. From the marketing point of view, in order to boost the sale of a product, the best way is to bring the changes in the shape and specifications. So change, such as in your company or professional status, brings the diversity, flexibility and financial growth in the life on an individual. On the contrary, those who are not in favour of changing their lives, feel satisfied in their current circumstances. They feel that in order to grow in their own profession and to gain a high position in their career, it is important to be consistent with their current job. They argue that to build a strong relationship one may need patience rather than giving up easily and moving on. So as per them, life is the name of stability and persistence and as a result they opt for that. In my personal opinion change is the law of nature. The group of people who deny change are afraid of the after effects and not ready to except...

Change

...Introduction To give a wider scope the reader must grasp of what management change is, Moran and Brightman (2001) see it as the continual process of renewing a business’s direction to meet the changing needs of internal and external customers efficiently and effectively. To add on this the culture of an organisation is seen as the underlying values, expectations and assumptions (Cameron, 2008). This highlights how deeply embedded the concept of culture is and how it has a major influence on a business (Deal and Kennedy, 2000). (ii) To change to a role culture CastleHomes will have to use initiatives that bring about the change efficiently and effectively. To do this two models will be applied to the organisation, Lewin’s three step model of change (1951) and Dobson’s four-step approach to culture change (1998). By applying these two models it should provide the business with a sound understanding on which initiatives to implement. Lewin’s three step model of Unfreeze, Change and Refreeze was one of the earliest pieces of work on planned change and is still widely applied today (Myers et al, 2012). Another reason for using this model is because it’s practical nature as it’s easy to understand when looking at complex issues surrounding change (Levasseur, 2001); though many theorists see this model as outdated and only relevant to small scale changes in stable environments (Burns, 2004). To ensure the initiatives are relevant Dobson’s model will also be implemented...

...Organizational Change in Today's Business “Developing Organization Change Champions” an article written by D.D. Warrick developed an insight on how organizational change should take place. Throughout the article Warrick explains how individuals can develop, train, and utilize change champions or professionals at conducting change and developing procedures that will allow them to persevere through these changes. Throughout article, the reasons that organizations should change is also a topic of discussion and is done so to validate comprehension of the change process, and the stages associated with it. He also discusses how they fail and optimize their potential at success during the changing process. In nearly every organization that exists globally, there are changes in which they faced consistently with the operation of business. These changes occur within their “missions, strategies, goals, cultures, processes, systems, practices, technologies, who owns them, and who they own, and in some cases even their core values” (Warrick, 2009). It is imperative for them to change, so that they may keep up with the concept of organizational change that faces them and allows them to be successful. These changes are present at all levels of the organization. Typically, changes reflect in more ways than one can imagine. “Organizational change is the process by which organizations move from their present state to some desired future state to increase their effectiveness” (Jones, 2010)...

Organizational Change

...Organizational Change Name: Institution: Instructor: Course: Date: Abstract The report looks at the process of change in organizations. It examines the stakeholders and how a change which in this case is downsizing would affect them. The paper also looks at how downsizing affects people with interests in a company, that is to say the stake holders who are adversely affected. The reasons why change in most cases results in these effects is examined. Then the report also looks at the methodology that could be used in the implementing changes in the organization in a managerial level so as to minimize the re-occurrence of the effects that are not good to the business and those with vested interests. Introduction There are many ways in which a business can be affected by change. Some examples of changes that are made in the organization include downsizing; changes made in the structure of the organization, and at times even change in processes carried out in the organization. All these changes are usually necessary to enable the organization or business adapt to some of the changes in its operating environment (Kreitner, 2008). All these can be summarized using one word, ‘restructuring’. It could also be referred to as re-engineering. In order to be successful in today’s competitive world, an organization has to embrace this important aspect in its day to day operations. This change can be for the whole company, or can only involve certain parts of company. Restructuring...

