Executive Summary

The purpose of this report is to recommend an appropriate computer system for home use. It first identify three main uses of the new computer system, which are studying, communication and entertainment, then relevant technical requirements with three price level are researched to satisfy these uses. It is found that most of the low price level components are out-of-date and with less compatibility due to the fast development of computer industry; on the other hand, the most expensive level is designed for business and group use. In that context, middle price for the essential components are preferred and some of the elements with low price are also acceptable as their performance can do little to the quality of the whole computer system.

1.0 Introduction

This report first expresses three main uses of the new computer system, and, followed by the relevant technical requirements, including hardware and software. Then, after researching a large number of valid sources, three levels of price are listed for each component. Considering the main uses, a recommendation is made in the last part which is the most appropriate for a home use computer.
2.0 Main Uses of the Computer System 2.1 Studying A crucial use of the computer system is study assistant. The use of internet has been highly adopted by the universities nowadays. Learning resources, such as the lecture notes, electronic additional readings, as well as assignment allocation and submission, are accessible through the course web site. In addition, almost all of the course assignments will be completed by using the Microsoft Office. Therefore, the new computer system will be well designed for study purpose. 2.2 Communication Communication is a critical subject for the development of computer system. The emergence of online communities through social networking sites, such as Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter has pervasive influence on campus life (Bachman, 2009). Sending and receiving messages, sharing photos and files, chatting with friends from long distance online, become such a ubiquitous aspect of the daily life. In this context, the new computer system will be used to build my virtual communities online. 2.3 Entertainment Computer entertainment is another key part in our daily life. Movie theaters no longer have dominant advantages of the sound effect and big screen as which can also be achieved by computer. On-line game developers have been designing numerous games which are quite creative and attractive. In addition, home-used computer can also serve as a shopping guidance since there are plenty of shopping websites which present much cheaper clothes than that of at shopping mall. In this way, entertainment plays an essential role in computer using.

3.0 Technical Requirements—Hardware 3.1 Input Devices Keyboard, compare with the Mouse, are main input devices that control the operation of a computer system. Other devices including the Scanner, Microphone, WebCam, and etc, all of them are requirements for the main uses of the computer. 3.2 Processing Unit Motherboard is the “central circuit board”, on which the CPU is built. Besides, a video card, and a sound card, integrated in the motherboard or exist separately, can generate and then output images and sound. 3.3 Storage Devices Storage in a computer includes primary storage and secondary storage, the first one is “directly accessible to the CPU” (Patterson, 2009); and the secondary storage includes the Hard Disk and USB Flash Drive. 3.4 Output Devices A monitor is the main output device that displays texts and images; the LCD is widely used nowadays. Another important output device is the Printer, either inject or laser one, it can produce hard copies of the lecture notes, reading materials and photos. A high quality loudspeaker is also needed for the entertainment purpose.
In addition, in order to get on the internet, a Modem is the most used device. And Power Supply provides the power requirement for the operation of the computer system.
4.0 Technical Requirements—Software
Operating system, internet explorer, security, etc are basic software in a computer. As for study, “teaching at distance, off-site supervision” (Kuo, 2003) become an advanced way for educators, for example, Microsoft office is essential to study as the completion of assignments have to be based on it; teachers and lectures would prefer to use power point to present the knowledge to student since it is more clear and time-saving. For communication, Hotmail, Windows Live Messenger and Skype, which are very prevailing between people since they are serving as a convenient platform. Additionally, entertainment software is attractive particularly for the youth. A windows media player is powerful enough to watch movies and TV series, enjoy CDs and DVDs, let alone the multimedia storage server, which can get music from up-to-date internet radio around the world, and watch the latest on-line TV shows, etc.

6.0 Finding
All the costs of the component listed above include three levels. As the development of information technology goes fast, the cheapest level for most of the essential hardware, such as the Motherboard, CPU, etc, are out-of-date, and their compatibility may be low; on the other hand, the most expensive one always provide multi-functions which are beyond the usages of a student, and the price is really high, in that context, the middle level ones seem to be more reasonable. For the rest of the hardware, the low price level might be acceptable as they have little influence on the performance of the whole computer system, as far as they can meet the requirements of the main uses. Regarding to the software, the most important one is the operating system, among which the Microsoft - Windows 7 is widely used, and some of the popular software, i.e. Internet Explorer, are also bound in it. For Security and Microsoft Office, the middle level is preferred as the low price ones have limitation to some extend while the expensive level is always designed for business purpose.

