hy did Scrooge agree with the board members? How were they going to make the payments? How will he face poverty again? Cratchit hoped Scrooge had a plan, because he didn’t. Although Christmas was two days away, it seemed so far now that the meeting had took place. Worries had replaced the joy and happiness in his heart. He was extremely tired from his day at work, and all he wanted to do was lie in bed. When he got home, he went straight to bed and immediately fell asleep. After a few hours, his wife woke him up. “Bob, you haven’t eaten. Come eat dinner,” Mrs. Cratchit said. “If you insist,” Cratchit replied. They ate together with their children as a family, and Bob Cratchit told them about his current situation with the financial problems. …show more content…
He says it's especially important to during the Christmas season.” “Well, how do you suppose you’re going to make those payments?” asked Mrs. Cratchit. “I have no idea. Mr. Scrooge just told me not to worry and to hope for the best.” “How is hoping going to get you out of your situation?” asked Martha. “I’m as confused as you are, Martha. However, I just have to trust Scrooge and hope for the best, like he said.” replied Cratchit. That was the end of their discussion. The rest of the dinner was silent. The whole family knew what the consequence was if the payments could not be made. They would end up back in poverty again, right where they started. They couldn’t afford to lose everything they had, right when Tiny Tim was recovering. Bob Cratchit went to bed, silent as a stone. He stayed up all night worrying before he fell into a deep sleep. Bob Cratchit awoke early in the morning, earlier than the day before. It was Christmas Eve. They had a day to pay of their loans. He got ready quickly and headed to the office building. When he walked through the door, however, Scrooge wasn’t there. About 10 minutes passed before the bells jingled and Scrooge walked through the door. “Mr. Scrooge!” said Cratchit. “May I ask why are you late

...your books, water your plants, or sharpen your pencils for the fifth time. If this situation sounds familiar, you may find it reassuring to know that many professionals undergo these same strange compulsions before they begin writing. Jean Kerr, author of Please Don’t Eat the Daisies, admits that she often finds herself in the kitchen reading soup-can labels—or anything—in order to prolong the moments before taking pen in hand. John C. Calhoun, vice president under Andrew Jackson, insisted he had to plow his fields before he could write, and Joseph Conrad, author of Lord Jim and other novels, is said to have cried on occasion from the sheer dread of sitting down to compose his stories. To spare you as much hand-wringing as possible, this chapter presents some practical suggestions on how to begin writing your short essay. Although all writers must find the methods that work best for them, you may find some of the following ideas helpful. But no matter how you actually begin putting words on paper, it is absolutely essential to maintain two basic ideas concerning your writing task. Before you write a single sentence, you should always remind yourself that 1. You have some valuable ideas to tell your reader, and 2. More than anything, you want to communicate those ideas to your reader. These reminders may seem obvious to you, but without a solid commitment to your own opinions as well as to your reader, your prose will be lifeless and boring. If you don’t care about your subject,...

...A Preface of Quotations Whoever desires for his writings or himself, what none can reasonably condemn, the favor of mankind, must add grace to strength, and make his thoughts agreeable as well as useful. Many complain of neglect who never tried to attract regard. It cannot be expected that the patrons of science or virtue should be solicitous to discover excellencies which they who possess them shade and disguise. Few have abilities so much needed by the rest of the world as to be caressed on their own terms; and he that will not condescend to recommend himself by external embellishments must submit to the fate of just sentiments meanly expressed, and be ridiculed and forgotten before he is understood. --Samuel Johnson Men must be taught as if you taught them not; And things unknown propos'd as things forgot. --Alexander Pope Style in painting is the same as in writing, a power over materials, whether words or colors, by which conceptions or sentiments are conveyed. --Sir Joshua Reynolds Whereas, if after some preparatory grounds of speech by their certain forms got into memory, they were led to the praxis thereof in some chosen short book lessoned thoroughly to them, they might then forthwith proceed to learn the substance of good things, and arts in due order, which would bring the whole language quickly into their power. --John Milton Introduction Good writing depends upon more than making a collection of statements worthy of belief, because writing is intended to...

Now you’re ready to master the words on the High-Frequency and Hot Prospects Word Lists. First, check off those words you think you know. Then, look up all the words and their definitions in our 3,500 Basic Word List. Pay particular attention to the words you thought you knew. See whether any of them are defined in an unexpected way. If they are, make a special note of them. As you know from the preceding chapters, SAT often stumps students with questions based on unfamiliar meanings of familiar-looking words. Use the flash cards in the back of this book and create others for the words you want to master. Work up memory tricks to help yourself remember them. Try using them on your parents and friends. Not only will going over these high-frequency words reassure you that you do know some SAT-type words, but also it may well help you on the actual day of the test. These words have turned up on recent tests; some of them may well turn up on the test you take. The more you study actual SAT critical reading questions, the more you realize one thing: the key to doing well on the critical reading portions of SAT is a strong working vocabulary of college-level...
