Arts/Entertainment

The developments and introduction of Chinese Art dates back as far as 960 AD. Early forms of art in China were made from pottery and jade in the Neolithic period. The gist of Chinese art encompasses fine arts, folk arts, and performance arts. The most common types/forms of arts and entertainment in the Chinese culture and China are as follows:

1. Literature
2. Chinese Folk Art
3. Visual Art
4. Film
5. Chinese Music
6. Performing Arts
7. Gardening
8. Architecture

The start era for Chinese literature was the Spring and Autumn period. Chinese culture contains various groups of literature, including: Early Chinese poetry, Han and Northern dynasties poetry, Golden Age of Chinese poetry, Li Bai and Du Fu, Late Tang and Five dynasties, Song, Ming and Qing literature, Western influence: the big three, and Modern. These are all forms of early and late poetry in the Chinese culture. The love poems are among the most appealing in the freshness and purity of the Chinese language. There are several famously recognized poets in the Chinese culture. In modern poetry, Xu Zhimo, a romantic poet who cherished the poetry of the English romantics like Keats and Shelley, was among the first Chinese authors that effectively naturalized western romantic forms into contemporary Chinese poetry. Early Chinese poetry, in the Golden age, contained notable poets like Bai Juyi, Luo Binwang, Jia Dao, Wang Wei, and etc.

Another form of entertainment in China that is probably the most common is Chinese music. The origins of Chinese music (and poetry) can be found in the Book of Songs. The text contains the oldest existing compilation of folk songs, hymns, and dignified songs. Early Chinese music was based upon percussion instruments, such as the bonze bell. The bronze bell was created in the 6th to 5th century B.C.E., and is in fact today one of the featured relics in the British Museum's "A History of the World in 100 Objects." Over the years, Chinese music has transformed and altered, beginning with the early dynasty periods in the 1800’s (folk music), to the introduction of punk rock and chinese hip hop in the 2000’s. Today, the two most widely known singers in China according to the 2014 Top Chinese Music Awards are Wakin Chau, winning the award for Best Male Singer, and Zhou Bichang, winning the award for Best Female Singer.

An individual visiting the country of China would find examples of art at a variety of places, such as: The Art Museum of China (also called the China Art Pallace), China Central Academy of Fine Arts, Today Art Museum, and Beijing World Art Museum. These are four of the most prestigious art museums in China’s history. With 166,000 square metres (1,790,000 sq ft) of floor space, the Art Museum of China is the largest art museum on the continent of Asia. Mentioned above are all museums where people may find still art; for performing arts, a tourist may go to the National Center for the Performing Arts (NCPA). At the NCPA you might desire to see entertainers such as He Yunchang, a leading performance artist presently living and working in China. He graduated from Central Yunnan Art Institute, China, in oil painting in 1991, but over time made a name for himself with a sequence of outstanding performances that have tested his strength and endurance. More famous Chinese entertainers include Yuan Chai and Jian Jun Xi, two Chinese-born artists, who work collectively under the name “Mad For Real”. They have enacted events at the Venice Biennale and the Turner Prize. “Two Naked Men Jump into Tracey’s Bed,” was in fact said to be their best performance.

Another form of entertainment introduced in 1896, was Chinese film/Cinema. The first Chinese film, The Battle of Dingjunshan, was created in 1905, with the film business being centered on Shanghai in the early decades. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000) and Hero (2002), are two of the most popular films ever created in China. China is in fact the home of the largest film accommodation in the world, the Hengdian World Studios, and in 2010 it had the third biggest silver screen industry by number of feature films produced yearly. In 2012, the country snagged the title of being the second-largest market in the world by box office receipts.

Magazines, journals, and internet sites are also three very common forms of entertainment in China, as well as other countries all over the world. The Duzhe is China’s most renowned magazine. It is a semi-monthly Chinese broad-spectrum interest magazine. The magazine holds information on various subjects such as stories, celebrity’s biography, jokes, anecdotes, quotations. The Duzhe, pictured below, is frequently recognized as the Chinese version of The New Yorker.

Tourist Attractions

With a population of over 1.35 billion, China is the most populated country in the world. So, it is not difficult to imagine how many tourists desire to see the intriguing and fascinating country. There is an abundance of gorgeous attractions located in the great country of China. Starting with the world wide known landmark, the Great Wall of China. The wall was originally built to defend the northern borders of the Chinese Empire from the attacks of the nomadic tribes from the North. The condition of the Great Wall of China ranges from superb to completely ruined. The most popular area of the Great Wall is at Bādálǐng. The Great Wall is believed to be the most visited sight in the world.
Another fantastic attraction in China is the Potala Place, positioned 130 meters above the Lhasa valley. The Potala Place is described as the greatest monumental structure in all of Tibet. The Potala Palace used to be the dwelling of the Dalai Lama, until after the 1959 Chinese attack, the Dalai Lama fled to India.
The Forbidden City, situated in the very heart of Beijing, was home to 24 emperors of the Ming and Qing Dynasties. The Forbidden City is “the best-preserved imperial palace in China, the largest ancient palatial structure in the world, and the essence and culmination of traditional Chinese architectural accomplishment.” (Hinsbergh, 2015) The Great Wall of China, Potala Palace, and the Forbidden City are three of the most impressive monuments in the entire world. Other frequently visited grand monuments in China include the Pudong Skyline, Mount Huang, Li River Cruise, and Victoria Harbor.

