Checkers Pizza was one of the first to offer home delivery service, with overwhelming success. However, the major pizza chains soon followed suit, taking away Checker’s competitive edge. Jon Barnard, Checker’s founder and co owner, needed a new gimmick to beat the competition. He decided to develop a computerized information database that would make Checkers the most efficient competitor and provide insight into consumer buying behaviour at the same time. Under the system, telephone customers were asked their phone number; if they had ordered from Checkers before, their address and previous order information came up on the computer screen. After successfully testing the new system, Barnard put the computerized order network in place in all Checkers outlets. After three months of success, he decided to give an award to the family that ate the most Checkers pizza. Through the tracking system, the company identified the biggest customer, who had ordered a pizza every weekday for the past three months (63 pizzas). The company put together a program to surprise the family with an award, free food certificates, and a news story announcing the award. As Barnard began to plan for the event, however, he began to think that maybe the family might not want all the attention and publicity.

1. What are some of the ethical issues in giving customers an award for consumption behaviour without notifying them first?
2. Do you see this as a potential violation of privacy? Explain.
3. How would you handle the situation if you were

Report Advice

...Department of management science lancaster university ADVICE ON WRITING A REPORT FOR A CLIENT Mike Wright ext. 93846 email m.wright@lancaster.ac.uk based on a draft by Mike Pidd November 2010 Executive Summary This document provides general advice about writing client reports. Such reports are not literary documents but are intended to convey technical information in a form that is as easy to digest as possible. It makes several specific recommendations. 1. Start with a summary of the findings, then the argument and the supporting evidence. Do not start with assumptions and then attempt to write a quasi-scientific paper. 2. Use short sentences and a simple vocabulary; you are not trying to win a literary award. 3. Style is important. So are grammar, punctuation, syntax and spelling. You want your report to look professional. 4. Learn how to use a word processor properly, so that you have a consistent and appealing layout and structure in the report. 5. Place technical material in an appendix and make sure that the main text refers to it in a sensible way. 6. Use diagrams and figures when appropriate, since they can save many words. They must be readable, clear and properly labelled. 7. Always number the pages and sections to make it easy to refer to them in the report and in discussions. 8. Ask someone else to read the report...

Minimizing Interruptions

...Minimizing Interruptions Facts: Although some interruptions are signs of involvement and interest, and other s are genuine requests for information, interruptions are rarely appreciated. When you cut others off, the speaker thinks that you don’t care about their ideas or that you believe your ideas are better than theirs. When you interrupt, you may be perceived as rude, egocentric and controlling – someone who believes that what you have to say is more important than other’s ideas. Strategies on how to cut back interrupting: Count to three after the speaker seems to be finished. Concentrate on what the speaker is saying then paraphrase it back when he/she is finished. When you catch yourself interrupting, apologize and ask the speaker to continue. Ask another co-worker to count the number of times you interrupt in a day. Opportunistic Listening Look for Main and Supporting Points Sometimes it is appropriate to ask politely for the speaker’s thesis. E.g. “I’m trying to pull together what you’ve been telling me about the problems you’ve been, having meeting your quotas. Could you summarize for me?” At other times, however, it isn’t appropriate to ask the speaker outright. “Over all, then, would you say your division is losing its market share?” Take Notes You are unlikely to remember every deadline, every comment or even every topic in a meeting...

I've run this poem threw it, I'm sure your pleased too no, Its letter perfect in it's weigh, My checker tolled me sew. Just as so many of us rely on calculators to do all our math for us—even to the point that we do not trust calculations done by our own hand—far too many of us use spell checkers as proofreaders, and we ultimately use them to justify our own laziness. I once received a complaint from an outraged professor that a student had continually misspelled “miscellaneous” as “mescaline” (a hallucinogenic drug). The student’s spell checker did not pick up the error, but the professor certainly did, and he told me that he even speculated privately that the student who wrote the paper did so while on mescaline. So proceed with caution when using spell checkers. They are not gods, and they do not substitute for meticulous proofreading and clear thinking. There is an instructive moment in a M*A*S*H episode, when Father Mulcahy complains to Colonel Potter about a typo in a new set of Bibles—one of the commandments reads “thou shalt commit adultery.” Father sheepishly worries aloud that “These lads are taught to follow orders.” For want of a single word the intended meaning is lost...

