Punishment and discipline is the most effective on children today. Some people think that discipline and punishment is the same thing, but there not. Discipline is helping children develop self- control and sets limits and corrects misbehavior. Punishment is physical hitting, yelling, holding back rewards, and penalizing a child. “Not all children respond to discipline and punishment in the same manner” (Moore). Why do parent’s discipline there children. The most know reason is because parents want there children to act in a certain way that allows them to function on a day to day basis (Frazier). Discipline should teach a child to think about there behavior and why it was inappropriate. Discipline is effective because the child learns to take responsibility for his or her behavior .Discipline is one of the biggest problems that every parent faces. It also can help a child get alone with the family and friend. Punishment is usually used on a child because it is quick and easy punishment shows adult power and it vents adult frustration. There are many methods parents can use to discipline and punish there child, such as spanking, time out and taking privileges away. These methods will help a child build mutual respect, accountability, responsibility, self-discipline and problem solving. Studies show that the majority of parents who spank their children wish they didn’t (Moore). One of the least effective ways of punishing a child is spanking, “there is no research that shows spanking to be an effective form of discipline” (Moore). Spanking Lewis 2 can apply to threats and acts, often violent, that are intended to cause pain or in still fear for the punishment. “As a child I was spank it showed me a lesson but it didn’t really teach me any thing” (Farr). Some parents do not know any other forms of punishment to use on there child because the parent may be so frustrated with the child that spanking seems to be the only solution. By the parent being so frustrated with the child it can turn into physical abuse and the parent may not be aware of that. Even though spanking is against the law because it can be harmful to the child and leave marks on the child’s body parents tend to still do it. “Spanking a child also teaches the child not repeat what he or she has done” (Ford). Since spanking a child is not that effective the child needs to know that his or her parent loves them unconditionally and they would not replace them for the world.
The most effective discipline and punishment for a toddler is time out because it is very hard for them to sit still and stay focused for a long period of time. Time out should begin when the child is 24 months because this will show the child that they should not miss behave at an early age. “A child should have to go to there room and sit in there with no television, no toys and think about what they have done when going to time out and then the parent and the child should discuss why they where on punishment” (ford). After a child leaves time out they should be distracted with a new activity so that they will not go back to misbehaving. The discipline part is the child think about what he or she has done and the punishing part is sitting in time out not do anything.
As a child get older it becomes harder for the parent to punish them, but it may be easier to discipline them because the child is begin taught something. The child may be Lewis 3 influenced by there peers. Which they may go against there parents rules, but the child should know what is expected out of him or her by now. That’s when most parents use other ways of punishing there child rather then spanking them and putting them in time out. The parent may begin to take away privileges which may seem to be the best method. When a parent takes away privilege this shows the child that the parent means business and they should not do it again. “I think that taking things away from me as a child was a very good punishment because it taught me not to misbehave again” (Farr). The amount of time a child is on punishment can be a factor also because the longer a child is on punishment the more time they have to think about what they have done.
To sum up discipline and punishment should start early (Moore). Discipline is about changing a child behavior. It allows children to develop self discipline and helps them to become emotionally and socially mature adults. Although punishment does not always work it can truly affect a child by making the child think that he or she is not loved. The child may become aggressive which make the child want to hit other people. There are many ways that a parent may decide to discipline and punish there child, but the most effective ways are spankings, time out, and taking privileges away. This method makes a child understand more and make them realize what they have done. “I think of discipline as being the three R’s” (Frazier). Related, the consequences should be related to the behavior. Respectful, the behavior is required by both parent and child. The parent should not blame, humiliation, or pain as a means of enforcing discipline. Reasonable, make the discipline a reasonable one. Correct the mistake, make reparation, or ones behavior under control.
