Chapter 14 Summary
The New Meaning of Educational Change by Michael Fullan

Professional Development is not Professional Learning
• Professional learning is not about workshops and courses
• 30% concerns standards and qualifications
• 70% concerns whether teachers are learning every day, continuously improving their craft collectively

Policies and practices that stand a chance of changing a dysfunctional culture within schools must focus on …
• Standards of new practice and opportunities to learn new ways of working together.
• Opportunities for people to argue new ideas into their own normative belief system

Standards of Practice

National Board of Professional Teacher Standards in the US in 1987 (www.nbpts.org)
• Developed standards and assessment procedures in 30 subject matter disciplines organized around five major propositions
1. Teachers are committed to students and their learning.
2. Teachers know the subject they teach and how to teach those subjects to students
3. Teachers are responsible for managing and monitoring students learning.
4. Teachers think systematically about their practice and learn from experience.
5. Teachers are members of learning communities.
• currently over 100,000 teachers have been certified and reports of teachers feeling that the process of analyzing their own and their students work enhanced their effectiveness in the classroom

Implementation of standards ultimately leads to re-certification standards with performance based compensa-tion. Those in favor say that that it is fairer to reward teachers who perform well rather than paying all teachers equally. Others say that that this is a business model designed for manufacturing industries and are inappropriate for a system that does not produce tangible products.

Certification strategies focus on improving individual performance and not on the culture

...Chapter 14 Summary/ Definition Retailing includes all of the activities involved in selling goods or services directly to final consumers for personal, nonbusiness use. Retailer or retail store is any business enterprise whose sales volume comes primarily from retailing. Retail life cycle retail-store types pass through stages of growth and decline that can be described as the Wheel-of-retailing hypothesis, after conventional retail stores increase their services and raise their prices to cover the cost. These higher costs provide an opportunity for new retail forms to emerge with lower prices and less service 1. Self-service: The cornerstone of all discount stores, self-service allows customers to save money by carrying out their own locate-compare-select process. 2. Self-selection: Customers find their own goods, although they can ask for help. 3. Limited service: These retailers carry more shopping goods, and customers need more information and assistance. The stores also offer services (such as credit and merchandise-return privileges). 4. Full service: Salespeople are ready to assist in the locate-compare-select process. The high staffing cost, the higher proportion of specialty goods, slower-moving items, and more services, add up to high-cost retailing. Corporate retailing Such organizations achieve economies of scale and have greater purchasing power, wider brand recognition, and better-trained employees. Target Market A retailer’s most important...

Chapter 1-14 Summary

...Summary Chapter 1 John speaks about how his father would speak and tell a story about this old man who comes to salvation later in life and says a phrase that John will always remember “I’ve wasted it !” (12, Piper) He contemplates the questions of “what would it mean to waste my life?” and “what is the opposite of not wasting my life?” (13, Piper)He speaks about how C. S. Lewis helped give him a “realness of things” (19, Piper) The Last section of the chapter talks about how God guided him to the career path of seminary through mononucleosis. He wanted to go to be a medical doctor but then came down with mono and missed too many days of class. While on bed rest he heard a sermon from a man named John Ockenga. Piper said after hearing the sermon, “I lay there feeling as if I had awakened from a dream, and knew, now that I was awake, what I was to do.” (21, Piper) Chapter 2 John was not sure what it meant “to be a minister of the Word, he was not sure of where to go next.” (23, Piper) He did not know what is meant to be a pastor and his wife did not know what to expect if she was a pastor’s wife. So he decided it meant seminary, and he would try to understand and handle...

The Outsiders

...November 14, 2012 Summary: Chapter 8 We couldn’t get along without him. We needed Johnny as much as he needed the gang. And for the same reason. Two-Bit and Ponyboy go to see Johnny and Dally in the hospital. Johnny, weak and pale, whispers that he would like Ponyboy to finish reading Gone with the Wind to him. His mother shows up to visit, but she is a mean-spirited, nagging woman and Johnny refuses to see her. As Ponyboy and Two-Bit leave, she accosts them and blames them for Johnny’s condition, and Two-Bit insults her. Dally is recovering nicely in the hospital, and for the first time ever Ponyboy feels warmly toward Dally. Dally says that Tim Shepard, the leader of another gang of greasers, came in to talk about the rumble. Dally asks for Two-Bit’s black-handled switchblade, and Two-Bit gladly hands over his prized possession without even asking why Dally needs it. On the way home, Ponyboy and Two-Bit see Cherry Valance in her Corvette. She says that the Socs have agreed to fight with no weapons. Ponyboy asks her to go see Johnny, but she says she cannot because Johnny killed Bob. She says that Bob had a sweet side and was only violent when drunk, as he was when he beat up Johnny. Ponyboy calls her a traitor, but he quickly forgives her. He asks her if she can see the sunset on the West Side, and when she says she can, he tells her to remember that he can see it on the East Side too Chapters 11–12 Danielle Nowak Ms. Adams English 8a November 14, 2012 Summary: chapter 9 Stay...

...structures, presenting a formal method of describing syntax and introducing approaches to lexical and syntatic analysis. The tenth edition evolved from the ninth through several different kinds of changes. To maintain the currency of the material, some of the discussion of older programming languages has been removed. For example, the description of COBOL’s record operations was removed from Chapter 6 and that of Fortran’s Do statement was removed from Chapter 8. Likewise, the description of Ada’s generic subprograms was removed from Chapter 9 and the discussion of Ada’s asynchronous message passing was removed from Chapter 13. On the other hand, a section on closures, a section on calling subprograms indirectly, and a section on generic functions in F# were added to Chapter 9; sections on Objective-C were added to Chapters 11 and 12; a section on concurrency in functional programming languages was added to Chapter 13; a section on C# event handling was added to Chapter 14;. a section on F# and a section on support for functional programming in primarily imperative languages were added to Chapter 15. In some cases, material has been moved....
