The essay entitled “A Perfectly Imperfect Decision,” an argumentative essay, became the bases for learning to support my opinion with aspects from a novel. This became especially challenging in terms of trying to analytically defend and justify the decision of one of the main characters, despite the surface level analyses that the character was “wrong” for her decision. Developing a personal position that was rooted and supported by evidence from the text also helped to strengthen my ability to discern the appropriate voice needed in an argumentative essay. ...English 114 29 September 2014 Literacy Narrative I walked into my 10th grade English class on the first day of school and was greeted by my peppy, upbeat teacher, Mr. Mathew Kahn. I knew it was going to be a fun semester just from that first day of class. Mrs. Kahn gave us a lot of freedom to write what we wanted, when we wanted to. He had an amazing ability to communicate with students. It might have been because of his young age, so he knew how to satisfy teenagers like us. This teacher taught the material from his heart. He was making sure that everybody had understood the lesson before they leave. This helped me mold my papers into perfection with the help of Mrs. Kahn’s exceptional editing skills. He taught me how to write a paper that only I could come up with. He encouraged me to do this by using different writing techniques. A teacher that doesn’t take himself too seriously always will be a big hit with teenagers, although he’s not afraid to impose his authority if he has to. He would open every lesson in a disciplined manner by quickly silencing the class and getting on with the work while still having his bright positive attitude. Both books and audiobooks have the ability to do this; the difficulty arises when one must discern the extent. Jenni Laidman, writer for the Chicago Tribune, states “I (Laidman) remain on the fence between reading and listening,” in her 2012 article titled “Audiobooks: Are they really the same as reading?” She recalls a sense of astonishment at hearing the verbal manifestation of one of her favorite characters as read to her for the first time, describing a feeling of being “…in love with the voice” (“Audiobooks…”). Printing books was time-consuming, as the blackline method used required a new block to be carved for each page. Movable type in printing was invented during the Song Dynasty. Movable Chinese characters were carved from wood, which could be arranged as needed and even reused. Later versions used clay, but these broke easily.