Sports/Education
Even though China has extensively been associated with the martial arts, sports in China today consist of a variety of competitive games played in China, counting mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau. China holds its own nationwide quadrennial multi-sport event comparable to the Olympic Games called the National Games. The National Games, just like the Olympics, are held once every four years, most recently in October 2013. The 2008 Summer Olympics actually took place in Beijing, China and were held at the Beijing National Stadium.
Popular to contrary belief, Soccer is the most popular team sport in China, but badminton, basketball, and table tennis are all main sports as well. China Myths, China Facts

...Case Study: China Myths, China Facts Julliana Schlemper Embry-Riddle Aeronautic University Organizational Behavior & Change MGMT520 Fernando Muniz April 27, 2016 Case Study: China Myths, China Facts Introduction Considered the second-largest economy in the world, that should surpass the US in the next decade, China has a very unique culture. When I think about China, in a business way, I think about very serious people that know what they want and go get it. Chinese people like to know you more than what other people from other nationalities would. This way, Chinese can learn more about the person and know if they can trust you or not. Most of what Chinese do in business has to do with trust and how it’s built. The biggest difference between the West people and the Chinese people is we work on building a trust relationship (Harvard Business Review, 2015). In this case study, I will comment about three myths that surround China’s culture, work ethic and management techniques. The three myths are collectivism, long-term deliberations and risk aversion. Discussion Questions 1. Has this presentation challenged any assumptions you had about China and the Chinese people? Yes. Movies, News, the media in general, have pictured China as a culture that is more inclined to the individualism more than collectivism. It was new to me to know that workers in China are more inclined to self-interest than their communities and the companies they work for. 2. Using your...

Legal Advice Letter

...Smith, Thank you for your phone call last week requesting a legal advice. In this letter, I will provide you with my legal opinion concerning the facts you gave to me so you can make a qualified decision regarding the charges you face. First I will restate the facts, as I know them, to confirm their accuracy. Next, I will give you my opinion on whether a conviction for insider dealing is a potentiality. In your phone call you said, that you have received a call from City of London Police who wanted you to come in for an interview under caution due to evidence stating that you have been insider dealing. Regarding the facts of the case you explain, that you work for Stevens Management buying and selling orders and your wife works in the financial department in Transeit, a company which has been taken over by Microsoft. Before the offer from Microsoft became public the shares in Transeit shot up in value. According to the claim from the police exactly three days before the offer became public you excluded a sale of 500 Transeit shares. What makes your situation problematic is the fact that you had access to confidential information about the offer before it was made public due to your wife’s work. Whether you excluded the shares in your own name or in the name of the company your work for may also be relevant to the case. Due to the facts you have presented me it seem that the police have a strong case against you. The success of your case relies on persuading the police that you...

Freshmen Convocation

...Austin Alejos Ms. Garr Freshmen Convocation August 30, 2015 Freshmen Convocation Freshmen convocation was a meeting at the J. Schiedger Center for all freshmen to welcome them and talk about the university. I learned many cool new things and interesting facts. One of them was that this incoming freshmen class is the top academic class ever which is pretty cool to think since Lindenwood is the second oldest school west of the Mississippi. Another fact that I learned was that there are 815 incoming freshmen in this class and out of those there are 173 international students which is a ton. Out of those 815 freshmen, we come from 35 states and 37 countries. 518 out the 815 students have a 3.0 GPA or higher, which is 14% higher from last years’ freshmen class. Another interesting fact was that the average ACT score of the incoming freshmen is a 23.24. The President and all of the other people just talked about these facts and how proud they are of them and then the “voices only” group came on the stage and sang a couple songs for us. I learned quite a bit about the university that I did not know and was very surprised and honored to be apart of a class as high academic achieving as ours is. They also talked about all of the activities and sports they have here (which I am already on the baseball team), you can get involved in at Lindenwood and they all sounded like a lot of fun and great opportunities. I took away from that experience that this is a great and very...

Green Eggs And Jam Analysis

...Conformity and Control, The Story of Green Eggs and Jam By: TheSarcasmLord After watching Green Eggs and Jam, many people laugh at the silly video and take it for nothing more than meaningless entertainment, but in fact it has some deep meaning. Green Eggs and Jam by Jason Gastrow is a parody and perspective shift of the classic book Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Seuss, and can be viewed here on youtube. In Green Eggs and Jam, Gastrow takes the original concept of Green Eggs and Ham and follows the idea that in actuality Sam is fairly pushy for trying to force his opinion onto others. This aspect is not touched on in the original book, and it brings up the important point that if someone’s opinion is contrary to another person’s it should be...