As the World Changes

...As The World Changes As The World Changes There are countless reasons that people may give when they are asked why they have changed. Some people reshape who they are to try to fit in with society. Others may transform because they are trying to cope or to hide some form of personal hurt or pain. While others believe that reinventing who they are could give them all the things they feel their life is missing. Marriage, career development, pregnancy, and maturity in age can also provoke a shift in individuals, who they are and how they live their everyday life. Those who are motivated to change due to pain have reached a breaking point. They choose to alter themselves hoping that the pain they feel will go away. People experience pain in many different ways, and each individual’s breaking point, can redefine who they are. Emotional hurt can have an enormous impact on a person’s drive to modify their life. When loved ones are lost, it can create a chain reaction of reconstruction in those family members that are closest to the deceased. Whatever, the cause of the pain there has to be an adjustment which constitutes change. Society can cause an abundance of insecurity in people, if a woman, who is overly insecure about her weight, watches a commercial with a petite woman advertising a fancy gown or swimwear she may switch what she eats and drinks just so she can become the size that society believes is...

Life Change

...My Life Changing Call: Amy Jo Sanchez Beckfield College Abstract My Life Changing Call Let me start by telling you that it has been extremely difficult to do a career change into something that has no real adrenalin rush for me. I have ADD and the adrenalin is what hooked me when I started in EMS over 17 years ago. I fell in love immediately and still love it to this day. The feeling you get helping people in some of the worst times of their lives even in the end of their life is unexplainable. It sometimes makes you question what there is after death. It’s one of those things that you don’t talk about in EMS or your own family. I have never told anyone that I question if there is an afterlife after death. All I know is that death is inevitable. Let me begin by telling you about the call that changed my life and pushed me to make a career change. It was a beautiful morning on March 21st 2013 and my partner and I had just delivered a patient to the emergency room and got an alarm for a new call, one that would forever change my life. The alarm came in as I was putting my stretcher into the back of my ambulance it was for a baby shot in the head. Now in 911 or emergency medicine not every call comes across as the truth, but little did I know that I would forever remember every detail of this call I was about to go on. This beautiful morning was about to become my worst morning one that I feel stole my soul and my career. They sent the alarm to us twice...

Change Management

...Change Management Models MGMT310 - 1403B - 03   Conforming to change is an important part of a life of an organization. Without evolving along with the fast changing of our environment, an organization will diminish. When developing strategies for change, there are two possible change models that business leaders can use. Two change management models that can assist in keeping an organization alive are Kurt Lewin and John Kotter’s model for change. Psychologist Kurt Lewin developed a change management model that consisted of three steps. The three-stage processes are: unfreezing, changing, and freezing. In the unfreezing state, Lewin understood that people are afraid of change because they feel safe in their no changing environment, therefore, resist change. The unfreezing state is the stage of motivating people to want and understand that there is a need for change. The first stage helps followers “thaw” and become understanding through motivation (Prentice Hall, 2012). After the unfreezing stage, the changing stage is put into action. People begin to do things differently in this stage. They begin to see why and how the changes benefit them. Time and communication is an important part in the change environment because people need time to understand the changes and they need to be motivated in order to feel like they are a part of the change (Prentice Hall, 2012). When the changes are taken into consideration and are being embraced in the working environment, the company...

Planning Changes

...Planning changes: Why is it important? ▪ Identifying the final aim of the change and communicating it effectively ▪ monitoring the progress of the changes (sponsor/agent and targets) ▪ understanding the change (targets) ▪ identifying lack of infrastructures/staff/training to support changes ▪ setting achievable time frames and goals ▪ setting roles and responsibilities ▪ motivating people within the change ▪ increasing efficiency ▪ increasing transparency Issues to consider: “culture and behavior” ▪ Change begins before final aim is identified or sponsor identified (e.g. lost of contract) ▪ Emotional reactions to changes are difficult to plan and time should be given to manage those reactions effectively. Emotional reactions maybe caused by: 1. Company goal vs group goals or individual goals and reactions are not easy to plan 2. Effect of the change on the private sphere of individuals (e.g. relocation). Time should be given to adjust to the changes or appropriate financial support when applicable ▪ Diverse background/work conditions/culture require different planning and communication strategies ▪ Flexible and critical tasks of the change have to be identified, reviewed and changed when possible How to ensure a smooth transition ▪ Meet with senior staff involved in the change to discuss all aspects of it to try to ensure nothing is left...