What It Takes to Start a Business

...article, “Anatomy of an Entrepreneur,” an entrepreneur is “one who organizes, manages and assumes the risks of a business or enterprise” (36-44). That is exactly what starting a business is, a risk. To avoid this risk, the first thing to think of when starting a business is whether it is in the best interest to run this business. Barbara Weltman said in her book, The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Starting a Home-Based Business, when choosing a business there is nothing better than to “turn a passion into a product or service.” From there she claimed one should play to their strengths and weaknesses to decide what kind of business to run (17-21). When a business is chosen it is best to know all the ins and outs of that business. According to Mark Warda, knowing the business at hand “might be the most valuable preparation you do.” (3) So the easiest way to learn a business is to become an employee in the same field that is being explored. Once a field is chosen and the soon to be business owner becomes a subject matter expert in the applied field, it is time to take the appropriate steps to start this business. In the journal publishing, “What to Do When Starting a New Business Checklist,” the list goes...

Fairness and Honesty

...that will have negative impact on the company is going to be tough for the person. An individual can make either a right or wrong decision, depending on how it will affect their life and workplace. In turn, the business will react accordingly to its moral guidelines and principles provided that the executives do not lose sight of the essential value of fairness. Everyone will have their own concept of right and wrong, so coming up with one definition of business ethics can be difficult. Moral standards are created by home environment, religious beliefs and traditions therefore making ethics hard to define, but not impossible to create (Agbata). At minimum, employees are expected to follow all applicable laws and regulations. Beyond the scope of obeying the law, they are expected not to harm customers, employees, clients, or competitors knowingly through deception, misrepresentation, coercion, or discrimination. Honesty and fairness can relate to how the employees use the resources...

...Bis solution for the exercises. Exercise 5. There is no correct answer to this question because it is asking the student to express his opinion on what will happen in the future. Therefore, the quality of his answer depends on the justifications provided. Good answers should address the following: * Database technology does permit abandonment of double entry, but there will likely be great resistance to such a radical change. Thus, students choosing this option need to present reasons why they think such a radical change would succeed. * The use of a schema for accountants seems quite plausible. It does eliminate the redundancy of double entry from the database system, yet it still provides a framework familiar and useful to accountants and financial analysts. * There is a good possibility that double entry will remain, even in databases, due to inertia. Indeed, many modern AIS, such as ERP systems, use databases but also retain the principles of double entry. Each Internet business model is based upon certain skills and incorporates a certain set of responsibilities. Each of the models offers a wide variety of benefit. We need to comprehend the kind of Web site functionality necessary for the different sites and particularly which factors can provide this certain competence so that we can get the assessment of our related expenditures. There are three most common Internet business models - product sales, service sales, and information delivery. For this particular business of an automotive repair shop, I would like to make a mixed approach of 2 of the 3 business models. Apart from repairing automobiles and tires, which can be specified as service sales, the shop can also include the product sales by which they can sell the tires as well at a small scale. The proper model on which the website can be based could be a virtual storefront. There will be information on the storefront about the inventory about which tires are currently available at the store of the shop and what is the specification and price for each of them. Customers can have a look at the company's inventory and buy their specific item and have it shipped to them. Are Video Games Educational

...That means understanding what makes a game both fun and educational. What makes a game fun? * Challenge and strategy – this is the core of the game. It includes the objective, the play and the scoring. The game should provide a challenge for its players and allow them to use different strategies to gain a level or win. This is what determines the age group or skill level. * Element of surprise – this is the variation of the game. The element of surprise must be built into the game to provide laughter, excitement, regret or risk. * Replay ability – this is the ability to play the game over and over with different outcomes each time. This is measured by the ‘boring’ factor. If the child gets bored fast, the game lacks replay ability. What makes a game educational? * New information – this is the educational information provided. It may be text or graphics, and is normally unknown by the age group or skill level for which the game is made. * Memorization – this is the part of the game that rewards good memory. If players are able to remember the new information, they can advance in the game. * Context and Cognition – this is the part of the game that puts the new information to use. Players win or score points by matching pairs, answering questions or problem solving. * Gender and Ethnic Balance – the game addresses equity issues through cooperative group play, language diversity, and...

...companies use it for marketing, some use it for sales, and some use it just to share information. It doesn’t matter why they use it, because they need it either way. Most customers want to check out products online before they decide what they want. Computers provide an easy and flexible way to research for the best products that are available for the customer. Depending on what you are going to use your web server for, you have to select an appropriate solution for yourself that will satisfy your needs. There is no “clear cut” way to create and configure a web server. If you are looking for the answer: “Ok! This is the best web server!” You are out of luck. I wish there was an easy way to figure this stuff out, but there are many questions to answer and needs to satisfy before you can declare that you have a great web server. There is a lot of information out there that will “help” you chose a solution for your company or organization. Unfortunately, I think in this case there is a little too much information available and it could be overwhelming. There is a lot of biased information available on the net. Some people say Apache is better than IIS, but it really depends on what your needs are. If you have your own company, you have to sit down with your IT staff and marketing staff and preferably every member of your company to come up with a “picture” that you need your website and web server to do for you and for your company. Sympathy is what I decided to show as much as feasible to others even in the deficiency of reverence. Honor is a preference for me not a compulsion. I have experienced the rewards of honor all the way through my life. Honor provided me power when I can find none to help me make complicated choice.
