Improving Our Education System
In his essay “What Our Education System Needs Is More F’s,” Author Carl Singleton argues that our education system needs more F’s in order to improve our education. He claims that giving more F’s where ever deserved would improve the student performance in the long run. Singleton states that “there would be no illiterate college graduates next spring.” His main argument is that our education system is a problem due to our standards being lowered to pass our students. Singleton states, “D’s have turned into C’s, C’s have turned into B’s, and a B’s became an average grade.” He blames the professors for not doing their job correctly. Singleton states that most teachers should have never gotten certified to teach because they are not strict enough. Another one of Singletons main argument is that the students need to know the material. He claims that giving more F’s to students who deserve them it would decrease the number of illiterate people in this system. Spending less time on TVs and electronics and more time on studying and home work would improve the education system. In his essay Singleton argues the strategies of providing examples of his arguments and also towards the end he offers a solution to improve our education system. One of his strongest strategies is that he uses examples that would support his arguments. His solution is to give more F’s. Singleton structures his essay by explaining how cause and effect would really be a solution in our education system. He states that giving more F’s would result in an improvement in our education system. To conclude, Singleton states that teachers or professors need to use their F’s more on students in order for our education students to recover from this mass ignorance by the administration.

...Film Review (Chicano Education Movement) The 60s are the true beginning for the Chicano movement however, I did not realize that it began with Chicano students protesting for better education. The film enlightens the harsh realities that most Chicano students faced. It turns out that most schools showed clear signs of prejudice and discrimination towards most Chicano students. Teachers made kids ashamed of their culture and showed little to no concern to the Chicano students. According to the film one of four Chicano students graduated from high school. Even after the case "Brown versus the Board" students were treated unfairly. The film suggest that it was the lack of concern for the education of Chicanos that began to challenge the traditional perception of Chicanos. Sal Castro who was a teacher at East High School helped organize students to protest. 4000 students walked out of East high, they brought attention to their cause however, some of it was not wanted. The film talks about how the Brown Berets who were a more radical group fighting for Chicanos got involved and supposedly represented security for the students. It was fascinating to see how the school board reacted after days of walk outs, they basically did nothing for a while. Walkouts continued and tensions increased, but many tried to keep things under control. If frustration got to the students then that would have led to a riot instead of a peaceful protest. At age eleven. she began working in the fields as a migrant worker and then on her family's land after the death of her father.