Functional Cv

...What is a CV? Curriculum Vitae: an outline of a person's educational and professional history, usually prepared for job applications (L, lit.: the course of one's life). Another name for a CV is a résumé. A CV is the most flexible and convenient way to make applications. It conveys your personal details in the way that presents you in the best possible light. A CV is a marketing document in which you are marketing something: yourself! You need to "sell" your skills, abilities, qualifications and experience to employers. It can be used to make multiple applications to employers in a specific career area. For this reason, many large graduate recruiters will not accept CVs and instead use their own application form. An application form is designed to bring out the essential information and personal qualities that the employer requires and does not allow you to gloss over your weaker points as a CV does. In addition, the time needed to fill out these forms is seen as a reflection of your commitment to the career. There is no "one best way" to construct a CV; it is your document and can be structured as you wish within the basic framework below. It can be on paper or on-line or even on a T-shirt (a gimmicky approach that might work for "creative" jobs but not generally advised!). When should a CV be used? * When an employer asks for applications to be received in this format * When an employer simply states "apply to ..." without specifying the format * When making speculative...

Checker Shadow Illusions

...The final illusion is the Checker Shadow Illusion. This illusion shows two squares that are the exact same color. You mind thinks that the squares are two different colors, but your brain thinks that because of their background. It mainly has to do with how our brain interprets the drawing. The image is described as two specific checker squares, labeled A and B, are drawn on a grid. The checker square that is labeled “B” is being cast over by a shadow from a large cylinder. We are expecting the cylinder to cast the shadow onto the checkerboard. Because we are used to making sense of shadows in real life, we become aware of the shadow, and we think that we know how to interpret it. However, the person who made this illusion, Edward H. Adelson,...

Nixon Checkers Speech

...Richard Nixon Checkers Speech On September 23, 1952 Richard Milhous Nixon sat down to address the largest television audience ever amassed by a politician this was no ordinary political speech. Nixon’s future in politics was on the line. In one speech Nixon had the daunting task of not only clearing his name of the allegation that he had received illegal campaign funds, but he also had to present himself as a viable asset to the Republican ticket. Nixon bared his heart to the American people, and in turn was applauded for his honesty and good character. Nixon’s speech was met with nearly unanimous acceptance and praise. But, audience acceptance alone is not what makes a speech unforgettable or worth writing about. Good speech analysis involves evaluating the speaker, audience and environment surrounding a speech. Before Nixon’s speech can be analyzed there must be a clear understanding of the events leading up to his speech. After only six years in politics as the California state Governor, Richard Nixon was chosen by Dwight Eisenhower as his running-mate in the Presidential election. Being only 39-years old and having relatively no political experience it was an honor for Nixon to be chosen. The main issues being debated by the presidential and vice-presidential hopefuls were the Korean War, communism and corruption. Nixon focused most heavily on addressing the issue of communism because of his contributions in exposing...

Just Needed to Get in

...PRINCIPALS OF EFFECTIVE COMMUNCATION INTERPERSONAL SKILLS Adjust your speech for your audience: A specific audience will appreciate the use of jargons and acronyms. This means that it would be good to use the slangs and terms the specific audience uses. For example when talking to a group of teenagers using their type of lingo could make them more interested in what you are saying. Don’t use one tone the entire speech: It makes you sound very dry, dull, and boring. It makes you a much better speaker when you raise your voice a bit here and there. When you are talking and you get to an important part or you want the audience to remember a word or a phrase or you want to make emphasis on something. Lip Reading: When someone is speaking and you cannot understand what this individual is saying, you could try and read his lips. Lip reading is a very effective form of communication for deaf people or those that are hard of hearing. They try to make sense of what the speaker is saying by the movements of their mouths. When speaking to someone that is using lip reading it is important that nothing is obstructing their view of the speakers mouth, as they can miss key information. CUES IN VERBAL EXCHANGE Be mindful of nonverbal cues: these are ways of communication without talking these include; posture, body language, hand gestures, facial expression etc. if you notice that someone you are communication with folds their arms and is frowning their face this means that the person...

