Chapter 1: The Rescue
Summary
The book is based on a true story. Dave's mom hit him because she said he needed to wash the dishes faster and he didn't. When he was done he ate breakfast. He didn't eat a lot because he wasn't allowed to. So after that he went to school and got checked out by the nurse. When she asked what happened he said he walked into a door. He said that because his mom told him to. What really happened was his mom banged his head against the counter in the kitchen. He even goes to the police station but did not tell on his mom because he knew he would've got another whooping from her.

I really feel bad for Dave he gets beat from his mother and he can't do anything about …show more content…
I mean he is eating from a garbage and he is in trouble. His mom almost killed him, that would've crossed the line. Immediately after that I would've told the police. But I would need to make a living. I wouldn't be able to eat. I agree on how he hates his dad. All his dad did was argue for him, he always lost. If that was my kid I would not let my wife treat him as a slave.

Chapter 5: The Accident
Summary
The woman is crazy! She stabs him in the chest with a knife. She threatened him because he needed to finish his chores. She didn't want to stab him but she slipped and the knife came flying at his stomach. He passed out twice. She helped him out a little but she didn't want to give him food. Dave went to his dad to help but his dad told him to keep on washing the dishes. He had a fever for a couple of days. His mom stopped acting generous and startet acting harsh again. He wrapped his stomach all by himself.
Reaction
What kind of mother is this. She stabs her own son and doesn't even care. He had to take care of himself. What 10 year old boy makes a bandage for a knife being in his stomach. You have to respect that. His dad didn't care either. That is a huge sign of bad care. That could've killed him. If I was him I would heal myself as best and as fast as possible then I would've ran away.

Kozol also mentions how Dr. King said, "as long as the Negros basic mobility is from a smaller ghetto to a larger one," (33), but right now minorities are moving from larger ghettos to smaller ones. Then there is a cut and we jump into Ezra’s discussions with the angel Uriel, and he his three visions.
