Assignment Topic:
China’s Deadly Water Problem
And
Corporate Social Responsibility Deficiencies
(Issues arising from the dead pigs found floating in a Shanghai river)

【Abstract】
There is an old saying in Chinese culture that the appearance of a fat pig at the front door augurs abundance and good fortune. However, the sight of more than 16,000 pig carcasses floating on the Huangpu River portends something else entirely. As Huangpu River is a major source of drinking water for 23 million Shanghai residents, the incident caused mass panic, especially in Shanghai.
The following report will firstly illustrate the specific background of the incident, followed by the analysis of the two major issues raised from the incident, which are China’s deadly water problem and corporate responsibility deficiencies. Finally, conclusions will be drawn, and recommendations will be provided to organisations in terms of the management of social responsibility.

【Background of the Issue】
The development of the incident follows the following timeline: * On 7th March 2013, a user on Weibo (known as Chinese Twitter) posted few photos showing that there were lots of dead pigs floating on the river near his home. Suddenly, the post was forwarded by over eight hundred users that caught the public and even the government’s attention. Shanghai Ministry of Environmental Protection promptly started to salvage pig carcasses, however, the number of dead pigs were far more than what had been expected. * By 11th March, the number of pig carcasses found increased rapidly, which from initial few dozens to thousands.
The ministry first time responded to the incident, and released the report suggested that the dead pigs may have been dumped from pig farms from Jiaxing, where is the upstream of Shanghai. * On 13th March, the officials announced the number of pig carcasses...

...THE YEAR THAT WAS(2011-12) In a year marked by mass protests, the awakening that swept the Arab world stood out. The Arab spring was sparked by rallies in Tunisia that followed the self-immolation in late 2010 of a young market worker angered by police harassment. He died in hospital in January, prompting thousands to take to the streets in sometimes violent clashes that forced the long-time president, Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali, to flee to Saudi Arabia. Emboldened by the outcome in Tunisia, protesters soon rose up in other Arab countries. Hundreds of thousands of Egyptians filled the centre of Cairo and camped in Tahrir Square to call for Hosni Mubarak to step down. After three decades in power, Mr Mubarak withstood only three weeks of strife. Although frail, he eventually stood trial (due to resume soon) for the deaths that occurred when his security forces tried to quash the protests. Elsewhere, Yemen’s president fled in June and eventually signed a transition deal to end his 33-year reign; Saudi troops helped to put down unrest in Bahrain; and reform was embraced in Morocco and Jordan. But the Arab spring was met with stiff resistance in Syria, where protests were brutally put down by Bashar Assad’s regime, resulting in over 7,000 deaths so far. In Libya Muammar Qaddafi caused a civil war after he tried to crush an opposition movement that spread from Benghazi. NATO aircraft enforced a no-fly zone, endorsed by the Arab League, in support of the rebels. After a summer of......

...law and the euthanasia debate 医学、法律与安乐死争议 Medicine and law are the main social institutions at the heart of the euthanasia debate. Where euthanasia is legalised, doctors have the problematic gate-keeping role as the arbiters of terminal illness, deciding how terminal it is, administering pain relief and treatment and ultimately, depending on the legislation adopted, prescribing or delivering terminal medication. Medicine shares this gate-keeping role with the law, which serves a regulating and restraining function, providing safeguards for both doctors and individuals. The many safeguards required in most versions of euthanasia legislation, covering issues such as the meaning of terminal illness and suffering, the patient's decision-making capacity, the interpretation of intention and coercion, the availability of alternative relief, the responsibilities of medical professionals and provision for scrutiny of doctors' decisions, underline the complexity of the issue. A strong view put forward by antieuthanasia advocates is that the very soul of medicine is placed on trial by euthanasia and that doing harm to medicine would also harm society. This argument is based on the position of trust doctors have in society. Allowing doctors to intentionally inflict death is regarded as fundamentally undermining that trust. A distinguishing characteristic of euthanasia as a public policy problem is its moral dimension. It goes to the fundamental principles on......