Model Checking Using Pat

...Automatic Model Checking of State Machines A seminar report submitted to MANIPAL UNIVERSITY For Partial Fulfillment of the Requirement for the Award of the Degree of Master of Technology in Software Engineering by Anusha A Reg. No. 130928001 February 2014 Abstract The idea of Model Driven Development (MDD) is to specify requirements of systems in a formal (usually graphical) notation. UML is the initial and dominant modelling phase in software engineering arena. If errors are occurring in this phase of software development itself, it will cost a lot. Hence it is crucial to detect model level errors in the initial phase rather than later stages of software development. An approach to automatically verifying models composed of UML state machines. This approach helps in checking safety/liveness, properties, trace refinement, relationships and so on with the help of PAT (Process Analysis Toolkit) and CSP (communicating sequential programs). 1 1 1.1 Introduction State Machines The concepts behind state machines are about organizing the way a device, computer program, or other (often technical) process works such that an entity or each of its sub-entities is always in exactly one of a number of possible states and where there are well-defined conditional transitions between these states. The UML state diagrams are directed graphs in which nodes denote states and connectors denote state transitions. In UML, states are represented as rounded rectangles labeled...

Commands (Windows)

...10 Useful Windows Commands You Should Know…. There are some things you can only do from the command line, even on Windows. Some of these tools don’t have graphical equivalents, while others are just plain faster to use than their graphical interfaces. We can’t possibly cover all the useful commands you can use in the Command Prompt or PowerShell here. We’ll be focusing on commands that should be useful even if you’re not a command-line person. ipconfig – Quickly Find Your IP Address You can find your IP address from the Control Panel, but this takes quite a few clicks. The ipconfig command is a fast way of determining your computer’s IP address and other information, such as the address of its default gateway — useful if you want to know the IP address of your router’s web interface. To use the command, just type ipconfig into a Command Prompt window. You’ll see a list of all the network connections your computer is using. Look under Wireless LAN adapter if you’re connected to Wi-Fi or Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection if you’re connected to a wired network. ipconfig /flushdns – Flush Your DNS Resolver Cache If you change your DNS server, the effects won’t necessarily take place immediately. Windows uses a cache that remembers DNS responses it’s received, saving time when you access the same addresses again in the future. To ensure Windows is getting addresses from the new DNS servers instead of using old, cached entries, run the ipconfig /flushdns command after...

Richard Nixon Checkers Rhetorical Analysis

...Former senator and president, Richard Nixon, in his speech, “Checkers,” regales his listeners with an explanation as to how the money for his campaign is being spent. Nixon’s purpose is to tell the truth about how he uses his money, and give an anecdote on his own life. He adopts a candid tone in order to persuade his audience that he is telling the truth. Nixon uses the rhetorical appeals ethos, intelligence, and snob to sway the public to his side of the story. Nixon opens his speech by explaining what he has been accused of, and who he is. He shows his credibility by first establishing himself as “a candidate for the vice presidency” (2), which initially allows the audience to build some confidence in what he is saying. He also notes the problem he is facing during his run, as his “honesty and integrity has been questioned” (2). Nixon states these things first in order to show where he stands, as well as what he will be discussing. With this assertive tone, the audience knows well in...

... The problem is that everyone tells you about the dangers of plagiarism but nobody tells you how to solve it. You may not even know what plagiarism is and need an essay checker to point it out to you. Basically, plagiarism is taking someone else’s work and attempting to pass it off as your own and this kind of plagiarism can occur in two ways, both of which can be identified by an essay checker. * Plagiarism can be done deliberately, in which case it is not only against the rules of the schools, colleges and universities but it's also a crime, which is punishable by law. * It can also be done accidentally because you have failed to cite sources correctly or because you have been careless when taking notes and transferring them to your essay. This is especially likely when you are new to academic life or when you are doing extensive research into a subject.