Organizational Change

...In every organization, change is a must. Things change, people change, technology changes, and organizations and businesses change. Everything from small, mom and pop businesses to huge organizations need change to stay on top of things and successful. It’s necessary to keep the customers or clientele happy. I worked for Lowe’s Home Improvement for four years, and in those four years many things were changed within the company from a corporate level down to the store level. Most of the time, things would be on a trial basis and there would be a test store to try out these new ideas before the changes were rolled out in every store. The store that I worked for was the one that was usually the test store. Being an employee in the test store, it could be very stressful to come to work and know that things would be changing. Every time we got settled in with something different, a new change came and brought its own set of challenges along with it. I was in a leadership position and having to learn about these new changes and seeing the management excited about would always motivate me to share the change with the employees under me, and then a few months later, if the changes didn’t work out as well as corporate had hoped, then they would take it away and it would be discouraging. I worked on the front end of the store, so most of the time when these changes would happen; they would affect us because it was usually something to do with checking out the customers and our point of...

Implementing Change

...Why Organizational Change Candis Burton MGT/380 November 14, 2012 Tangelia Frazier Why Organizational Change When a business first enters into the market the organization develops goals and missions that they have set forth to achieve. However, during the lifetime of the company there are many internal and external factors that can affect the company from reaching their goals and achieving their set forth mission. Most organizations make changes daily in order to guarantee the services or products provided fit the needs of the customers. Dollar Tree is a company is well known for their prices. If the company decided to undergo a significant reorganization there would be changes the entire organization would have to adapt to. In the reorganization process there are stages in the transition curve that the organization has to follow. When managing change it's important to recognize that transition is an individual reaction. The role of managers is to help others through to new beginnings whilst maintaining the level of activity or service. Here are some points to bear in mind when assessing where people are on the transition curve. The first stage in the process is called the endings. Staff may acutely feel the loss of the familiarity and security they felt in the organization before this and other changes occurred. They are likely to be trying to reconcile or accept the fact that things will now be different from the way they have been. They will...

Changes of Lifestyle

...Changes of Lifestyle It is hard to understand and obey any law forcing individuals to change their way of living. In the book Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi there were many changes in the way of living during the Revolution. Persepolis was written based on Satrapi’s childhood memories through her eyes as a child. Satrapi explains the difficulties she had changing her usual ways and getting in trouble for expressing herself with the things she liked. It was not just Satrapi who faced changes but other families as well and even the society as a whole. Although there were many changes in the lifestyles of many, there was a great impact on the military, women, education and in many adolescences. To begin, the military began recruiting teenage boys at age fourteen living in poverty which created a change in the military. This was a change within the military because at fourteen one is still considered immature and has not mentally or physically developed to the fullest. To join the military one should be mature and fully grown. Many of these fourteen year old boys were tricked into joining the military. They were given a key painted gold representing value. They were told if they were fortunate enough to die, the golden key would open the door into heaven. They were promised a better life than the one they were living in the lower class. As Mrs. Nasrine, Satrapi’s maid, explains, “‘They told him that in paradise there will be plenty of food, women and houses...

The Change in Literacy

...Jake Andryshak Jerry Tartaglia English 101 November 12, 2013 The Decline in Literacy The decline of literacy has been something that has changed over time. Words used in the past may not show up in today’s vocabulary. Historical events will impact the writings and the verbal words during that time. Literacy will change according to time eras and with what is going on during that time. Through history the way people spoke to one another and the way they wrote has changed. During the civil war era, people wrote differently. They used a different assortment of words. People back then had a diverse vocabulary that people today do not use. The language and literacy has been molded as each decade past. Events in history have impacted the way people speak and write to one another. During the 50s America was coming off of the Great Depression. Times were pretty great, it seemed like there was an abundance of money. People were living the American Dream. This was the era of the movie “Grease”, with John Travolta. People had their clicks like they do today but each click resembled a gang. People had different words that meant the same thing, for example the word ‘chick’ was used in place of girl. The word ‘bread’ is not the eatable cooked wheat, it actually meant money in the 1950s. In the 1960s, during the decade of the hippies, the meanings of some words changed. When someone said ‘that’s boss’, it meant something that was the best of or something that was great. During the...
