Organizational Change in Today's Business
“Developing Organization Change Champions” an article written by D.D. Warrick developed an insight on how organizational change should take place. Throughout the article Warrick explains how individuals can develop, train, and utilize change champions or professionals at conducting change and developing procedures that will allow them to persevere through these changes. Throughout article, the reasons that organizations should change is also a topic of discussion and is done so to validate comprehension of the change process, and the stages associated with it. He also discusses how they fail and optimize their potential at success during the changing process.
In nearly every organization that exists globally, there are changes in which they faced consistently with the operation of business. These changes occur within their “missions, strategies, goals, cultures, processes, systems, practices, technologies, who owns them, and who they own, and in some cases even their core values” (Warrick, 2009). It is imperative for them to change, so that they may keep up with the concept of organizational change that faces them and allows them to be successful. These changes are present at all levels of the organization. Typically, changes reflect in more ways than one can imagine.
“Organizational change is the process by which organizations move from their present state to some desired future state to increase their effectiveness” (Jones, 2010). The changes can be “flattening their organization, downsizing, restructuring, redefining roles of people from top to bottom, and struggling to keep up with constantly changing technology” ( Warrick, 2009). ...Change At Sierra College’s outdoor amphitheater for all to hear, The Generals were performing music at noon on Tuesday, October 4, at the event Change for Change. Approximately twenty people listened and watched the two person band, filtering in and out. The band consisted of a man in his thirties playing the guitar and singing lead vocals, while another man in his twenties played the drums and included some background vocals. It was a cloudy and comfortable day, allowing the outdoor amphitheater to be a great place for them to play loudly. ... Fortunately in my career, I have come across some exceptional mentors. The majority of them in one shape or form will always state that if you or your company does not embrace change, you will never be in first place. Society is constantly evolving and so is healthcare in general. In order to provide excellent healthcare, the industry must constantly evolve and those within the industry must be willing to accept change. New technology and healthcare delivery constantly changes for the benefit of the patient and the healthcare provider. Those individuals that try to fight change will generally lose and as a result the patient loses. ...Change. Some thrive on it, while others resist it. Why is it that two individuals can look at the same thing and think totally different thoughts? Half full, half empty so to speak. Some see possibilities and some see consequences, some see change as essential, while others fear the worst. Reluctance seems to predominate wherever changes require movement into the unknown, and is a very natural reaction. Proposed change signifies the loss of something familiar or comfortable, and it takes time to work through this process, but it's also important to move people forward and get them involved in the new change and working toward positive goals for the future. Understanding of resistance to change, most people are likely to put up several barriers to change, often without recognizing that they are forming these barriers. Emotion is always a part of change, both positive and negative. Attitudes towards change result from a complex interplay of emotions and cognitive processes. Because of this complexity everyone reacts to change differently. On the positive side, change is seen as a kin to opportunity, rejuvenation, progress, innovation, and growth. But just as legitimately, change can also be seen as a kin to instability, upheaval, unpredictability, threat, and disorientation. ...An evocative personal accomplishment was the way in which I dealt with profound disappointment. My first full-time job was an unsympathetic wakeup call. I had just graduated with a degree from one of the top engineering schools in the country, and possessed a naïve assurance in my abilities. These steps are based on the quasi-stationary equilibrium theory by Kurt Lewin. This theory looks at the system involved with the change and focuses the interventions of the parts of the system: the individual, group, or organization (Schein, 2010). When discussing the Concord Bookshop situation, none of the change process was completed correctly. The company failed because change was not implemented well. The unfreezing part of the change process seems to be the hardest. It requires the change agents to create disconfirmation of the participants (Schein, 2010). In regards to the Bookshop, the employees never understood that their environment was not creating profit. When unfreezing, the way the change agent involves the employees so that they understand the need for change is vital. We regret not hindering change while the chance is there – and once we realise its poison to us, it’s too late to turn back. I think we habitually – yet completely subconsciously are ignorant to it, and one day we actually wake up only to find that things aren’t the same as yesterday, but different in ways we just can’t seem to grasp. Their velvet screams of laughter filled the somewhat tepid autumn afternoon- only just warm enough for a joyous mood stay. The plump apple trees swallowed the back fence and a shiny modernistic swing set hid in-between, happily making the back yard look like what I tried to create - a children’s nirvana. As the friendly, gleaming sun highlighted the sunburnt shoulders and grubby knees, it made one thing in particular very evident; the radiance of their smiles – brighter than the sun could even strive to shine… and right in that moment, the court cases and the distressing legal meetings all gushed away, in an instance so fast it made me blurry – not that the feeling stayed around for too long.