Micro Enhancement Case Summary

...App. 2002) Facts of the Case: Micro Enhancement International (MEI) was a software development company that was on the about to have an IPO. They hired Coopers and Lybrand as the auditor. The IPO for MEI was delayed because Coopers and Lybrand were resisting some of MEI’s recognized revenue and were threating to add a “going concern” to the audit. In the end Coopers and Lybrand allowed MEI to recognize the revenue and took away the “going concern” qualification. By the time the issue was settled MEI had lost the underwriter for the IPO and then went bankrupt shortly after. MEI sued Coopers and Lybrand for multiple things, but then wanted to add a breach of fiduciary duty. MEI’s CEO Staples said that, “he trusted Coopers and that Coopers had agreed to do the audit to do the Audit and to serve as MEI’s business advisor…” The judge denied this request and MEI appealed. Procedural History: The judge denied MEI’s request to add the breach of fiduciary duty so MEI appealed. Legal Issue: The issue in this case is the establishment of Cooper and Lybrand’s fiduciary duty to MEI. If this duty is established then MEI will get to add that breach, however, if not, the judge’s original ruling will be affirmed. Reasoning/Analysis: The first thing is to understand what causes a fiduciary duty. There are two types, Matter of Law (between a attorney and client, physicians and patients, partners and partnerships, and close friends/relatives) or a Matter of Fact, which means that...

Instead she gave into the peer pressure that was administered by her new friends. There are additional factors that contribute to Sarah’s attitude and reasons why she did what she did. Augustine as Mentor

...Preparing Spiritual Leaders Liberty University CHHI520- Church History Robert Olsen Edward L. Smither's book entitled Augustine as Mentor: A Model for Preparing Spiritual Leader's was a very eye-opening and very interesting read. The book itself is not just about Augustine himself as a mentor, but it's really somewhat of a user guide on some of the finer points that any leader/mentor (especially in Ministry) can use on their journey in Ministry; it's written almost like a "how to" manual. As far as how the book is written, there's ground work on mentoring in general that's laid and it mixes in some "insights" on Augustine that will be further mentioned as the book progresses. As a matter of fact, it's not until the third chapter where the story really begins on the background and history of Augustine's life and ministry. Through the first chapter, Mr. Smither really goes over the eight main characteristics of mentoring that many spiritual leaders in years past have used (Smither, 13). Those eight are the group, the mentor as disciple, selection, the mentor-disciple relationship, sound teaching, modeling and involving in ministry, releasing to ministry and resourcing leaders. From there they look at several different people who used a very similar style from those who are more "known" (such as Paul and Jesus), to those who aren't like Bishop Basil and the clergy that had he mentored. A better known way that this whole process...

Identify the advantages, types of sources, etc., and provide answers for possible disadvantages. Hard copy sources versus Web-based sources. I personally believe that Hard copy sources are more reliable than Web-based sources for the simple fact that hard copy source information is not easily tampered with. Not many people can just up and change information when ever they want to. With Web-based information you have to be more careful because everything you find on the Internet is not necessarily true or reliable information. I argue for Hard copy source only because the information is more authentic, but I would probably use Web-based information myself just because is way more convenient than hard copy information. I argue for Web-based sources for this topic because I feel that this debate in particular is about something that is solely opinionated. I think hard copy books and newspapers etc. are for debates that are about cold hard facts. The Internet is where you will find other opinions on the situation at hand and I believe that is something that will help you in you debate about this topic. The advantage of Web-based sources in this situation is that you have more information but with Hard copy sources the information available to you is limited. A disadvantage with Web-based sources again is the authenticity of certain...

Truth in Wildgoose Lodge

...accurate writing of the incident, the former still paints an adequate picture of what happened one night in eastern Ireland, and it is still regarded by many as the best source for what happened. But why? Why would factual truth be less favorable than an embellished one? David Shield’s Reality Hungers offers a glimpse at that answer by providing a different take on what is “real”. Through Shield’s work we can discover why an exaggerated account can be considered more realistic than a historically factual one. Defining reality is at the core of arguing for the legitimacy of Carelton’s story as a description of what happened at Wildgoose Lodge. In my opinion, reality, defined, means plausible human actions and sentiments that are based on fact, which elicits an appropriate emotion from viewers. This view on reality is reflected in the artistically focused Reality Hunger, where author David Shields explores what can be considered real in contemporary literature. This take on reality can be better explained through a brief example conducted by surveying present surroundings. I’m at a desk in a room with three other students, each of whom is acting typically and obeying the physical laws that are inherent with being human; I’m bored. Though lackluster, this scenario is my reality. There isn’t a dinosaur next to me. None of the students (whom I’m all assuming are sane) are giggling maniacally at some tragedy. Everything that happened was plausible and...
