Chesapeake Planters In The 17th Century

With the need of tobacco growing out of control in the mid-17th century, the powerful Chesapeake planters needed a new way to better supply that demand. They brought in European indentured workers and even attempted to use captured Native Americans, but would only result in disruption of their lucrative deerskin trade. Modeling after the sugar growers, the planters decided to use African slaves in their newly developed labor camp plantations. Due to the increasing number of African people coming to the colonies, there had to be some legal social division between them and the English. After wresting with the idea of slaves receiving their freedom if they converted to Christianity, it was decided that they could not and that the determining factor of slavery would be if a person looked European (white). Slaves had no legal rights nor did they receive any pay. Indentured servants and black …show more content…
Virginia began passing laws that would further the separation of temporary servants and slaves working for the rest of their lives. Before this time it was possible for Africans to earn their freedom and keep it, but Virginia was pushing to make that near impossible. The leaders previously wrestled with the idea that Africans could earn their freedom if they converted to Christianity. It was eventually decided that the determining factor of slave status would be if someone did not resemble Europeans, which they were referring to white skin. This would lead to the increasing harsh treatment and punishment of blacks. Discriminating laws were continued to be passed that worsened the lives of not only the slaves, but the free blacks as well. They could not accuse a white man of any wrong doing nor could they fight back if attacked by a white. If they did however, they would receive a harsh corporal punishment of 30 whips(Jones, p.

...Chesapeake and New England colonies Comparison During the early 16th century and into the early 17th century, European colonies rapidly colonized the newly found Americas. England in particular sent large groups to the east coast of North America to two separate regions, which would later become known as the Chesapeake and New England areas. The Chesapeake region included Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and the New Jerseys. The New England region of the colonies included Rhode Island, Plymouth, Massachusetts Bay Colony, New Haven, and Connecticut. Eventually in the late 1700’s these two regions would come together to form one nation. Both regions were very different and did not share many common ideas. They were different in their views and beliefs on religion, economy, and motives for colonial expansion. In 1609 a group of settlers, led by Captain John Smith, founded Jamestown which became the first colony to thrive and prosper in the New World. The main goal of these Chesapeake settlers was to make money by finding gold, silver, or anything else that they could take back to England and make a profit on. Another goal of theirs was to find a northwest passage to Asia. The New Englanders were mostly puritans who first settled in Plymouth and were driven to the New World in hopes of religious freedom. Some moved to escape bad marriages, some moved from poverty, and others moved from troubling royal policies. Whatever their reasons were, the colonists had one common goal--- to strive for a better life. Sharing this common bond, Americans banded together and fought for independence during the Revolution. As the Revolution ended, Americans felt overjoyed and united. They managed to overlook some of the differences between them that would eventually lead to an intense conflict in the years to come.
