The leadership characteristics that helped Southwest Airlines move forward is the responsibility of the leader. Responsible leadership is defined as making business decisions that, upon the interests of the shareholders and also other stakeholders, for example employees, customers, suppliers, the context as well as the future generations (Definition of responsible leadership, n.d). From the text showed that the leader have the responsibility on his staff, he is caring his staff. The way to prove my point is three days after 9/11, James Parker announced that the company would be keeping all of its employees when the ramifications of the shutdown forced other airlines to cut staff. When he promised to keep all of its employees, the employees do not worry whether when their last day to work is, so the task which he delegated to employees can be doing well. And the employees created the loyalty to the company due to this action. Even when the company wanted to help reduce the company’s workforce and cuts cost, it also without laying off its employees but it was offering voluntary buyout packages to all employees who were willing to retire early.
Besides that, encouragement also is another leadership characteristic of the leader of Southwest Airline. The encouragement in leadership is defined as the action of motivating other people with the whole new courage, spirit, hope, support or confidence (Jeremiah, 2005). The power of encouragement in leadership is very unique and powerful. By implementing encouragement in leadership, an encouraged environment is created that will inspired the followers to do better. According to the case study, when other airlines are cutting staff after the terrorist attacks, Southwest Airlines is the only airlines that not only to promise to keep staff, as well as issuing a profit- sharing payment. Issuing a profit-sharing payment is for...

Many of leaders’ dispositions are influenced by the traits that they possessed at birth. They can acquire certain traits from the environment they live in. It is possible to change one’s traits for better or for worse through conditioning. 1. Self-confidence A leader needs to have the ability to take risks. This ability comes with confidence in his decisions and himself. ...Table of Contents 1. Introduction 2. What is leadership? 3. Who is a leader? 4. Key Theories of Leadership 5. The Charismatic Leaders and their leadership 6. Contingent Leaders, a model to follow? 7. Conclusion Introduction This report reviews and examines the theories behind leadership; identifying and analysing the concept of leadership and leaders from an analytical perspective. Some of the key points will focus on areas I have particular disputes with. Areas such as: • What is leadership? • Who is a leader? • Key Theories of Leadership • The Charismatic Leaders and their leadership • Contingent Leaders, a model to follow? These are the key points I will address in this report taking an analytical perspective into the idea of a leader being thought of as caring and developing followers. 2 WHAT IS LEADERSHIP? I believe the actual concept of leadership is intangible; this is due to the reliance on the members of the group the “Leader” has to try and influence to reach its target goal. Therefore Leadership is commonly defined as the process of influencing the activities of an organized group in its efforts towards goal setting and goal achievement (Buchanan and Huczynski. 1985, 2010). Leadership appears to be a critical ingredient in effectiveness; a process of social persuasion in which one can enlist the aid and......

Characteristics of a Good Leader

...Characteristics of a Good Leader Introduction Leaders have an important role within an organisation related to its success, productivity and the performance of the employees. The ‘fundamental task of a leader is to build and maintain a high performing team’ (Furnham, 2005, p.566). However, Yukl (2013, p.18) argues that there are numerous and diverse definitions concerning the concept of a leader as well as the term leadership, although a general consensus appears to suggest it involves a process of influencing and guiding relationships within an organisation . Guirdham (2002, p.15) emphasises the importance of leaders having good interpersonal and communication skills, which as Yukl suggest involves the ability to persuade others. Yukl (2013, p.18) further states there are additional factors that contribute to good leadership such as the situational context and the use of power. Another issue regarding the characteristics of leaders is that many theories and models have been based on Western perspectives (House and Aditya, 1997, p.409) and typically based on research with white males (Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, CIPD, 2008, p.7). There is some cultural crossover in servant leadership, which according to Northouse (2013, p.219), was originally proposed by Greenleaf in the 1970s, and also has origins in ancient Eastern and Western philosophies; for example, it is deeply embedded in Arab-Islamic culture (Sarayrah, 2004, p.59). A further concern is......

History of Leadership Study

...History of Leadership Research Researchers have examined leadership skills from a variety of perspectives. Early analyses of leadership, from the 1900s to the 1950s, differentiated between leader and follower characteristics. Finding that no single trait or combination of traits fully explained leaders' abilities, researchers then began to examine the influence of the situation on leaders' skills and behaviors. Subsequent leadership studies attempted to distinguish effective from non-effective leaders. These studies attempted to determine which leadership behaviors were exemplified by effective leaders. To understand what contributed to making leaders effective, researchers used the contingency model in examining the connection between personal traits, situational variables, and leader effectiveness. Leadership studies of the 1970s and 1980s once again focused on the individual characteristics of leaders which influence their effectiveness and the success of their organizations. The investigations led to the conclusion that leaders and leadership are crucial but complex components of organizations. Traits Model of Leadership: Leaders versus Followers Initial investigations of leadership considered leaders as individuals endowed with certain personality traits which constituted their abilities to lead. The studies investigated individual traits such as intelligence, birth order, socioeconomic status, and child-rearing practices (Bass, 1960; Bird, 1940; Stogdill, 1948, 1974)...

...Being global is not just about where you do business.Robert J. House, The Wharton School  GLOBE Principal Investigator  | GLOBE is the acronym for “Global Leadership and Organizational Behavior Effectiveness,” a 62-nation, 11-year study involving 170 researchers worldwide.  The GLOBE Project was introduced in my first article (click here).  In this third article, I will overview GLOBE’s findings about how business values and practices vary across nations and cultures.   Cultural Dimensions, the Measuring Rods of Cross-Cultural ResearchAs I explained in my first article, the first major question addressed by the GLOBE researchers was which measurement standards to use so that they could be precise about the similarities and differences among numerous societal and organizational cultures.  After a thoroughgoing literature review as well as two pilot studies, the team identified nine "cultural dimensions" that would serve as their units of measurement, or (in research language) "independent variables."Cultural dimensions have been around as long as the field of intercultural research (i.e., since the early 1960s).  They provide concepts and terminology that enable all of us to become aware of, to measure, and to talk knowledgeably about the values and practices found in a human culture – and about the similarities and differences among human cultures.   What exactly is a cultural dimension?  It’s a concept that is depicted graphically as a continuum.  In most cases, only......
