33 Mine Workers Trapped with limited Communication Stephanie Contreras 9-1-2012 University of Phoenix; Axia College

On August 5th, 2010, the world turned upside down for 33 workers who got trapped underground. All 33 mine workers were from San Jose Mine which is a small copper in Chile that is owned by Minera San Eseban llPrimera. The workers were once thought to be dead being trapped 530 miles north of Santiago in Chile. They were released from underground 69 days later right in time to be with their families for the holiday.

Families and friends were able to know they were all okay when they wrote on a note they attached to the end of a probe. This gave their loved ones some relief that they were all okay. They were trapped in a shelter which made it hard for people to drill a hole to attempt to find them in order for them to communicate with each other. Drilling the first hole to find the workers gave them an estimate of how long it will take them to drill a hole big enough to rescue each one of them. The hole was a big help for the people above ground to communicate with the mine workers stuck underground. They were able to send down some toothbrushes, deliver food, water, medicine, entertainment , and some oxygen for all the workers.

The mine workers were stuck in a shelter that was about 500 sq ft. It was no bigger than a small apartment. Being very tight for 33 mine workers; they had to entertain themselves and communicate amongst each other to avoid anxiety attacks and driving themselves crazy. Communicating with each other was very important. They needed to keep each other positive as a team. It was estimated to be around 90deggress and dark underground. The goal for the people above ground was to keep the mine workers focused and positive. They had to stay on top of sending down the important necessities for the mine workers. Without this communication between he two parities; it would have been really hard to rescue all 33 mine workers. Some of the things that needed to be considered when addressing an audience with different members was confidence and security with the families of the mine workers. They need to feel that comfort of confidence to know everything will be fine and the problem will be solved as soon as possible. The families need to be addressed that their loved ones are okay and they are going to do everything they can to rescue them. Telling the truth about everything is also important for the families. They knew the mine workers were going to be stuck for at least a few weeks; giving out false information would only makes things worse with the families emotions. Being persuasive with advices being given is another thing that needed to be considered.

Some of the potential needs for the Chilean miners families that needs to be addressed is give them all the information that is given from the miners and the people who are helping rescue them. They need to be informed as much as possible; whether it is good or bad news. They also would need to receive the information of any updates with their mine workers first before it goes to the media. This gives them a sense of security and importance feeling. The families would need counselors and supporters to help them stay positive and keep them united so they don’t become depressed or sick. They need to stay calm to keep everything positive. Family members need to cope with the hardships that is occurring. Having the negative publicity with the company is not what they need. They just need information and updates with rescuing their loved ones.

Some of the potential needs of the company’s employees when receiving a message about the incident is to have them receive information. Same goes with the employees with the information being good or bad; they need to know either way. The employees would want more information of the issue that caused the cave to collapse and what went wrong in order to figure out ways to help their co-workers. They would also need some comfort and guidance as to what to do next. The employees understand what it feels like to be underground and with limited necessities they carry along with them. The employees would need more focus on how to comfort the mine workers families who are in pain and worried. The would need more of a leadership role. They know that it is up to them to help hey cannot give up on their people.

The action that must be taken before and after the message is delivered to ensure that it was received as intended is follow through. They must keep their promise which is very important the families of the mine-workers don’t lose faith and feel important with the whole dilemma. It is important to make sure that every person who is sending the messages to everyone has the same facts and info; we don’t want a family to receive the wrong information. We need to finalize there are enough workers to help save the mine workers as promised. We would also need to gather all of the mine worker families information to have ways to communicate with them. Its always better to make sure you are prepared ahead of time.

Violence is seen in movies, reality TV, throughout news networks, and more. It seems as if media is aiding in a worldwide violence craze.
